AFL Toast Win Against Saints

Plenty of passengers today yet still snuck the win. A lot will be made of the Saints outs but we were missing plenty of personnel as well. Nice to snag four points when you're a long way off your best.
This has been a huge issue for us over recent years. Today seemed like a much more complete, team performance. Still had a few passengers (especially in the front half) but the 22(23) was good as a collective. With some important troops to return, I hope we trouble some sides this year

Watched the first 3 quarters on delay then kayo and my internet sharted it’s self. Dying to see the last quarter - couldn’t believe we won after I googled the result. Aints fans should be absolutely filthy as they were all over us and we played some disgusting football. It’s gonna be a long year watching the style we play, at least a lot of the boys have a crack but when you can’t hit a simple target or run both ways you won’t win a lot of games. We must of turned that around in the last
What is our "style" because its shit hard to figure out or im just an idiot

We don't usually give credit to opposition players, but I'll say one thing.
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is crazy good. Can kick the ball as good as anyone in the competition and very clever with ball in hand.

All the clubs who passed on him will be kicking themselves.
Looks the best field kick in the comp atm. He is gonna start to cop some serious attention tho

And yet the saints preferred to give it to Bonar.

Lol.

Few blokes who are using it exceptionally well at the moment..

Kane Farell (Port), NWM (Saints), Errol Gulden (Swans), Jordan Dawson (Adelaide), Zac Merrett (Dons)

You can see what scott is trying to do with martin by watching how dangerous NWM is.
From memory he was making alot of errors last year trying too hard to make the miracle kick but lyon stuck by him and its paid off. Hopefully scott sticking by martin will have similar pay off for us.

Lol.
I couldnt tell at the ground but did we put someone on NWM to take him out of the game or did saints just not use him as much as last week.
Bonner has been terrible 2 weeks in a row but hes still one of their most used guys coming out of the backline.

Our 2nd half was very good. Out pressured the Saints who are very good in this area.

Our style of play is fine. It is the execution by foot and hand that was terrible at times. Those plays hit the target and you can see what we are building. It is the turnovers that make us look second rate at times. Watching the top teams go about it, we have a long way to go in this area.

We dominated the last quarter and probably should have won by 3-4 goals.

Hopefully this win gives us confidence and belief we can stand up to peressure. Players have good skills at training, just need to replicate that under pressure.

I thought it was good when Lyon actually said that it was important to acknowledge your opponent which he then did often throughout the entire press conference. Good sportsmanship.
Ross came across pretty smug in the pre game interview. Chucked a reference to the Essendon Edge in there saying all clubs have a version… inferring the saints might give us a lesson.

So good to see him acknowledge Essendon. Will keep Caro off his back.

Tough game to analyse. Great to get the win and that showed some growing maturity.. sticking with things even when they are going badly, ran out the game fitter and stronger than Saints. Stringer, Langford, Heppell, Merrett all provided leadership and stepped up at the right times.

Our midfield got right on top after half time and were absolutely dominant and that was helped by the Draper/Goldy combo. I like the combo and I always feel we do well with 2 rucks. It means that Draper was a bit fresher in the last quarter and he made a bit of impact around the ground.

Nice to see Jones actually get a chance to run and jump.. the problem is that when teams plan for him and/or counter that.. he hasn't found a way to impact.. I'm still hopeful he will turn into what we need. Martin had a heap of the ball but if you actually looked at some of his disposal.. very limited damage. I'm not saying it was a bad game but needs to be a lot more damaging with ball in hand. Personally I still want him mid/wing/forward but I'm curious to see how it plays out.

The reality is that better teams would have buried us in that first half.. and even in the second.. it was often 3-4-5 turnovers in a row (from both sides) with some deplorable skills all round. Our defensive structure is too aggressive and when it gets cracked (which is frequently) it just becomes too easy to score. Again the defence gave up 2 goals just from our own stupidity down there.. and there were 2 others that were walk in goals coast to coast. Notice how we don't get goals like that.. we have to scrap for every goal and yet still seem determine to give cheap ones away. Need to adjust and have a rethink imho.

Overall very happy to get the win and looking forward to getting Riddles back.. he makes our backline look so much better. Wright back is positive. Shiel is a meh. Setterfield is def best 22 for mine, but we can cover his absence. I think Menzies will be looking over his shoulder and it is exciting to think that we have the Davey twins, Tsatis still sitting in the wings.

