Review Positives and Negatives vs Essendon

Looking forward to Nelson tearing him a new one in the derby :drunk::straining:
I concur. Was impressed by Nelson last night (given the limited D50 entries). If I'm Simmo I'm telling Nelson to wear him like a rubber. Walter's is literally the only reason why Freo are winning games.

Hutchings to stop old man Fyfe, Barrass to stop 'nose beers' hogan, Gov to do Gov things. Not sure who else kicks any scores for that team.

The boys came to play. The whole team showed up. The coaching!
Shuey got hammered all night - bodyline.
But you hold down one and there's Yeo, Sheed, Gaff, Redden and....Hickey.
Hutch's shutdown work is top shelf, makes up for his lesser skills. A sad Saad day.
Shep's shutdown on Fantasia was a masterclass. He was served humble pie and hung his head.
Schoey back to his best. Hurn smooth return, didn't miss a beat. Nelson like putty, plugged a gap.
Gov intimidating at times.
Gaff the eternal conduit and energiser bunny.
Sheed - we got a winner chicken dinner! The golden boot. Oh, and 36 touches, 14 contested, 81% efficiency, ran all day, 2 goals and 6 clearances! underrated by the opp, gone to another level at the right time.
Yeo -beast mode, tackle god (12), let everyone in the Don midfield know he's there, then does the rest.
Red Dog - a good 200th game with 13 score involvements.
Hicks - likes being the only ruck and stepped it up.
Flyin' - tries to do too much at times, but he'll work himself out, forced Mckenna to be accountable.
great defensive work by all our forwards!
Cameron - you know the rest, watch out Venables?
Cripps- underrated, improving at the right time..
Petch - good pressure work, needs to get his mind in synch with his legs? kicking practice.
Darling - Clutzy jack is back, well held, those kicks, got some serious attention like JK.
JK - Wow, that meat sandwich mark! Just willed himself into it. great effort for a sick man, sprayed shots forgiven!
Masten - anyone care to comment?
The team looks like it's readying for a shot at the finals, 6 pistons firing, 2 more to go!

Scoring isn’t a strong suit in Ross the Boss gameplan

Disagree he destroyed Saad. Kept him to 12 touches and almost no impact.

Yep. Confused by the "Hutch on the chopping block" comments. Hutch on Saad was a masterstroke and removed Essendon's biggest weapon against us: run off half back. Hell, it's everyone's biggest weapon against us.

I honestly thought Hutch was one of the best on ground and if he keeps it up, preventing that run through the guts off half back, it'll go a long way towards back to back.

Two things only:

Sheed- said it before but our best kick for goal - particularly in open play. Deadly.

Hutchings - can someone more knowledgeable than me tell me what his role is if he is not going a hard tag? Reckon there is only 4 or 5 teams that require a proper tag in the comp. Bombers are not one of those. Skills poor. Real momentum killer. Surely better options in the ressies?

Hutch stopped saad cold and should have 2 goals . Great game apart from his kicking for goal and that muffed kick to kennedy on his left

Too right. Which ones can we turn into mids?!
Cripps already getting up the ground a lot playing leccas old role .

Rioli is good at stoppages.

Petch got back in the defensive 50 a couple of times

Cameron with a couple of tackling efforts on the wing .

We have a pretty good midfield brigade and with our quick small forwards getting up the ground and back towards goal we are dangerous

They just need to apply manic pressure and tackling for ground balls and we will be very hard to beat

Think Ryan is in the same boat in that regards.

Once they both get a few more games under their belts , get some experience then I have absolutely no doubt that the composure will come and when it does .... both will be match winners and match up knighmares for opposing coaches .

The bloke in your account photo would have something to say about your BOG call

When Cripp's is pinging em from outside 50 he can run wherever he wants in my completely honest opinion

I can hear Pav’s wife furiously typing from here

They will be doing the calculation as to how best describe the incident so that he misses the Derby.

So :

Intentional.
High impact.
Late.
Maximum force.
Not I’m the spirit of the game.

