I'd be fine with that.

Something that doesn't rely on him being a human battering ram. We need to give him every chance to be successful in his final years. Full time midfield is definitely not doing him any favours

We don't need to do that at all. It's his job to earn his spot in the structure that we create thst maximises total team performance. Isn't that what we demand of junior players, earn your place in the team? Is it a different standard for senior players on their way down? We build a structure around them so they can meet the requirements that we set only for them?

We've also proven that we are the worst in the land at passing the torch on. Time and time again we get caught with our pants down by trying to get every last drop out of ageing stars.

Surely we have learnt that lesson now.

Your previous post contradicts this one. You stated that we need to give him every chance. Which is it, demand he performs or create a role to so it maximises his personal output. The old non-statistical role that only he can execute.

Protecting your team mate isn't in the playbook anymore. They are all taught to run for the next handball receive. Shepherding is definitely a thing of the past, even at SANFL level I've noticed this.

Richmond block, shepherd and create space for teammates. It's not a thing of the past, it's essential for success. As is numbers at the contest.

I am happy to have Brad gone, glad we didn't match and retain him as he is obviously not of the character we want, and am looking forward to having Hately in. A tall mid with a good engine. He has been in the system two years already and was already playing against men beforehand so should be ready to go. Instead of a Brad Crouch who is starting to get up in years and whose body is prone to injury we have a young man of seemingly good character as he was prefect at his College, whose family resides in SA, who wants to be at the Crows, who was s first round draft pick and who should serve the club well for the next 10 years.

he was assumed to be ready to go when drafted

I don't really care if a player wants to come here or not. If you don't want to come to Adelaide then don't put yourself in the PSD in the year when Adelaide have pick 1. If he's there, assuming we can afford his contract demands and we've already landed Hately, then I'd pick him.
And nicks would have worked with him last year and having hately here would be another face he already knows..you never know if it goes belly up with dodoro

He wouldn’t really be “putting himself there”. He’s uncontracted, has nominated a team and GWS are attempting to negotiate a trade with that team. If no trade is agreed to, he either has to re-sign with GWS or go in the draft.

Same thing happened last year with J Martin. A bunch of clubs passed on him for him to get to Carlton. It would likely happen again with Caldwell and Essendon this year if it came down to it, but North are the wildcard, not us.

In the real world, clubs don’t sign guys up for 600k per season on 5 year deals unless the player actually expresses some sort of interest in playing for them. It would be different if the player in the PSD wasn’t commanding a high salary.
Just on that. Martin put a front loaded 1 million dollar price on his head. Caldwell has been offered 450k for 4 years..that is a world of difference

I would like to see the club come out and say “we will keep a list spot open to see what falls out in the PSD” once Hateley is secured. Ratcheted up the heat on Geelong and Essendon

And if that doesn't work? Who's he pushing out in any case. Tex, Fog, KPF/backup ruck, young mid, Stengle, McAdam, Lynch. That's 7. Which of those plays SANFL to trial Sloane ahead of the ball? And that's ignoring fast, pressure forward. Obviously it's Lynch, but that's not happening, so which other?
Stengle doesn't play for the first month, perfect time to try it.

So if Sloane doesn't recover, it's not his fault, it's the coaches? Our highest paid player doesn't run his own race, he's more like Jenkins that relies on others to make him valuable?
If Sloane doesn't recover it's on Rory, nothing to do with the coaches.

Had beers with a GWS contact last night l, his info on Hately was:

- one of the most professional kids to have walked into the club, he said Hately is a ripper

- GWS offeres 3 years, told his Manager they would consider giving 4 years

- Sydney showed serious interest in Hately, as did Hawthorn and Port

- he us ready to go as a player and believes he can have a Taranto type of impact

That's what I believe Hately is. Top lad and player.

I think this is the biggest reason behind the Crouch decision. We've burnt ourselves with 5 year deals in recent times and we don't want to do that again with a guy who's been injured a lot in 8 years.

Forget all the conspiracy theories.
There is an issue with this strategy, we’ve gone too far the other way.

If you are an opposition club targeting one of our players what will you offer? A long term deal. Then when it comes to the trade, they know we won’t match so we will buckle. We’ve got a number of free agents coming up so watch this space.

Then if we continue to lose players 26 upwards to this strategy, what’s our list balance going to look like?

I think that's the case as well. Good move not handing out a 5 year deal in this case IMO, but we can't just stop giving them to people who deserve them.

The AFL media scum are trying to compound the Brouch farce by minimising our draft position.
Whereas, at the start, they suggested a mid-to-low second round should get the Hately deal done, now, although they acknowledge that we are in a good bargaining position, including the PSD threat, they then go on to suggest illogically that pick 23 is possibly the right price! :D
They never suggested pick 22 originally, so what gives?

This is a clear case of agenda pushing related to Crouch/Crows, and I'm not normally a conspiracy-minded person.
