Francis - it won’t rate a mention in most circles but the way he hits the pack just dissipates the energy of opposition momentum. He will play better games but he is already such an important player.
.

At least twice Francis hit the contest with real malice, he used his body weight really well to hit the pack without breaking any rules. the second one looked like he really wanted to hurt the Melbourne player but it was clear he was going for the ball.

Congrats, looks like our season is over before yours.
Sometimes you need to sit back and just enjoy the sport over the game, some of the Essendon Melbourne games over the years have been ****ing shit to watch.
This one was a good game of footy, Bombers kicked some ripping goals.
Like I reckon most neutrals must of loved that game.

Still im shattered so Ill leave yas to it.

P.S umpiring was shithouse, kinda felt like you guys had the rub but you were better for 3 of the 4 quarters anyway so the right team won. Was probably a 5 goal game.

If Hooker is fit he plays. Will not play VFL. If there is one player who plays with his heart on the sleeve, it’s Chooker.

Probably but that says more about our selection process than his readiness. Also I don’t doubt his heart I doubt the run in his legs.

The Dees were better tonight and has a good list that is just a little down on form.

Wayne Carey should never commentate another game. He wasn't even calling the game, he was just barracking over a microphone. Kept calling Essendon free kicks soft and whinging about bad bounces when they went Essendon's way. Almost as bad as Gary Lyon calling our games. Funny thing is both are shit blokes and root their mate's Mrs'.

Make no mistake gentlemen...the only win tonight was a win in finally getting back the relentless grind that’s required to beat a half decent opposition side.

There were good signs.

It was that Geelong game from last year all over again. The aggressive response we were all demanding happened right from the start thank ####.

Dees played pretty good football tonight. Us and them like to play on with a handpass and move it at high speed.

Hence why both teams were completely exhausted by halftime and the second half became a war of attrition.

Anyway...regardless of Melb’s ordinary backline, we banged on a load of goals that all came from hard work up the ground with great attack on the ball etc etc.

Couple of positives worth mentioning...

The kind of captains game Leongatha boy needed to pull out. Good stuff.

Francis is a genuine hard nut. Shows great courage. Will just get better and better.

Saad played his best EFC game tonight. He is a very smart and fast workhorse. He’s a great recruit.

Smith leads and sets the tone for this team now. He’s a little gut running machine and is always in the play. He’s a great recruit.

Stringer is way fitter than this time last year and that’s helping his 4 qrt efforts. He’s a great recruit.

Parish is a real worker. Genuine gutsy young player. I’d have that over Myers lumbering around at the tail end of an injury effected, mediocre career.

And the whole team played well blah blah ...except for a few glaring problems that are still quite evident.

Such as...

Clarke is so far off having any semblance of pro AFL skills it’s just not funny. He’s an absolute shocker and way out of his shallow depth.

Shiel really worries me with his distinct lack of hardness with head over ball. Watch him closely and he crumbles under pressure getting held and jostled in packs. Even faked a body sling at one stage in the guts, flinging himself back when he should’ve kept going at the ball.
Another things that’s giving me the mild shits is how he likes to dish off a handpass ar lot of the time when he is challenged or charged at with ball in hand. He doesn’t like to take a hit. But apart from that he went alright tonight.

Bellchambers actually laid a hard tackle in the backline at one stage! Cant remember the last time I saw him lay a good tackle.
But apart from that miraculous moment...he was incredibly underwhelming once again. Take a mark around the ground ffs Tom.

The form tonight means nothing if they don’t bring the intensity next week against a rampaging, attacking Lions side.

But after watching the two of the worst Essendon games in 40 years, tonight’s win was fun to watch footy again.

We did have the rub of the green which is rare. In the end, the third term was the difference. It's usually Melbourne smashing us in the third.
I think you'll beat Sydney next week. No need to worry about speed with them, especially on a small ground.

Normally I hate commenting on umpires because every free against you feels like bullshit but people never complain when they go the other way. I mean realistically it was probably like ~5 decisions that went your way but it always feels worse. Like I said though I dont blame umpires for results, you guys had 8 more scoring shots, could have been much worse for us.

We havent beaten Sydney for like 9 years, im not gonna be surprised if we start this year 0-6 or worse. We are ****ing miles off where we need to be.

Pleased someone else saw that with Shiel, a few of his turnovers came when he seems to rush thinking he was about to be tackled or hit, maybe its a defensive measure for his shoulder or maybe he is still a bit jumpy being at a new club but tonight was the best he has played with a couple of his trademark centre breaks.

Melbourne kicked 18.4 tonight. Ridiculously accurate. We were 20.10 which is pretty decent as well. So 22 scoring shots to 30.

It was very weird umpiring all game. No one in our thread could make head or tail of it, and the commentary didn't seem to know which way was up either. The interpretations seem inconsistent and out of sync with common sense.

A much better effort. Shootout games are way better than snoozefest defence first type games.

I still think T-Bell is too slow and a liability around the ground. Did SFA when at FF couldn't even jump.

To survive after losing Kobe early and Champagne Ham #5 for 20 minutes was very commendable.

Myers can stay out please.

Still think Bags and Ambrose surplus to requirements.

Would love to see Mozzy get a run soon and Redman when he's 100%. Both have speed and great evasive skills and agility.

Lions cubs are super quick all over the ground and are dangerous.

A chance to FINALLY enjoy a weekend!

Think it's more quick ball movement with them. There's really only half a dozen genuinely quick players (Witherden, Bailey, Zorko, McCarthy, Rayner and Cameron) so a good zone will be vital.

Yeah the could have paid 20 less free kicks for little insignificant shit and no one would have cared.

Frost got pinged for holding Mckernan in the square when he literally didnt hold him for a second, then another time we got a free out of the square and from the kick a holding free deep for barely an arm even touching.

Just let them win the contests on their merits for **** sake.

Loving all the opposition supporters saying that we're scum and the umpires are in our pockets.

Clearly didn't watch the game too closely! We had some dubious calls our way but bugger me there were some howlers against us too

Yeah well whatever it is I think it’s ingrained in him and he’s still gliding around like he did at the Giants and doesn’t plough in head first to win the hard ball on the ground.
But if he makes up for this weakness with gut running receiver ball carry play topped off with A grade foot skills into the F50..I’d could live with that.

The Stringer free was one of the softest frees.

One of most over umpired games you’ll ever see I think tonight.

Absolutely ridiculous wrong decisions made over and over again.

Idiots.

Umpiring was shocking both ways.

They picked out plenty of very soft technically there but gee, than they missed some obvious ones, again both sides, Tippa being caught. Fantasia in the 4th or 3rd, caught someone absolutely cold, both not paid.

Cameron, Bailey, McCarthy, Rayner, Witherden, Neale, Berry, Lyons, McCarthy, Zorko and the Suitcase (McCluggage) I'd say are quick.

Could be another shootout and exciting to watch though!
