He's actually a very smart man but the latest idea is just absurd.

And that's the frustrating thing - outside is the football media/publicity side of things, he's a very smart man as you said

The problem is that he seems to be trying to find ways to stay relevant and it's really not work

The Club Presidents have now voted unanimously for the Tassie team to go ahead. Apparently, the name "Tassie Devils" is copyrighted by Warner Bros for their cartoons. So that's going to be an interesting one to see how they get around that.
Surely we're calling the team Tasmania not "Tassie" even if it's known as the latter.

Also if an American company can prevent Tasmania from naming a sports team after their famous native animal that is only found there then the world is ****ed.

I believe Tasmanian Devil is also copyrighted to Warner Bros

Yes the world is a confounding.
Apparently no worries having an u18 side called it but the commercialisation of a million dollar entity that will cause a dispute ... they will want to sell Tshirts and scarfs and everything else. Personally I think a clean name is better anyway... just like the basketball side did it. It could be as offbeat as the Corsairs but after a while it just is . Really if we listed all the club mascots in order... how many are good and truly theirs alone. They have a unique opportunity.

Really Eddie... How about Collingwood is scheduled to play 11 games outside of Melbourne

Canberra Giants?

They are in real strife up there with the domination of the NRL sides in the Giants area. Maybe the afl should have picked an easier place to start like Canberra or Riverina ..where there was some afl interest.

The trouble is they hardly draw flies up there now.. 11 home game in sys and Canberra. ... sure that knocks the attendance down. What crowds can you get in Canberra 10,000. In way it would be better for them to sell all their home games to Vic clubs. Play games at Docklands, MCG, KP etc. It would give them more dollars and pay for themselves. Doesnt solve the underlying problem that even when they are a good side.... they struggle to gain interest. This side was ina GF not so long ago. It woudl be interesting to talk to X Giants players and compare their experience now playing for other clubs. Does anyone think Cameron regrets moving?

I agree with the thrust of the 20th side in WA or SA make more sense than the NT Dingos . 22 games in Canberra and GWSyd. not sure on that. Surely that would only make it more difficult to keep the likes of Bruhn...if they never come back to Vic.

If GWSyd is too hard because NRL is just so popular then move them to Canberra and play the odd game in the Riverina .. but I think they need to come to Vic at time sor it will never be functional.

Nah.

Keep GWS in GWS. They will get "there" in time.

It may take 50 years, but AFL can afford it. There is plenty of money out there.

Take over the nation.

Squash NRL this century.

Make the Australian game the Australian game!

It's not like the Swans were an overnight success, despite the razzle-dazzle of the Edelstein years. They had 20 hard years of struggle, coming close to being folded for financial problems at one point (IIRC). GWS has to be a long-term development project.

I wish they’ll just fold a few Victoria teams like the saints …they will never be successful and had to shut down a multi million dollar training facility just to return back to their original training facility

They brought on their own debt by making stupid stupid decisions

The AFL doesn't have the balls to fold or move a Victorian club anymore. But I think while they think there's money to be made, they'll eventually get to 20 teams. There is a danger that if some financial disaster besets Australia, that some clubs might have to be closed down.

If history counts for anything - then Tasmania should demand to play Geelong in their very 1st game

Ignoring GWS and Suns who were both hopeless when1st entering the comp - but most of the other expansion beat us in their 1st game against us

Even the Brisbane Bears ( 2nd game they played ) beat us at KP - we even lost to Freo at the WACCA - and from memory some of the others - if not most

If they have got a big mouth president - he should be saying - we want to play the Cats 1st up

IIRC, Freo had problems with Levi Strauss & Co over "Dockers," despite the fact that a longshoreman-based mascot has * all to do with pants.

It is the way of the world unfortunately, and naive of those who built the business case for the Tasmanian bid if they did not anticipate this action should they nominate that name.

Devils versus Demons? I'd like to see that!

They have to demonstrate a clear difference. It can't imply any resemblance or association to the copyrighted name.
I'd say if the AFL wanted to register a TM with the name "Tasmania Devils" with a distinctive logo or set of colours, that would be a sufficient distinction from the other trader. It would be clear that it refers to the football team. There may be issues around the use of a mascot on the other hand that is too similar to the Warner Bros character, especially if the name Tasmanian Devil was used?

Smallish vendors in the EU have held off McDonalds attempted trademark cases over starting things with "Mc" or using "Big Mac". I'm sure the AFL can hold off Bugs Bunny and the gang if they want to.
