Work done by a player off the field can be just as valuable, if not more valuable than the work they do on the field.

Just take one look at Melbourne. They've had every opportunity to really develop a new core group of players with their young talent, but they had no one to help the transition from being the new kids, to being the players that the team relies on. It's one of the key reasons why they're a rabble.

which was why everyone was surprised when Mcdonald from melbourne was sacked.

Just an idea, is it worth hanging onto Winmar, or could we seek a trade where we take nearly anything that's offered.. In the time he's been on the list he's shown nowhere near enough signs to retain his spot, despite being contracted. Could we get out of his contract by trading him to someone and in turn picking up a young raw kid?

Depth?

Unless Koschitzke was legitimately burnt out due to that extended period of playing ruckman.
If the only way Kosi can get through a season is standing at the top of the goal square waiting for the contested mark he should be giving the game away. Short stints in the ruck is no excuse.

With Kosi what we're going to see next season is a classic case of a player going one season too long and that's not the way you want to see a great clubmen like Kosi go.

I vote for no more clauses in a contract ever.

Not playing well enough to warrant much attention, and not old enough to be desired by GWS or GC, so I'd say it's highly unlikely.

Kosi has a decent contract for 1 more year. Even if he knows in his heart that he's not really up to scratch he'd be stupid not to play on and take what's on offer before retiring from footy. He's given his all for our club and, despite his flaws, I can't begrudge him seeing out his contract.

What options to do the club have?
1. Keep Kozi on for depth, praise him for the good things he does (player development etc), and say thanks at the end of next year
2. Try to trade him (getting no biters and disrespecting a loyal clubman), angering nearly every other player in our team and possibly causing disharmony in the club

We made a mistake with the length and size of the previous contract, now we have to live with it. It's not the first or last time that'll happen to a club.

If Brodie Grundy is avail we take him no questions asked. He's a big bloke who is versatile, can play forward and is nimble for a big guy. He's one of the best ruck juniors from the last decade. Stanley is a preferred forward and having McEvoy and Grundy sharing the ruck and resting forward would be an awsome combination for the next decade. Yes please. Mute point anyway, he's that highly rated that he may even go at number 1 depending on GWS's needs. GC would love him and no way he goes past pick 2 IMO.

Realistically we pick the best avail player, period. If Stringer is still avail, get him cos he fills a number of holes with his versatility. I'm not sold on Mason, seems too one-dimensional and doesn't get a lot of ball. I could see him slipping down the order TBH. There are a few decent KPD's as well to consider. But bottom line we pick the best avail whether he's a mid / utility / KPP. It's when teams start picking for needs that they stuff up.

But if he is capable (in a few years) of shutting down the gorilla forward then surely he would be worth it. just look at daniel talia from the crows. has firmly cemented his place in a top 2 team as a key back and averages 8.2 possessions a game and 2.6 marks. if mason is in the backline with dempster, fisher, gwilt and gilbert (and you could even add goddard, siposs or gram) who are all ball magnets then it isn't essential that he gets a lot of the ball.

edit: i read he is a forward. if so, if he can kick goals does possession count matter?

I'd be happy to keep him as depth but I just worry he'll be played no matter what. His form was average at best for months before he was finally dropped but hopefully Watters has seen the light after subbing him off against Geelong.

I wonder how much Moloney was being paid at the D's
Moloney raises a few questions imo like at 28 at a new club with a new contract is he the kind of player that would trai hard and try to reinvent his career or will he just ride his new contract out. Can he kick? And how much would he demand compared to CJ. He might be a good replacement for Jones for a few years. If they want to trade Jones that is.

He has a contract for next year, Watters can't say he's not wanted, particularly about a loyal clubman like Kosi who's unlikely to want to play for another AFL team (not that anyone will offer him anywhere near what we're reportedly paying him).

Pretty damning that he's praising Kosi for the work he's doing internally rather than on the oval.

Another way to look at it is, Watters can be disappointed, disillusioned and not want Kosi for next year. BUT he is contracted and as a professional manager of people, he is looking at this situation in the best light. Kosi has a contract. Kosi is staying.

