Melican really allowed McCartin the freedom to play the intercepting role. Tonight showed why we have been so into McKay but.......

Melican's performance showed why we don't need to pay circa 800k a year to get a lock down key defender. Most of this type are usually lurking late in a draft or rookied, not bought for top dollar. Plus Ben is a spud just like his brother.

that season was a s**t show overall

im glad they had some fight

but we pissed away a year overall imo sorry.

going s**t and clawing back into the 8 is like starting s**t tonight and fighting back, yeah a good effort but whats a good effort get you

I am sorry but we are better than or at least as good as the 4 teams playing next week, ****ed the season, and sorry most wont agree and will be super proud we just competed, but * that, this side is better than that

Fitness staff can go and the players need to execute under pressure
C'mon mate. After our GF shellacking last year I thought most of our young players would spend the entire year vomiting at the sight of a footy. There's mental toughness there if you care to see it.

Season had a lot of ifs and buts……whatever the issues w the face outs, the poor play, injuries etc etc, lots to look at over the summer….but tonight, we were up against it and didn’t give up which was great to see. Missed a chance this season, hopefully, going into the off season with that game is a positive and we can improve where we need to.

Better side won, but I think a clutcher side would've pinched it at the end. Needed a bit more composure after getting it to within two goals.

Still a pretty fantastic effort to come back despite that. It wasn't our best performance by any stretch of the imagination, but we at least didn't capitulate. Losing a close final hurts, but it's usually a much better area to bounce from compared to getting flogged.

Positives - arguably McCartin's best game all year, McLean great, Gulden great, Blakey getting better as the game went on. Think Parker looked the goods up forward too, he does look a step too slow to be playing midfield these days though.

Midfield needs to develop more consistency. And above all, it's not the first time poor goalkicking has cost us. Boy has our goalkicking been patchy.

Yeah basically this. The injuries decimated us.

Also it's a welcome relief that Hickey is retiring. Maybe we can get an actual ruckman who can jump in the off-season. Probably another player to fill in the cracks. I think all we need is a proper ruckman who can knock the ball to advantage and our mids will improve tenfold.

A shame about the season. It was the season from hell. Just couldn't catch a break.

Can't fault the endeavour in that second half, it looked like they didn't have it in them but they did not let up.

Amartey is an imposter. If you're reading this pull your finger out and make a contest ya big ****

Need a ruck and goal kicking practice. Also need more hunger. We were second at the ball and hesitated too much. Need to stop being a nice team and start getting the animal in us. We have the base for a good team but it needs to be brought out

Last two weeks have been abysmal

True - im not against the fact we've kicked poorly at times throughout the year. I'm not entirely convinced by the simplistic argument of 'more goal kicking practice' as the antidote though. Considering we kicked really really well for quite a long streak of games before the last two. Might be a bit more to it than that.

That side is better than 8th easily imo, maybe I overrated the list

parker forward is months late, hes been cooked for ages in the middle

R1 next year he should be a forward that does some forward stoppages. Roberts into the mid rotation

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, BUT, I'm really happy with this result,

IMO, we look like we would've been thrashed against Melbourne who are another level better than Carlton, and to go out on a close heart breaker is so much more rewarding than going out on a 80-point demolishing.

All signs showed improvement at the end of the year, and I look forward to seeing us next year

yeah, absolutely ... that pretty much told the story of our whole season ... gave away a dumb start, kept digging ourselves out of holes, then back into more holes ... until finally getting it together and dragging us right back to the brink of a miracle ...
it's a damn better memory than our last mcg final
i think it's wrong right now to be looking for scapegoats from that game ... most of them did something good and something bad ... well, except gulden ... geez ... he doesn't do much bad at all ... and anything he does wrong he makes up for doing two more things right, he's a bona fide superstar right now

mclean and blakey, mccartin, campbell, hickey, mills, parker forward ...

overall disappointing, obviously, but a lot to look forward to ... that effort will erase a few mental demons too, i'm sure
add mckay to that defence, and maybe somehow we get grundy for hickey, we'll be a very good side

Bring on 2024 - 60th bday year for this old girl - cmon boys let’s make it our year. 🤞🤞🤞 we get Grundy

but weve had some great players who’ve had to retire - I hope Paddy Mac that you have good health & happiness you and your brother were a formidable duo in our backline. , Tom Hickey , you’ve enjoyed your last years with us and we’ve loved you for it. And then there was Buddy, what a thrill it was that you came to our club, you brought Sydney AFL alive and what a privilege it was to watch you in our colours. Life goes on I guess. Bring on 2024❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️

That might have been tactical, to play him as a defensive forward on Weitering? Commentators were talking about it.

But agree I think he should play more forward next year, a la Jude in his later years
