Unofficial Preview Changes vs GWS

If Jacobs and Greenwood come in next week then it makes sense. Tigers are without their ruck, running a few guys back from injury and some youngsters in, get a fresh Jacobs in to give our mids first use and Greenwood back to hopefully being able to play at a high level over 4 quarters.

If Jacobs, Greenwood, Sloane and Gibbs all are inclusions we actually look like a strong side that could roll them.

Lets also note importantly that torrential rain is expected on Thursday week. So off a 5 day break, 4 fresh players at least compared to the Tigers could ultimately be the difference.

Ideally the Tigers have a very contested game against the Cats, while the Giants use us as witches hats and go throw the motions of smashing us.

Im confident of us beating the Tigers, but only if we are smart towards our approach with player management. In fairness to the selectors they should be judged not tonight but in a weeks time.

There might just be a method to their madness.

Still can't really get a grasp on our overall plan.

If we're going all out to win then surely Gibbs/Greenwood are better current footballers than Murphy and Gallucci (in any role).

And if we're keen to keep some younger players in to develop them and build a faster team... fine. But why bring Douglas back?

It's like we're choosing the worst of both worlds. Not picking our strongest team now and not developing our team for the future.

Couldn't agree more.

You could make a sizable list of the odd selection decisions we've made.

- Bryce Gibbs. Is he in the best 22 or not? Yo-yoing week after week. Playing him all over the park. Why?
- Backing in our four-tall defense against a smaller team like St Kilda, then a few weeks later deciding nah we actually should make structural changes to match the opposition (against Melbourne)
- Stacking the side with wings, forcing players like Milera and Seedsman to play forward, then changing that the following week so they're either playing actual wing or even on ball
- And on that, selecting Seedsman as a replacement for Lynch as if Seedsman is suitable for that role
- Praising the performances of players like Gibbs then dropping them
- Using the half forward and forward pocket roles to blood and develop players like Gallucci, Jones and Murphy but then revert back to a 32-year-old Douglas in that role the instant he is ready
- Dropping Greenwood not after he as a shocker against Brisbane, but after he nearly wins the game for us against Melbourne
- Taking McHenry as a travelling emergency, thus ensuring he has a month without playing any football
- Playing Fogarty in defense in the SANFL then saying we want him "pressing for selection" so switch him forward

If it was my job to select the side, based on what I saw on Sat night I am managing Sloane and Seedsman this week, and not bringing in Matt Crouch.

Play the long game and try and get these key assets back to match fitness, rather than risk further injury. I’d even assess Betts who looked sore as well.

That means keeping Gibbs and Greenwood. Hard to know what to make of it from the outside. Greenwood finished very strongly last week and Gibbs played his role.

Hartigan is sensibly in, and I am playing Jones for development.
MacKay out, Knight in with defined tagging role.

The more people melt, the more confident i am that we may win.

Nothing makes me more nervous than the Lindys being in agreement

FULL LINDY will only be fully engaged next Wednesday night if the selections are such where it was not a management of players. That would be their saving grace for this week.

Note - Selection Night comes one day earlier next week. :rainbow:

I think Murphy gets a consistent gig because of his pace. Crows still miss Charlie C. See it as a point of difference.

Love to know how Murphy compares to B Davis, or McHenry for speed and overhead prowess if anyone has a good read on it?

I'm still not getting why this means why we have dropped Gibbs to the SANFL though.

He played ok last week, including tagging their most dangerous player last week... so mentally ok to play football.

If he needed a break, why is he playing SANFL? Wouldn't we give him a complete break?

I don't get it...

Surely his dropping is unrelated to non-football issues. Maybe they didn’t want to tag but were forced to because he didn’t get near it in the second quarter and they thought he might as well sit on someone if he’s not touching it himself.

You can accomplish both. I don't think they picked Douglas going "welp, we'll lose but..."
I'm struggling to understand what Douglas provides that Greenwood or Gibbs don't. So I'm going with the premise that he's just viewed as best 22 and Greenwood is going to get a Jarryd Lyon contract at years end, to help the club pay off Gibbs' habit.

We had that very impressive stats guy come out and explain why we're leading the sports analysis charge so I'm assuming that, despite Hugh being better overhead, better at keeping his feet, better at tackling, better at not giving the ball up under pressure and better at influencing games at key moments, there's some obscure measure that says that Douglas' career average of about 15 vanilla possies and his ability to go missing and/or shit the bed at key moments is far more valuable to the team.

Let's call it the Atkins measure.

And what if Greenwood is back next week? You've already thrown the baby out with the path water when there's still plenty of options and reasons at play here.

I could maybe see the justification in selecting Douglas if we had dropped, say, Murphy or Gallucci for him. But Greenwood? Yikes

If our plan was to rest Greenwood, it would have been nice for the club to be upfront and honest about it like they usually are when we rest or manage players.

The club has specifically said it's "team balance" and "not form" for these omissions, plus Greenwood is named in the SANFL and as an emergency. So that suggests he isn't being managed.

If Greenwood plays in the SANFL then comes straight back for the Richmond game, we can add that to the list of odd selection choices

Who is the bigger challenge, GWS or Richmond? When you consider that Sloane is a likely withdrawal, dropping Gibbs and Greenwood means you've lost half your midfield, replacing them with a slow and underdone M Crouch and a bloke we know won't give us Greenwood's grunt or composure. Im sorry mate, there is no justification for Douglas coming in. Not form, not runs on the board. GWS are quick and we bring in a bloke who doesn't chase and sucks under pressure.

There is no plan.

It would be great if Don and the other coaches were upfront and said “ The last three weeks have been very tough and most of the boys are struggling after the match in Darwin. We will rest a couple of the guys and just hope the rest of the team can hold it together and then get ready for the Tigers off a 5 day break.”
