Autopsy Round 1, 2023: Positives and Negatives vs North Melbourne

Clutching at straws to find any positives from that game.
This argument that we did well to fight back from 6 goals down is bizarre to me, that is loser mentality I’m sorry. You could maybe say that if we were playing a high quality opponent but this was against North.
We were almost at full strength yesterday…nobody put any physical pressure on Sheezel. He’d be sitting back laughing last night about how easy we made it for him.
We are in absolute disarray as a club, a complete laughing stock. What will they produce next Sunday? God help us if we lose that. How does 0-8 sound?
Odd argument, what's the alternative to fighting back?- rolling over and giving up against a bottom side?
Nothing 'loser mentality' about seeing some good signs in the team? Loser mentality is melting about everything including the positives. Also North have clearly improved under Clarko as you would expect. Need to accept the reality of our situation, dummy-spitting goes nowhere. We are no longer who we were as a full strength team, transitioning through players and adapting to a new game plan. Maybe it will come together and stand up, maybe it won't? Maybe the coach will stick around longer, maybe he won't. Regardless there are changes ahead. We are a bottom side until we're not.

Geez the media didnt take long to sink the boot in. They likely pre wrote the agenda before the season start3d.

I did agree with a comment from King. Simpson is finding out which players will take the club forward and which players won't.

Some are aging champions, some arent.

Its a serious dissadvantage having no WAFL games atm.

Part of the reactions to the ruck situation has to be how fortunate we’ve been to enjoy Cox and now Naitanui for the past two decades.

We’re now in a situation where we’re relying on developing talents and we’re not used to it.

Williams has produced some good games but is prone to shocking moments. Jamieson is largely untested, even yesterday he was barely thrown on ball. Barnett seems the best prospect of the three but we’ll obviously have to be more patient than we are used to.

I am actually surprised at how much scorn is being put on BBW.

I thought he played a big part in us making both our catch up runs in the third and fourth.

Had an awful couple of moments at the end but the htb was hardly his fault imo.

It has to be hard work when your mids are all going at half rat power for huge portions of the game when you are still working out how to do your job at the level.

We have to hope he comes good because he's our Johnny on the spot.

Seems like the game plan is to win a tackle stat rather than get 1st hands on ball.

Nothing has changed in that respect, just let the opposition get 1st hands on ball.
But rather than corral, emphasis is on tackling...

There might as well be 17 teams in the AFL because we have become insignificant.

Butt of jokes, ridiculed and same old displays on field.

If we are winless by round 7 or 8 I can't see the board sticking with Simmo.

Yeah but the fans will not

We demand success as west coast supporters and if we do not see we will be annoyed. Its good and its bad

Once the losses start to mount which they will really think the supporters/fanbase will not have the patience to see it through and Simpson will get the sack.

The frustration with supporters is pretty high atm can only see it getting worse.

Hello lads!

Been overseas for the majority of the off-season and won't be returning to Oz til Round 4, so I've been relying on the training watchers and game day thread to keep me informed.

I must say that after a hopeful preseason it sounds like everything returned to business as usual come Round 1 - smashed in the clearances (we still choosing to play a man down at stoppages?), the old guard not showing effective on field leadership again, the kids showing them how to football, and the game plan that we have supposedly been working on to turn the club around not really being sighted. That about right?

On a more positive note it sounds like we might have found a player in Ginbey. Hopefully we don't feck it all up and turn him into HBF #277.

For those who saw the game - where would you say improvement is going to come from this year? How does the team win a game?

+ Intention to go aggressive was evident, bursts of handball and carry, Darling consistently aggressive kicking inboard whenever he took a mark further up the ground. Reverted too safe too often, but there’s something there if they actually commit to it.

I thought Darling took the aggressive and quick option all game. Also had a number of quick handballs inboard which showed his intent. Good stuff and just need everybody onboard with the plan.

Serious over reaction, but I guess that is to be expected from you.
We have played one game, no one knows how good North will be this year. They have some very good young players due to their stint at the bottom over the past few years, now they have an experienced, proven coach to get them playing together.
Butt of jokes? Harden up who fricken cares?
We know we are rebuilding, loosen up and enjoy the ride.

Glad you weren't commanding anything in WW2!

Finding out which players want to take us forward and which won’t, and also which coach. Diabolical yesterday allowing the second quarter flogging (seen that before), not coming up with an idea to win clearances when they had no ruck, no change ups, no ball movement, persisting with sheed as the go to for tap work. All he can come up with is the players are rusty. Pretty sure every club just had 6 months off

Exactly, it what's this years about, people need to think of the children!

TBF BW had the easiest possible task he is likely to ever have in the AFL , win a decent number of ruck contests against last year's wooden spooners who didn't have an actual ruckman for the best part of 3 quarters. At some stage they thought Sheed might do a better job at CBDs. He failed miserably so I think the scorn is justified based on yesterday's game.

It was as good statement but if Simpson hasn’t seen over the past two years which players will or won’t take us forward then what’s he been doing the last couple of years? It isn’t that hard to have figured out and maybe he has been hamstrung by someone in list management signing up some spuds to multi year deals which continued with Jamo getting another 3 bloody years with not much body of work behind him to earn it.

Good quality melts here.

We had 3 teenage debutants playing an away game against a team playing pretty good footy, with a new coach.

Personally, this year I'll be watching for the kids.
Exactly. Some serious sooking here. There were positives to take from the game and negatives. I thought we would win but North are much improved and their tackling pressure was impressive yesterday so credit where it's due.
I think you are like me, in the 5 th stage of grief, while some of the Melting Moments in here still haven't gone past the second stage- anger. No point being in that stage for too long if you are going to persist watching, it's not very pleasant.

To be fair, Bailey probabaly needed a rest being the solo ruck at that stage. However, the fact that there was such little demonstrated value in winning the ruck tap that we opted for the extra run of a midfielder rather than a tall, is pretty damning.

Nah, signing Jamo was a good decision. We need depth at ruck, otherwise we'll have a ruck division consisting of just Barnett from next year onwards. He's a super cheap signing, and can be used as maturish depth. TBH, I think he's more of a Westhoff type than a ruckman (i.e. a tall utility).

Unfortunaytely we gave up early and had to fight back. Out best yesterday for 4 quarters would have won. There were some good signs of intent but under pressure some withdrew into their shell. The reality is we have to play players to see who is part of the future - that includes 19 year olds and others such as XON etc. The result is there will be some poor/unpredictable performances.

so whens Nic available?

Even 30% fit just take the bounces and head off

There was a Paul Curtis goal from a stoppage in the pocket where Sheed was more concerned with being defensive of his man rather than coming off him to pressure the ball carrier. It's an element that isn't reflected on the stats sheet, but with Nic, the opposition cannot afford to be as attacking and we don't get stuck in a defensive mindset. Times this by X amount of stoppages and it's a big difference.

Enough of the “lost to the wooden spooners”!! This is a new season and we shouldn’t be judging teams on last year.If everyone expects us to be much better surely North supporters expect their team to be much better.New coach and a lot of high end talent.
Enjoy the ride, look for positives in the newbies, and hope like hell Simmo maintains the rage. Play all the kids and get rid of the 50-50 players who never have/never will make it.Don’t be afraid to change things around.
-I.E. Gov would have smashed it in the ruck in that last quarter!!
