Why are you keen to get rid of Jack Steele for picks then?

Jack Steele is an excellent high level player for sure. We don't need more very good though, we need a couple of absolute top shelf stars to take the next step. You aren't complaining if you get another Steele but the dream is for someone that one step up from him.
I’m not advocating trading Steele at all. I’ve openly said I can’t see anything in that.

But if I was going to.. it’s on the basis that I’m resetting the timeline and I’m getting 2 first rounders.

Steele in 2020/21 was a star of the comp. Silly to make out that there was a lot better then that version of him.

Would love a look at Campbell too. Routinely the sub. That left boot is schmick

He's been a disappointing player over all. He looked great in his draft year. He looked like Sydney were getting a massive free hit. Gulden ended up the pick of the academy kids. He's still doing enough to make big step up but he's getting closer to the edge the longer it goes without really breaking out.

I don't rate those guys as stars. Excellent consistent mids are not the absolute stars of the comp. I wouldn't even call Lauchie Neale a star. Star is more your absolute transcends footy types. Buddy, Dusty, Fyfe, Bont, Rooey etc.

That is an excellent level and nothing wrong with that at all but I think we'd all love another superstar type to carry us. The Saints were always in the poor house but we always had one or two guys that everyone lusted after. Lockett, Rooey, Harves types were the guys everyone wanted to come to their club. I'm not sure we have anything like that still. Nas is heading that way. Marshall, Wilkie and Sinclair are all A graders but probably just off that level of absolute top of the comp.

You don’t need to have longevity to be a star. Those that do are often players that transcend what came before them at their clubs.

Steele in 20/21 was a star of the comp.

If we drafted 2 mids this year that became as good as that version of Steele. We would be laughing.

You don’t go to the draft with the aim of drafting players that are modern era greats. You go to the draft hoping to land stars of the comp and if you get more then that’s a bonus.

If your expectation is Bont/Fyfe/Dusty/Rooey you’ll never be satisfied.

I reckon Ca

You wouldn’t call a 2 time Brownlow medalist a star? He’s a top 5 mid in the comp.

Brisbane are off broadway for Victorians but Lachie Neale is a genuine star.

He does the grunt work, and he does the finishing. You’ve got rocks in your head

Don't disagree. It's not like it's devoid of any talent. I just don't think there is a lot of absolute stand out. Doing the phantom draft is interesting, it's not as easy as it looks even with Langford and Smilie who should be a haul I'm not 100% confident that you are getting two guns.

I think Langford looks like a Jack Steele level player who if attitude and talent allow might be a step above but doesn't seem to have that absolute X factor.

Smilie could be a total bust or an absolute star. His Champs performances were pretty shit to be honest. Looked half interested at times.

I think Jagga is forming as top 3 for sure so won't get access to him. Think he's probably more guaranteed as a high end POD mid.

FOS- injured and ordinary on return but probably last year looked a pick 1, Hotton, injured so a dice roll, Reid- a bit slow but elite looking, Travaglia- maybe Will Day but maybe more Zac Jones, Trainor looks blue-chip but probably gone and not really a need, Draper a class player but not an absolute ball-pig bull, Lalor has some power and strength but lacks polish and could be a gun or a spud. Bo Allen and Lindsay both look good but probably a reach for either at our pick.

Those guys just off the top end probably where there is a bit of value I reckon. A lot of the talls and small forwards look good. Armstrong, Berry, Kako, Whitlock, Faul, Shanahan, Tauru, Sims etc.

Then that next crop of could be anythings Moraes, Gross, Oliver, Hynes etc.

I'd like lots of irons in the fire because I think you'll get talent all through this one but not necessarily the order that they are picked at. It's a real crapshoot.
I’m gonna show you how flawed this thinking is Gringo

2023

Kelly - too thin, not an inside mid
Bont - slight uncoordinated, terrible champs , no size
Cripps - Oversisef, slow, poor kick
Merret - not a real mid, small,

Reality is every single kid has flaws, things to work, they are kids remember.

