Dowling is a far better kick than any of the players he would potentially replace (and certainly has the ability to hit the scoreboard too), but that’s fair, his field kicking isn’t elite. It’s “safe”.

As for Taylor, like most / all players his kicking efficiency takes a hit when he plays an inside role, but chuck him on a wing or at half forward / half back and he will lace far more targets than anyone he’s replacing IMO.

One thing’s for sure - we can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. We have proven failures running around each week and it’s time to see what the rest of the list can offer.
Taylor would be way more effective than murphy in the same role. Nicks just can't figure it out.

I mean what's his excuse gonna be? He's not fit enough to play at half forward? He's not ready? But a pile of shit murphy with no talent is? No mate, you’re just an incompetent coach.

Doesn't matter who we pick if we're just going to bomb it down the line all day long.
+1 This

Last week and now this week the game plan looks woeful. I wonder how much losing rahilly has cost us.

I recall one time in the game where we somehow broke their press and moved the ball fast through the middle and it ended in a burgess goal where we had a 2 on 1 inside forward 50. We can do it...inspite of the game plan

I will say, if Smith gets selected vs Freo, it’s enough evidence for me that there’s something genuinely fishy at the club re: protecting senior players and ‘leaders’

Literally everything he touched turned to s**t
Sticking with very out of form senior players because you are trying to make Finals thinking their form will change isn't new. But Smith's game last night was beyond very out of form, it was a game that tell you he should retire (that kick he did was the worst kick ever in the AFL).

Yeah, I think there's a significant difference between Smith now and say picking Sloane in the back half of last year when he was not playing well but the team was in the running for finals, was lacking in experience/leadership on field and mature bodies in general, and where Sloane had put in some good performances earlier in the year.

In this case it's early in the year, he has had one relatively poor and one extremely poor game, and there's other people that can play a similar role in the squad they could consider bringing in like Nankervis, Parnell and Hamill.

The only thing I can see saving Smith is that the defence/rebound play in general is struggling at the moment. I'd say he's 50/50 to be dropped this week but won't be around for long if he doesn't improve significantly.

Even Sloane who is totally cooked wouldn't embarrass himself that badly. If I were Nicks, I'd call Brodie into my office on monday morning and tell him he just played his last game of AFL.

He’s been horrendous for years with every 5th or 6th game being a good one, almost always against bottom 4 trash. He can’t defend, he can’t win hard balls, he fumbles, he has no strength in contests, and now, he can’t kick. He actually hasn’t been able to kick for 5 years but that was hidden by him hoisting them 60m to nobody and his defenders would point to his metres gained as some sort of wonderful stat, paying no attention to the fact that 90% of these kicks were to 50/50 contests at absolute best and created nothing for the team.

He’s horrendous, and elevating this head-dropping, front-running perennial loser to the leadership group shows just how clueless this club is about what is required for success.

I would drop Smith Murphy and Laird, but of course that’s not going to happen.

What will The Man do?

“Back the boys in” seems the flavour and likely result.

Perhaps he should visit this site for some “lateral thinking” or more likely just “some thinking”.

The thought of three more seasons of this crap has my stomach turning.

I’m going to watch Hawthorn today who will lose with a very young side full of midfielders they’ve actually recruited and are getting games into. They will blast past the Crows in two years time as we sack Nicks and start the next rebuild.

I’m so salty today, that was awful.
We will have no supporters left is Nicks sees out his contract. Contracts mean bugger all if a team keeps losing. He will be gone this year if we dont finish better than 10th.

Brodie Smith needs a spell, but they aren't going to drop him, a club great going into game 249/250 (I'm not sure which one it is), Sam Berry was average, and Rory Sloane would have been better. They need to decide if they are playing Mark Keane as a key back, and if not he needs to go too.

OUTS:
Sam Berry, Luke Pedlar, Lachie Murphy, Mark Keane, Brodie Smith

INS:
Brayden Cook, Ned McHenry, Billy Dowling, Dan Curtin (is he ready? if not maybe Elliott Himmleberg?), Will Hamill, Luke Nankervis

Swing the Axe this week and prove a point by dropping two Leadership Group players, also not opposed to Tex missing this week (he looked slow/personal reasons) for either Lachie Gollant or possibly Patty Parnell

No good continually recycling Hamill and Himmelberg

Has Curtin actually done anything yet? Do people not think it's worth him playing a game or two in the SANFL to see how he goes before throwing him into the AFL side, especially when he's had an interrupted pre-season?

I feel like a lot of the time on here when people are calling to 'play the kids' its really for entertainment purposes because they are excited to see how the new player goes rather than because they think they will be an upgrade on the current side. Whatever role Curtin would play - probably rebounding defender - I feel like there's better choices outside of the first team who would also benefit from the run, like Nankervis.

The club should trust our head recruiter who took this guy with our best pick and claimed he was one of the best juniors in the country.

Why do we need to put him through a trial in our crappy injury depleted SANFL side? Are the coaches unable to tell from his ability at training, or are unwilling to trust a fellow member of their football department?

We have at least half a dozen substandard players in our AFL side at the moment and I'm confident playing Curtin is a step towards creating our best team for a flag

It's possible for him to be one of the best juniors in the country and also not ready for AFL yet, obviously, especially given fitness issues.

Agree, Nankervis has shown he has something in the AFL games he played last year so he should come in for Smith (even with 0 disposal he would have done better than Smith did last night).

Swing the axe by all means but Tex for Parnell??