Finally.. McKay. So I like that we have a big body down back.. has been a huge upgrade on BZT and he can mark so that is a bonus but boy he makes dumb and/or lazy decisions. Turnover prone and no urgency. For the price we paid and the role he has.. I'd be having a quiet word in his ear about the level he can get to and needs to get too. If he can clean up the disposal.. can not wait to see him and Ridley in tandem.

Okay. Have had a couple of looks at the replay now.

The Jake Stringer free for a push was bollocks. I have heard Razor Ray explain several times on SEN say that you can use your hands in a marking contest to protect the drop zone if the defender is backing into it. That is what Stringer did. It was not a push.

Saints only goal in the last quarter was also rubbish from the umpires. You can not blow the whistle twice and then call advantage when all our blokes stop and then Jack Steele runs almost 22 meters through the middle.

Yes they missed some goals and you could say we where a little lucky but missing goals is poor kicking and it was no different to us stuffing up several chances inside 50 with poor skills before we had a shot. Skill errors are skill errors. We ended up with 2 more inside 50's but worse efficiency.

This week showed the Moorabbin match sim was exactly that. A managed match sim and not a game.

I know a lot will line up with Kelly out but he has to be replaced with someone who can play the role. His offensive output may have been limited but his defensive running and work around the stoppage as the bloke going body on body was very good. His ability to play the more defensive role allowed Duursma a bit more freedom to attack more. If someone replaces him they have to have that defensive mindset.

Short sighted snap judgment. If Jones keeps up similar form or Caddy is good enough to make his way in then I am only playing two of Draper / Goldstein / Wright. I say this because we just looked way more mobile .

11 tackles inside 50.

Defensive press very good from midway through the second quarter.

Sadly for Gresham it just didn't bounce his way.

Our defensive issues are not always through lack of effort. Sometimes it is through too much effort and trying to get to contests we can not get to. There are other times when we just have moments where we ball watch for a couple of seconds which allows players to escape behind us.

Need to sharpen up the short one step kicks. There are no excuses for turnovers when there is no pressure. It is just lazy and a lack of concentration.

Big tick for Heppell. Only a couple of mistakes and plenty of big saves for us.

Big tick for the side staying with a team that is known for its running over the whole game and we used 9 less interchanges.

I know most want Martin on the wing but I am glad they are trying something different to try and get the drive from half back. May not be the long term answer but we need to look at this stuff. So what if he had a lot of possessions that had limited impact. Fact is if he has 30 plus he is still going to have a lot that do.

Nick Cox is coming along okay. There are a lot less moments when you think he should have gone harder there. Still lacks the strength to body the stronger guys but is playing better footy when he can have long stints in defense .

Midfield had a battle early but ended up well on top.

Nothing better than being at a game when you run them down and hold in in a close finish.:)

We have no solid style. We are trying to build something which is why it is hard to figure out what it is. Our previous style has been flat track bully.

FFS, you’ll start a whole round of Hobbs is sh1t, should have taken Wanganeen-Milera posts… I can see the follow ups already:
  • Should have taken Wanganeen-Milera over Hobbs
  • You know Essendon only had pick 13 and Wanganeen-Milera went at 11
  • Good clubs trade up to get quality, Essendon never trade up
  • Traded up for Caddy
  • But we gave up too much to move up 1 place

Passengers or slow reactors ? I think right now pretty much all of them are giving it 100% but our bad habit is drop in concentration and transition time. or actually over cooking the effort and trying to push to a contest we can not get to or should not go to.
As far as troops coming back do not set yourself up for a fall . This will be more of a steady build. We will have more ups and downs. There is talent on the list but we are often not the sharpest tools on the field. I hope we can get on a bit of a roll but there are some fundamentals that may not change until the personal gets turned over.

wouldn't even call Menzie a passenger. A hair's breadth from his goal a game regime. Effort and endeavour was there from all concerned. Getting the ball well clear after gaining possession in a contest is where Essendon is well behind both StKilda and Sydney. Not expecting a win against a stung Port. See how it goes.

I completely forgot about the match sim from 6 weeks ago. Those hard melts were foolish in hindsight.

Good write up
I wonder how long the afl will persist with the whistle and advantage.
It surely makes more sense to adopt the prem league/rugby approach to allow the play minus the whistle stopping 4/5 of the field.

I am only playing two of Draper / Goldstein / Wright
Agree.

Also better maximizes our real strength forward - Langford and Stringer who are very, very good when isolated deep forward, 1:1. Wright benefits from playing high, chopping out in ruck and not being a constant focal point.

Goldy is my boy and I’ve quickly come to love him - but he plays VFL, develops Bryan and fills in when there is an injury.
