Did we need to change our game plan ? Most definitely

Did we do a good job of improving our defence but maintain our offence ? Definitely not , we improved our defence at expense of our offence

We basically took away some of our strengths with our tweaked game plan , it was right idea but poorly executed and likely poorly coached / poor coaching resources

So was SYD’s downfall on SAT due to the players unaccountability … or Longmire

Players make coaches, it’s always been the way
Given his grandfinal record over a long period with lots of different players, what do you think?

I think he definitely changed the focus from attacking to defence (as he saw this as a distinct issue with our inability to defend a lead or finish out close games). There's no doubt that by focusing on that aspect of our game, our attacking flair went to shite. After 4 losses, they finally realised what they were doing wasn't working.

I think he wanted the increased defensive pressure because he wanted to start our offense through opposition turnovers - but that was just my assumption. Yours could be equally true.

Do we think Nicks would ever consciously put less emphasis on defense pressure though? I mean, maybe ...

I did a comparison during the year, for those first four games we negligibly improved our defence, when we reverted to our attacking game plan not only did we vastly improve our scoring but there wasn’t much difference in our defence.

I also question whether we needed to change our game plan, we had the 9th best defence. We had a young defence last year, with natural improvement, more experience and playing more together it was naturally going to get better and we saw that with a number of players this year.

The other aspect of our defensive mindset is pushing Murphy up the ground around the contest, leaving our forward line outnumbered which is crucified with slow ball movement and as we saw with intercept defenders running amok early. Best way to defend is get the ball in quickly to give your gun forward line a chance otherwise if it’s outnumbered the ball will rebound easily and quickly and you’ve shot your self in the foot.

Buyer Beware on Oliver

He comes with risk and baggage

Absolutely. But what can't be denied is how good he is at his best.

This situation is going to be really interesting.

If you get 21/22 Oliver - it doesn't really matter the price. If you get 2023 Oliver - you overpaid no matter what.

This is one where its incredibly tough as an outsider to know what he is worth.

Most of our issues come down to the midfield.

We aren't good enough in the clearances, so have to push extra numbers in there, which robs from the forward line.

We lack pace and two way running.

Most of our mids are poor by foot.

Obviously the coaches can see this weakness but until we can get better personnel in there, any changes they make just feel like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Laird's time should be done.
Crouch's days are numbered.
Berry is not the answer.

Yep, our defence is put under pressure when we lose the clearances like any defence would.

So improve our midfield, don’t slow down how the team moves the ball once they’ve actually won it.

Nicks is a bloody moron.

Gut feel is it'll be announced Peatling will be staying at their BnF.
Hope I'm wrong.
Look, it is what it is if he does stay. He has been public about loving it there. The big one for us was Cumming imo and we landed him so Peatling whilst late in the piece as an option and would have been very good does not detract from the win in landing Cumming for what we need across half back.

As long as pick 25 is NOT used for ANB, there is likely to be some very promising prospects there at that pick in the draft.

I think Berry has a place in the rotation, more so as a negating player. Unlike most of the others he's defensively minded and hard working.

Wouldnt pick him every week mind you.

It’s been couple years since his best, we said the same about Wayne Carey

It does not seem to be a coincidence that the Giants offering an extra year for Peatling is leaked the morning of their B&F day, certainly feels like he will stay now. I guess it just depends if there is a club offering 5 years (which Twomey has hinted at before) and whether that is enough of a difference to get him out.
