Autopsy Round 5, 2024 - Suns destroy hopeless Hawks

Rowell/Anderson are both high picks/talent who are entering their 5th season in AFL.
There's been some injury but I think its a good argument that now we are seeing the consistent very good to high level performance week in week out from them. This started last season IMO.
In their 5th season.
In that time they have also developed synergy with Witts and the other mids/team.

Ward/Mackenzie have just started season 3 and 2 and some are wanting to 'pull the trigger' on them . Its ridiculous and totally unrealistic .
And on the back of them playing 2 pretty good games on end.

Was the performance terrible ? Yes
Do we need to improve in a lot of areas? Yes
Do we need patience ? Yes
Are people overeacting ? Yes

Midfield needs to step up.
Defenders and forwards are ok if they have better support and supply.
We have the coaching mix all wrong. We have essentially lost a line coach (stoppages) for another development coach.

Why are our forwards always behind the defenders as well

Our line coaches are clearly not working

Hale has stuffed the midfield
Kade Simpson not doing great for the forward line.

On SM-S916B using BigFooty.com mobile app
Simpson is the backs coach

Honestly?

I just listened - and were most certainly NOT 'well on top early'

We didn't 'go hard with free-flowing football in the 2nd quarter'

Either Sam is in complete denial or he's excusing the players.

I expected more honesty - and that was 70% of the team were absolutely putrid and they will have to work to play first team again.

I was hoping for fire and brimstone. We got platitudes and soft exxcuses.

Very poor from Sam I thought. He needed to show he saw the same issues as most of us. I hope he did.
Then you must not have watched. After we settled (and they had a coupe of gifted goals) we had a patch where we controlled play but couldn't convert our chances. Should have went into the quarter 3.2 and only 8 pts behind.

Went into the game tactically un prepared.
They played a game style we had no answer too
Completely out coached, out played and more importantly the displayed more effort
Best to forget about it and move on
How do you move on??
This List lacks AGrade talent. Who do we consider trading to get at least three first rounders.Recent drafts have masked where we are at.
With TAS coming in, we are going to be down a long, long time.
You can forget about Roughy’s role. FA and out of contract players and their managers want success.

I have nothing against Sammy, great player and servant of our club….
I was never sold on his coaching philosophy on how we should play….
Attacking and exciting style of game plan may look chic and thrilling to the eye but in the long run it won’t win you Grand finals…

Richmond were not the best or skilful team in their 3 premiership seasons…..
They were the best defensive and pressure side all over the ground, including their defensive set-up in the centre..

Our structure and positioning all over the ground defensively when we don’t have the ball is not quite right…..
It is questionable how we let teams move the ball with ease out of their defensive 50 into their forward line without any team pressure from us….let alone how easily teams take the ball out of the centre against us…

You could see the ease which the demons, Geelong and the scumbags moved the ball and scored against us…..
Last night it was so evident it looked embarrassing 😳 having 3 to 4 Hawk players standing within close proximity of each other as the suns just chipped the ball with ease into the forward line…

I believe and it’s only my opinion this is a coaching problem……
Either the players don’t understand the positioning of marking space or you have sold them on playing this exciting brand of football that the defensive aspect is not as important….

When you assemble any group of young players the first lesson they should be taught is the defensive and pressure aspect of the game both collectively and individually…It should be drummed into them….

That’s one aspect of the game which I think is missing completely and until we rectify this problem teams will continually score 100pts and over regularly against us….

I won’t go into other aspects and each individual player, we can be here all day discussing these issues only to say we have glaring problems….
I think last years end of run success was a smokescreen and we haven’t addressed the core of our issues…

What does Sammy Mitchell want to achieve….
He is into his 3rd year as head coach….
Does he believe we will play finals in the next 5 years….
Do we have a core down the spine to make this happen….ie, Full-Forward, Centre-Half Forward, Ruck, Full-Back, Centre-half Back….
What I see is 20 players trying to play an attacking game from half back, and teams already working this out….
Tactically as a young coach he has a lot to learn….