We are not privy to the club meetings, the coaches messages before every game , injuries etc etc. you have to look at the draft with a little bit more balance imo.

Robert’s looks fantastic. McDonald looks very good aswell.

Rowbottom and McInerney would walk into any sides. They are good players.

Have actually met Matty Roberts a couple of off seasons ago as we have mutual friends that brought him along to summer soccer in Strathalbyn (SA). Typical country kid, raised in Langhorne Creek. Good bloke, all my mates were telling me he’d be a star when he got drafted to the Swans.

Looks a great young footballer. Wish we had him!

I'm not expecting it but you want guys with high ceilings too. I think Langford will be a very good and solid player is my point. I'm not really sure what you are trying to argue. If he ends up Jack Steele level it would be a massive win and no-one would be unhappy with it. You still want to dream of Dusty and Fyfe though.

I don't rate either as star quality. Both absolute elite mids but the star class is a level above that to me. Bont, Trac, Dusty etc.

Even guys like Curnow who Carlton fans think is a star are probably not quite absolute stars IMO. I reckon stars are the types that you can ask an NRL fan if they've heard of them and they know who it is.

It feels like a bit off a lull period right now with a few kids coming through and the old guard getting on.

Cripps and Merrett both drifted out. They weren't top 6 picks. Kelly I don't remember anyone saying he was too thin in his draft year. He seemed to be a hyped player and went at 2 or 3 from memory.

Bont was a guy who came storming up the boards late and was hyped beyond belief. I read recently that he split recruiter's opinions with some having him as high as pick 2 and some late first round.

Of course all drafts have question marks over players but I feel like there are more fundamental questions with this one.

He's one of the best players in the league but don't think he's a star. A star is Buddy or Dusty. He's not that.

Lol Liz Hurley could be available at pick 5 and she would be too old and elbows might be too pointy for some.

Everyone has a 'flaw' and isn't perfect in absolutely everything
Liz Hurley and Shane Warne has to go down as one if the weirdest combos ever. Either Warney scrubs up alright in the gentleman's lounge or Liz likes it rough as guts.

The second weirdest ever combo after Flavor Flav and Lionel Blair.

That is the resume of a star.

Buddy & Dusty are generational superstars and to be honest if Lachie Neale wins a 3rd Brownlow this year, or a norm smith he will go down as a modern great.

i reckon warnie and james packer were in competition, same time comparing notes, could just imagine them doing that,i think it ended when packer got mariah, warney couldnt beat that, dont know how it went when mariah came out and claimed they never did the deed

as for Liz,for such a hot woman many guys just dumped her, have to wonder if she was disappointing

If any 2 of Smith, Draper or Lalor are still available at 5&6, I'd love to pick 2 of those.

Should 2 if them be taken, I'd rather us take the punt in splitting 6 for 2 picks in the 10s, (freos 10+17 for example)

The talent is pretty even throughout, there will be a few diamonds who will slide.

I like it, but knowing our luck Freo will pick the next Serong and we'll pick the next Matt Allison and Ben Long

The awful conditions didn't much bother Travaglia who seemed to enjoy sliding around and crashing into people in the mud. His nine tackles were a standout, but perhaps more impressive was his ability to hit the scoreboard and convert with a slippery footy. Unfortunately, not enough of his teammates followed his example, and Bendigo suffered a heavy loss.

Regardless of the naysayers King, NWM, Pou and Wilson are our recent first rounders and are all excellent players with NWM and Pou going to be stars, King the potential to be a star and we don't know about Wilson.
Only miss since 2018 has been Alison.

We have been fine with our draft selections

How’s the Harvey Langford video coming along ?

My point is that all these kids have ‘weaknesses’ ‘ even the top top guys. It’s the extra stuff that recruiters will look for. I suppose in summary the weaknesses are overstated at this stage. Ultimately it’s a risk, the downside though is somewhat limited.
