Review R18: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. St. Kilda

Good: Thilthorpe's return, even if only for a quarter, was exceptional. Bond's debut was very good. While Cook didn't get a huge amount of the ball, he did at least cover a fair bit more ground than usual, and his defensive stuff was solid (21 pressure acts, which is 11.5 above his average).

Bad: More Lairdball from Dowling. This really needs to be coached out of him. Cook committed the cardinal sin (handballing to a ruckman). His ball use is vastly superior in every aspect, he should never be giving it to O'Brien.

Ugly: The game in general.

Ben Keays is the season over/dud opposition specialist.

The media isn't calling for Curtin to come into the side, must be because they don't realise their voice at match committee is so strong.

As I said I pretty much agree with your points. This one is clearly not understanding the media and its role. Im telling you now in the 35 years Ive watched the Crows and AFL in general, the media is a vicious beast and often if the pressure is great enough results can happen.

Rucci himself brags about getting Primus sacked at Port as he credits his articles with getting the job done to remove a dud coach. The Crows admit to re-signing Nicks just before the season to stop the noise so Nicks doesnt get hurty feelings....sorry so the team isnt distracted from making the finals. Both decisions on the back of perceived media pressure. The crows have already responded to media pressure around selecting Thilthorpe as sub. So what on gods green earth do you think the media cant get a player in or out of a side? lol. Media pressure got Thilthorpe, Rachele and Curtin all selected. Being asked constant questions in press conferences about when a star draftee will get a debut puts pressure on the club to debut them as members, sponsors, the board etc all want to see the shiny new toy. Thats pressure.

This is how it works.
1. Media asks questions about Curtin
2. Club responds with no rush
3. Media again asks questions
4. Club responds
5. Media, members start asking questions
6. Board approaches Nicks and demands Curtin get a game.
7. Curtin plays gets subbed both games
8. media, members no longer ask questions.

Everyone got to see the shiny new toy. For what ever reason or conspiracy the toy didnt perform so everyone's lost interest for now. Dowling, Taylor, Bond all got games on the back of injuries so it was different circumstances so Im not claiming media pressure. Curtin was media pressure as Nicks kept getting hounded at every press conference.

Had nothing to do with Curtin getting 30 touches…

Rowey & Grey had Laird BOG this arvo.
"By the length of the Flemington straight" was the term used I believe 😬

Look I can't disagree that the media are part of the system, and you give good examples of signings that are, as you say, to 'stop distractions'.

But I'll throw back the example of Crouch, where the media make it their mission to ask about him to every player and coach last year.

I thought the coaches resisted without too much care for this 'outside noise', and Crouch only found his way back in when Laird was injured - not on the back of the media pressure.

There is a big difference between a long time listed player and a shiny new toy. The shiny new toy attracts the excitement. We were losing which for better or worse the media, members and supporters wanted to see some change with selection. Curtin represented that change. Hence the pressure to poke the stick and suggest the selection committee do something different. Thats what I mean by pressure. Last year when Crouch wasnt in, we were at least winning 50% of the time which gave Nicks the cushion.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned that dangerous tackle call on cook... He slung the player but he's head was nowhere near the ground... Am i the only one that think that was a totally bs call?
Haven't checked it on the replay, but when I saw it I thought Cook showed duty of care and stopped the head hitting the ground.

Would have been unlucky to get suspended laying his first tackle of the season!

Keays has been one of our more consistent performers this year. He's actually deserved his spot in the team.
I agree, don't get the hate.

Has limitations, busts his gut week in week out. Puts up enough good games to warrant selection