I believe we hastily appointed Sammy thinking we may lose him to another club…..
I hope he doesn’t have the same fate as the “Nathan Buckley” Syndrome with Collingwood….

We never do well with our own Sons…..
Peter Knights 1994 - 1995
Ken Judge 1996 - 1999
Peter Schwab 2000- 2004
Sam Mitchell. 2022 - ????

Our dominance and Success has always been from Outsiders….
Allan Jeans….
Alastair Clarkson….
The great John Kennedy was also a Collingwood man who came in and transformed this magnificent club of ours into the most successful modern club in the AFL….

We landed an outsider in 2004 with a bit of aggressiveness and overhaul the club into a powerhouse again….
In the long run this will happen once more….
History has a funny way of repeating itself…

The sky ain't falling Tops.

We have atleast 4 more drafts before Tasmania. That will be 7 drafts since Mitch took over.

That is actually as perfect timing as you can get. Ward, CMAC will be 25yo when Tas enters.

Butler nowhere near AFL level just yet
Our midfield falloff needs to be studied
First quarters horrendous, again.
Id be throwing Butler in the midfield for Box Hill for an extended experience and see how that looks. He has some pace and burst, but not sure on his game sense. Looks so far out of his depth at moment.

There is a big problem in our midfield around setup and strategy. Last year we were dangerous in the midfield and looked like we had an understanding of each other.

This year we look lost, out of position and lazy. The ball leaves out the front of a stoppage way to often and way to easily.

Something needs to change big time here.

Stoppages are a matter of inches. We just got bullied out of position too often by their mids.

It’s easy to lose patience and I’m struggling to keep the positives up this morning but we just have to stick fat. Lewis, Breust, day, wingard and cj all in that team in the next few weeks and will add a lot.
It will turn

I actually don't care about the loss, but the intent, intensity and just want for the contest well we barely gave a shrug. The biggest issue is how we stand up for team mates, when Watson in his first year has flown the flag more than senior players it really says something.

This starts with the coaches and at the moment the players play like Sam coaches, not how Sam played...

Start of 2017 was worse. The towel would be thrown in at half time and the thumping would commence.

Last year was awful as well at the start bar the North game.

2020 once we went to giants stadium the performance was bad. Especially the pies game. Might not have been thumped but the ball movement was terrible.

This year has had positives just the bad has been pretty bad. This is the only game though were the team has struggled all game.

Hey guys - yes I watched the wrong one.

SM said what had to be said.

The date on the presser was a clue. Shame I didn't actually read it before I posted.

Apologies guys!

Sorry Tops , dont agree
I would argue we have timed this as well as you could .
Teams on the down over the next few seasons will be greatly affected .
We should miss that curve so to speak

I actually think Frenchy and Ward will end up being very very good players for the club and don’t like impatience some people have. They both need games and experience and that’s what will pay dividends in the years ahead.

However Anderson was averaging 26+ touches a game at the point Ward was and Rowell was leading the Brownlow in his first season before a bad injury, I think they are unfair comparisons with our lot. They will be generational players.

The challenge I see at the moment is how we bring in that level for us. I’m not sure Ward and Mackenzie are that but it’s an unfair expectation for them to be.

Good post

Not Sure about the John kennedy a pie man though …where and when he never played there

That was really grim. At 0-5 it’s our worst start to a season in 54 years. The biggest concern is the marked regression in so many players. Development of players and game plan a real concern now.
Could easily be 2-3 also . Could be 1-4 .
We have left a few wins out there unfortunately

Last night was terrible and a step back.
Its one game .

The most disappointing was not being able to continue the momentum/form of the 2nd half last week.

No injuries is the positive. Probably some sore bodies. Meek copped a nasty hit.

We've got some very important players coming back soon.

Lewis, Day, CJ, Wiz and Wingers are 1-2 weeks away now.

Has Sam lost the players? Lots of apparent disinterest and half hearted attempts. Is his message missing the mark? I remember someone here mentioned the other week that maybe he's being too intellectual?
