Autopsy Round 1, 2023: Positives and Negatives vs North Melbourne

Odd argument, what's the alternative to fighting back?- rolling over and giving up against a bottom side?
Nothing 'loser mentality' about seeing some good signs in the team? Loser mentality is melting about everything including the positives. Also North have clearly improved under Clarko as you would expect. Need to accept the reality of our situation, dummy-spitting goes nowhere. We are no longer who we were as a full strength team, transitioning through players and adapting to a new game plan. Maybe it will come together and stand up, maybe it won't? Maybe the coach will stick around longer, maybe he won't. Regardless there are changes ahead. We are a bottom side until we're not.
Praising the team for fighting back and still losing is a loser mentality. The bare minimum requirement is for the team to “fight” from first minute to last.
Does it make it better or worse if we were up by 5 goals yesterday and got run down and lost? As I said if that’s considered a positive we’re really clutching at straws.

Displaying a never give up attitude won us a flag five years ago.

We lost that attitude for 90% of last season.

Getting that back is a bare minimum. And an improvement from last year.......so far!

What was the point of the medicos trying to watch the replay in regards to McGovern's injury? They couldn’t just asked him to point to where it hurt and how much? She legit looked like my mother in law trying to work out Netflix on an iPad before calling up one of her grandchildren to ask for help.

We're a losing team, have been for a season or more, where have you been?
As a transitioning team it's not like we're going to suddenly start winning every game, it's a slow rebuild and you have to take the positive increments as they come.
Yes, the team must fight from the 1st minute to the last, absolutely, but nothing's perfect and even top teams get rolled over if they drop intensity or focus.
Whether it's the coaches fault, teams fault, both, whatever, we're in for a long haul.
At this stage we're a bottom team, if you can't handle that, or the small positives, it will be a long painful season for you...

We have had the same basic issues for many years now. Can't win ground balls or contested possessions. Can't tackle effectively. Can't apply a sufficient level of overall defensive intensity and pressure (Not even for short periods). And we have not many any progress at all in getting any better at any of these things for many years. What other conclusion can you draw other than that the current people in charge have no answers and no ideas how to make progress in these areas?

I am not sure if Simpson is in denial by resurrecting the "Synergy" excuse at the presser yesterday or if he is just throwing whatever he can at the wall and seeing if it sticks. Although now the lack of "synergy" now is not because of Covid and injuries (as it was supposedly last year) but now it is because some players didn't play much last year. He needs to acknowledge how bad we are in the areas mentioned and accept personal responsibility as senior coach for generating improvement. The crap he throws out there like the "Synergy" excuse is, to paraphrase, just saying that it is all due to factors outside his control and there is nothing he can do about it. That is effectively what he is and has been saying at his pressers in delicate language. Thats how he processes it mentally. It's not my fault and there is nothing i can do about it is the subtext of his pressers and what is going on in his head. He needs to accept responsibility for generating improvement.

Even wiping away any culpability he has for bad decisions past and how we got to the place we are now, if you just pretend that this is the first time you have ever seen or heard Adam Simpson and you know nothing else about him but are just judging him on what he says when he speaks and does pressers, he does not look and sound like somebody who has any idea how to take the club forward. He looks tired, exasperated, annoyed at having to deal with the media, out of ideas and like he doesn't even really want to be there.

Patience Mosquito. We are not going to go from zero to hero in a day.

The phrase "fighting back" is often used as a broad and vague term that doesn't provide much clarity on what actions are being taken. It can encompass a wide range of behaviors and strategies, which makes it a generic catch-all term.

To truly understand the reasons for our floundering, we need to examine our adherence to fundamental principles and tactics. We fell behind because we failed to consistently apply these, and we only saw improvement when players stepped up and became more compliant.

Given that we are currently in a rebuilding phase, it is commendable that they were able to step up and see reward for their actions. However, moving forward, the challenge for the team will be to ensure that compliance becomes a more consistent and integral part of our approach.

The idea that winning or losing is a binary, black and white mentality is simplistic. It's important to recognise that a team's improvement is a result of a multitude of factors that occur at the micro-level, and that these individual actions combine to produce macro-level results.

Teams evolve and mature through a series of ongoing, incremental improvements that are often not immediately apparent. These improvements can come from a variety of sources, including adjustments to strategy and tactics, increased communication and collaboration, individual skill development, and more. It's the accumulation of these smaller actions and changes that ultimately lead to larger-scale improvements in performance and results.

A successful team is one that is constantly striving to identify and implement these micro-level improvements. By focusing on continuous growth and development, rather than just the outcome of individual games or competitions, teams can establish a winning culture that is sustainable over the long term.

Bottom 6 expectations this year so going down by under a kick on the road isn’t the end of the world. 2nd quarter was a worry but to be able to turn it around from 40 points down and nearly take it out was a relief.

I have no idea why we didn’t sit someone spare on the defensive side of each stoppage when Norf committed an extra player there. They just ran the ball out too easy in that 2nd quarter with their +1 and blew us away.

  • Jones has become a solid b22 player now and I’m sure he’ll be getting some serious midfield minutes soon
  • Ginbey, Long looking right at home on debut
  • Allen being a threat up forward after a year out
  • Shuey, Sheed, McGovern, Darling, Hurn, Gaff, Hunt and Ryan all had decent games

  • Williams and Jamieson did more damage than good
  • Kelly had a stinker
  • Chesser invisible
  • First couple of goals for Norf from dodgy frees. Hurn bodies up without using his arms and Larkey dives for the first one. Some other muppet pushes 2 of our defenders into each other with the ball nowhere near and called play on for another goal.
  • Not 15 after Ryan hit a target i50, kicking in danger call after Petrucelle kicked a goal. The umps fisted us.

Hoping to see games pumped into Hewett, Hough, Bazzo, Culley along with Chesser, Long and Ginbey this year. At this stage there’s no reason not to select them if they’re fit because honestly they’re atleast as good as our more senior players and have higher ceilings.

We still have issues with really stopping and arresting momentum back from sides when they got a run on. North should have blown us away when they were hot for a quarter and a half.

Someone yesterday said that Ginbey was lead to the ball but due to his athletism was able to close the gap and blunt the opposition.

Is he able to hunt the ball on his own merits?

One game I know but it's not a bad thing if he's a defensive midfielder and then Hewitt an offensive one.

Negative: judging by Hawthorn's efforts today, we aren't s**t enough to get Harley Reid.

Judging by the Hawks recent list management Reid has been their goal for a couple of off seasons.

They were looking for a knock to the head as part of the concussion test.

Take a look at the intensity at the contest/second effort from TK here within the first 40 seconds of the game. How can we possibly compete with young teams with players wanting to win when this is the level of effort applied from one of our highest paid players?
...and the worse bit is, we have him until the end of the 2025 season.

A spell in the twos may be the kick up the arse he needs

TK has a huge amount of talent and x-factor but it often feels like he can switch it off and on when he feels like it/feels the responsibility to do so.
His game vs St Kilda in 2020 when most of other mids were injured showed how good he can be as a primary mid.
There's been several other incredible efforts from him as well, so it's confusing why he doesn't bring this each week when the ability is there.