Expecting all the above to be factored into a suspension that included the game against the Violet Crumbles.

Quite content, actually. The game plan the bombers like to employ is one we don’t really handle that well- that run and stun game off half back. We only need to look back to last year to see what they are capable of if left to play their style.

14.22. Yes, it “sucks” to only win by 3 goals 17, but Essendon are one of the stronger defensive sides around. To have 36 scoring shots is really impressive against such a good defensive side. I’ll take that over the 7.4 we dished up earlier this year, for sure!

Loved Cameron’s game, thought he was exceptional 1st up. Even though he’s slight, he’s not afraid to get amongst the tackling pressure. Got the reward with 2 goals but his pressure was just as important.

Sucks for Guelfi- unlucky he got injured. The furore of the taxi though is just crazy. It wasn’t an emergency- surely the ambulance is better served elsewhere??

Looking forward to watching the replay.

+ The main positive for me was McGovern and Kennedy playing their best games for the season. McGovern was an absolute brick wall and Kennedy was clunking his marks. Rest assured if the bearded Jesus starts getting eight pings at goals regularly then look out. Likewise if McGovern starts to own that space a kick behind play.
+ It's insane how little recognition Sheppard gets, should be an AA lock but wont even get spoken about
+ Oh my god we still have to fit NicNat, Barrass and Rioli into this team
+ Most of our players had good games, we are so lucky to have players like Schofield, Cameron and co at or about our best 22

- Goal scoring accuracy
- Darling is just not hitting his straps and we will need him to, quickly
- Bringing Masten in for predictably low output when we could have rewarded others in such a situation
- Basils commentary was a joke - managed to call Cameron, Jetta. This happened deep in our forward 50 so Jetta is at the other end of the ground, idiot
- MRP lotto on McGovern

Brought the game into disrepute and I expect him to get a 22 match suspension with 12 suspended

We look better when Hutch puts a tag on an outside player and let's the inside mids go head to head. Yeo and Shuey have lifted their defensive intensity if they're not winning the ball and it's putting us in good stead.

I'd send Hutch to B.Hill and give one of our forwards a tagging role on Luke Ryan. Cripps maybe?

Anyway, we can worry about all that after we smash the Hawks

Mastens Game was solid from where I watched barring one kick went out on the full . I was very comfortable with his game . He has skills far superior to Josh Smith whom I dont want to see in the side again .

Darling kinda still has an impact on games without kicking goals IMO. It's the age-old "he takes a defender away from Kennedy" discussion. It's usually one of the two having a good night depending on who the opposition deem more of a threat on the week.

I'm just waiting on what his wife says about it before i make my judgement..
In all my years of watching football, Pav's wifes comments last season were the nuffiest, most unwarranted comments I can remember reading.

Literally never heard a peep from her in all of Pav's playing career and then she decides to down a bottle of rosé and let her un-asked-for view be posted online.

As long as he’s chasing and tackling well in the process, then there’s no issue

We won't have equality until the number of women being nuffies online equals the number of men. We have a long way to go still ;)

Yep that’s pretty much spot on.

This year probably more so than in previous years, given we are so young up forward. It is a great motivator to our young forwards (who are in the side to pressure & harass) when they see the leaders do the extra work off the ball.

JK was the main target last night, but he doesn’t get 8 shots at goal without all the work JD does to block, guard space, unrewarded running.

He’s played much worse than last night and ended up with 3-4 goals. Tonight they just went other ways. But he’s such a vital part of our forward line, even with the stats say he was quiet.

Hutchings may indeed have his position questioned in the future but having him completely nullify a dangerous half back flanker cannot be underestimated. The modern game isn't just 'limit their star midfielder or gtfo' for taggers. Plenty of games (Eagles and otherwise) have been won by playing a defensive forward on an influential defender. If Hutchings can limit their impact while having a few score involvements himself that's a big win.

I'd suggest if an opposition team was to nullify Hurn we'd also struggle to win games.
