Review Dees v Carlton: the Good, the Bad and the Fugly

I thought hogan was alright. He competed hard and kept at it all day. Didn't clunk his marks but he was far from our worst.

I agree, he never stopped having a crack and it wasn't like his man was straight up beating him in any contest. Key forwards aren't going to dominate every week, as long as they at least compete it opens up opportunities for guys like Garlett.

Saw the best and worst of Jack Watts today, hopefully he takes the best into the rest of the season.

The good:
-Hunt's run on the flank where he took it on twice (late third or late qtr?) got us heading in the correct direction when we were very flat. Watts had some very positive impact out of the centre in this period.
-Salem was wonderful, as was Nev as per usual.
-Jeffy was terrible in the first quarter then turned it on when needed.

The bad:
-Should not have been that difficult.

-They played two back for most of the game so any rebounds resulted in a two or three vs jeffy in our 50. We still could not produce anything coming out of the backline.

-Any other team would've pulled our pants down with what we produced. Carlton are rubbish but Geez that Cripps is something isn't he?

Fugly: Hogan. He just didn't feel like it today. Absolutely terrible.

Shower thought: We can have the AA ruckman and have no impact out of the centre or put Jack Watts up and get a better result. With the success of the hawks and the dogs is the role of the ruckman really that important? Max has turned games on their head with taps to advantage but today was a perfect example of winning the ruck contest then losing the centre clearance consistently. In these cases send Max deep forward and get someone else to take the taps? Just a thought.

Is there a way to dislike this post? I've disagreed with posts before but I really want to dislike this.

In regards to Hogan, while he didn't set the world on fire today, partly to blame is the way the mids moved the ball so slow and sideways if they didn't turn it over. Hogan was playing from behind not different to last week, but our ball movement was terrible today. Hogan had a down day but it wasn't entirely his fault.

Watts as another poster said saw the best and worst of him today.

Mids were towelled up

Clarry was superb

Tmac Jetta and Hunt were reliable down back

Jetta was super in the forward line. I wish the ball carier coming forward would actually kick the ball low and hard if he is one on one in the forward 50 instead of kicking high in the air

We got four points let's move on to next week

What is wrong with it? Hogan actually was fine around the ground, he just didn't clunk any inside 50. I'm not going to shit on a guy who is at worst halving the contest.
Yeah great halving the contest mid field and leaving Jeffy with three opposition in the forward 50. Then missing one a crucial one in front from 30 out. If I have to tell you what's bad then I'm wasting my time.

I'm not saying he dominated but he honestly wasn't that bad, a 5/10 game from him. You're acting like he has had 5 touches and his man ran off him all day.

I was told once that good teams find a way to play shit and win. So I guess playing horrendously shit and winning must make us seriously good... right?

Ugly

Harmes in over the Bugg.
Goodwin's love affair with Melksham.
Watts' criticism! Seemed a little unjust, half our team was off.

Bad
Tyson's disposal in the first.
More disposals, clearances, hit outs and everything else but barely any scoreboard pressure to show for it.
Taking three quarters until we figured out how to beat Carlton

Good
Salem played a blinder in the first.
Oliver can't kick as well as he can handball but jesus, what a player.
Jeffy! That chase and tackle was wonderful. Sealing the game was wonderful.
Jetta, goddamn. Criminally underrated.
Nathan Jones.

Gonna need to see the replay on this one, not sure I can stomach it just yet though!

The Good:

Salem, great game.
Oliver's first 15 minutes were fair dinkum unbelievable.
Tyson, welcome back son.
TMac, extremely important and kept us in it when Carlton ascended in the 3rd.
Jeffy Jeffy Garlett, he loves playing the Blues
Nathan, when the chips were down he was the one who rallied the troops.
Watts, was quite important (with one asterix)
Escaping with a win.

The Bad:

Viney had a stinker, kept trying to stand under the ball instead of leading to space
Hogan getting sucked in.
The centre clearance work.

The Ugly

Our disposal...the reliance on short kicks is okay but it doesn't work when you aren't hitting them. Wasn't the usual suspects today either.
Watts' two dropped bloody chest marks, I was getting Dawes flashbacks.

I didn't give him votes so I'll say it here: another great game from Jetta. He's intelligent, tough, a good decision-maker, finds space and a great spoiler.

Can someone elaborate on the Dom hate? Thought he played his part today – not a bad return I thought. Did I miss something?

Just FF through the 3rd quarter, you'll feel better about yourself

Never thought I would say this but our midfield is actually worse with Dom Tyson in it! Despite how many possessions he gets
That is a massive cop out for how poor Brayshaw and Viney were. Dom was rusty, but he was a huge part of why we won in the last. 32, 12 marks, 7 tackles and a goal.

Had a fair old case of the fumbles on the ground as well as not clunking them. Kicking was poor. Did contest though - which is better than having a strop and a sulk as he might have done last year. Strange to read he had 20 possies and 8 marks. Then again, most of the side had a lot of it and didn't do much with it.

Didn't look a finals side today. Could looking at a big loss next week.
I don't know how good Geelong really are right now. Didn't get out of second gear last week and barely scraped by today with Danger having to go nuts to save them.

Plus Max will eat Smith and Stanley for breakfast. Kreuzer had a damn good game today.

Also we kicked a few goals just from Hogans presence with 3 blues going up to spoil and our guys crumbing.

It seems that if you put to much emphasis on Hogan we hurt you in other ways and if your dont put enough he kicks a bag.

I thought his work up the ground was quite good at times. He was clean with disposal when we needed him to be.
