List Mgmt. 2024 List Mismanagement and Trading Part 2

Since 2000 - here are a list of 1st round Ruckman with Bolded. Angwin, Barry Brooks, Hamish McIntosh, Jayson Laycock, John meson, Patty Ryder, Luenberger, Kruezer, McEvoy, Lobbe, Nic Nat, Vickery, Cordy, Gorringe, Grundy.

To my knowledge there has only been one ruckman taken in the TRUE first round* since Grundy went at 18 in 2012 and that was Sydney using pick 16 for Will Greene.

AFL teams have learned not to use draft capital on ruckman. They take too long to develop and even if you land a good one - they are not a key piece of a premiership winning list.

*I dont care what the AFL tries to tell us about what is and what is a first round pick. If there are 18 teams - then those first 18 players off the board are the first round picks. In 2023 - pick 29 was considered a bloody first round pick and there were only 8 third round picks....
Melbourne on Jackson

Jackson was WAs ruck at the U18s championships

This is definitely the most negative Club Board, which never used to be the case 10 years ago .....who'd have imagined the degree of negativity, after securing Cumming, ANB, and a pick 4 in a "SuperDraft" .....in years gone by, this would have resulted in a really positive vibe

But no, I think too many posters enjoy wallowing in negativity ......
I don't enjoy it, but it sadly seems to be what passes for reality at the AFC.
A 'positive vibe' needs more than;
  • our track record over the last 5 years
  • a demonstrated reluctance to make significant list/personnel changes (at every level)
  • trading in two hopefully above average (but nowhere near elite) players
  • appointing an unknown quantity 'football director' to an unknown role and
  • pick 4 in a super draft - earned by finishing 15th in a forgettable season - and our first round pick record makes this even more of a lottery than it usually is.
So, in the absence of any headline-level good news, I shall wallow on.

Unless of course, anyone has seen any encouraging chicken entrails or tea leaves

"The sky is falling! We are all doomed" is the default position of the "others" (you know who you are). ;)
So can we all just agree to shut up and be happy that the sky is falling?

Most are cautiously hopeful but have questions about the suitability As you yourself have said - and others

The club psychopants are the ones shouting us down. Its like they only want to hear rainbows and lollipops and that the club never makes mistakes

Again I am quite happy we approached Davis for a role. I'm concerned about what the level may be

In:
Peatling
ANB
Cumming
#4
Welsh

Out:
Sloane
Himmelberg
McHenry
Gollant
Burgess?

I'd like to make another live pick in what's a strong draft, so maybe we'll move a couple to the rookie list to replace Parnell and Hamill (two of Schoenberg, Strachan and Smith would be my guess).

Assuming we land your listed ins (and Burgess is contracted) we have no more vacant list spots. Would need to move on a contracted player.

Parnell and Hamill are OOC. Fair call with Schoenberg. If we brought in a Knobel/Heath type of ruck back up, we’d have no reason to not cut Strachan now. Whether we pay him for 2025 now or next year, he ain’t playing AFL over them.
I'd be more than happy to cut and payout Strachan and bring in a ruck who can actually run out a game of AFL football.

Delisting Parnell & Hamill only allows us to move one player to the rookie list.

You've forgotten to include Turray in your IN list.

Do we have to promote him or can he stay as a rookie?

Didn't we have five rookies (Keane, Borlase, Murray, Hamill and Parnell).

Goes to show a week really is a long time in football. From fearing we'd miss out on Perryman and Cumming to the Pear, to follow Lukosius...

... to now winning the pitch for Cumming, bringing in Murray Davis (and maybe Montgomery?), and coming from absolutely nowhere to land Peatling.

Just need to secure Draper or Lalor at Pick 4 now, and hang onto our F1.

Seriously exciting times.

We also need to get enough later picks to pay for Welsh, should we get a nasty early bid for him from Sydney.
Of course, he might slip so far that we get him for nothing as a rookie.

We don't want to be embarrassed by poor bookkeeping.

Okay, with us securing Peatling's nomination, I am now firmly of the belief Burgess is not contracted, or is being delisted whilst contracted. It makes the most sense with the list maths at our disposal.

If he is:

Out: --> In:
Sloane --> ANB
Himmelberg --> Cumming
McHenry --> Peatling
Gollant -->Pick 4
Burgess -->Welsh

Hamill-->Turray
Parnell--> Open Rookie spot

For us to get our 3 draft picks, we demote a senior player to the rookie list. Or upgrade Keane and have a spot open in the rookie draft as well as a re-rookie of a senior list player.

If Burgess is contracted, the Keane move makes the most sense, and a delist/re-rookie, which means no rookie draft spot.

Can stay as a rookie.

Delisting Hamill & Parnell leaves us with Keane, Borlase & Turray + 1 vacancy on the rookie list.

With only 1 vacancy, we can only move 1 senior list player.

Promoting Keane (or Borlase) frees up another position on the rookie list, but also fills another position on the senior list. It's a zero-sum game, but it does mean we'd only need to make 2 selections in the ND (pick #4 and Welsh).

That'd be pretty underwhelming, hopefully we can move on a contracted player.

The Berry extension is still odd to me, especially now that Peatling has chosen us.

Need a spot for trading up on draft night if Dodson looks to be available

Delist and rookie Smith, no-one will pick him up.