So stress the positive. Make him welcome. Internally he will possibly only be used for depth, in case of injuries, poor form etc, but find other positive roles for him to work with, ie development of a number of the junior players.

rookie list:
i am against delisting andreoli. 2nd year rookie, showed something before he suffered an LTI. shenton i think deserves one more year, given he's a 1st year rookie and we move him interstate and he showed something at the back end of the year.

archer definite delist. promote dunell, curren and look at promoting ferguson. that gives 3-4 free spots on the rookie list. i know the size is reduced but i cant remember by how much.

senior list:
peake
blake (retired)
polo
crocker

are the only ones i am certain on. problem is we want to draft a ready made KPD, Ruck. Also think scott is keen on getting cockie. so we need minimum 3 spots + 2/3 for rookie relevations + 2-3 new kids. that means we need 7-9 delistings from the senior list. dont know who the extra 3-5 will be.

Interestingly I'm more sure of Clarke than I am of Blake, and I'll be surprised if Shenton ( deserved or not ) will be there another year.

Agree with Andreoli, but the injury was untimely and Curren & Newnes can play the small defender role. With the reduction in the rookie list there will be very harsh calls. I think Woz does a good job pretty much every week, and his kicking is quite sound.

On Shenton, he's shown nothing as a forward (which was what he was recruited for). We don't need more half backs on the list, and I don't think he's shown AFL qualities (particularly in relation to his tackling - he has some serious technique issues!!!).

I was thinking that, why are we giving him playing contract and not a coaching one? Why waste cap space on him.

Depends how much he is being paid. I'd love to see him kick 50+ goals in the VFL, play AFL when he's fully fit and in form, and keep helping Rhys to develop. Also depends on whether Watters does find a backup ruck (say Shepheard) and a developing key forward (say Haretuku) - which were on his wish list.

AFL now running with story Peake has been told and they confirmed Peake in talks with East Fremantle.. But we already knew that..

ST KILDA Grand Final player Brett Peake is set head back to his native Western Australia.

After an impressive 2011 campaign in which he played 19 matches, Peake has not been a part of new coach Scott Watters' plans, playing only the first home and away game of the season.

The 29-year-old has spent the rest of the year playing for St Kilda's VFL team Sandringham, and returned to Perth two weeks ago to discuss his future with his original WAFL team, East Fremantle.

He travelled back to Melbourne in time to play in Sandringham's loss to Casey Scorpions, then the elimination final loss to Box Hill.

Sportsnewsfirst, a website run by Peake's management group confirmed the St Kilda defender/wingman was looking for other opportunities.

His manager Colin Young said he had plenty he could offer in the AFL.

"I truly believe Brett could play at AFL level for another four years, he is as fit or even fitter than he was when he was first drafted," Young said.

East Fremantle football operations manager Damien Gaspar said Peake had been in touch with the Sharks where he would most likely return to play in 2013.

"It is more than likely. He's got some strong relationships with players like Richard Hadley and Steven Dodd. He's played footy in previous years with those boys so he has those relationships," Gaspar told AFL.com.au.

"Apart from the fact he is not playing AFL I haven't delved into what his relationship is like with the Saints."

Peake's father Brian was a legend of East Fremantle, as well as spending four years at Geelong. His father-in-law Tony Buhagiar also spent six years playing for the Sharks, as well as stints at Essendon and Footscray.

Peake debuted for Fremantle in 2005 and finished third in the club's best and fairest in 2006. He played 75 games for Fremantle before he was traded to St Kilda at the end of 2009.

He played 43 games for the Saints including the 2010 drawn Grand Final and replay.

To me Brett Peake always seems to look better at AFL level than he does in VFL. I think his pace stands out more.
He seems like a very likeable guy who likes playing footy, but ultimately he is flawed, and StKilda extended his career when Freo were going to delist him.
Maybe Ross will rookie him.

GWS have delisted Steve Clifton. Was standout VFL player in '10 but been bit unlucky with injury this year. Is a tough midfielder and probably victim of them needing to downsize their list.
