Autopsy Round 13 = Melbourne 66-62 Collingwood

Melbourne dominated that game for all but the first 10 minutes of the first quarter. They played great and beat us at our own game

AJ kicked 2 against Geelong in the qualifying final. Chill.
2 goals in 3 finals, including only 2 touches in the PF, yeah he's a big game player alright

Nothing to see here. Can't win them all and I don't want to go 22-1 in the home and away then fall flat in finals. We need to finish Top 2 and cop a few losses along the way. This was one of them. Melbourne set themselves for this, it was clear, they were desperate all day and didn't let up. Congrats to them. Can they do it again later on when it matters? Time will tell.

We were due for a loss. Looked tired after 11-1. Missing key ball carriers like JDG & Sidey, no Elliott inside 50. The ball also barracked for Melbourne today, that thing just would not bounce our way all day. First game back for Lipinski too who was pretty damn good tbh & Pendles can't play any worse than that!! The forwards were way down mainly because the supply was poor today, it will improve. The Dees were also overdue to win one of these games so write it off and move on, means nothing in the long run.

Anyone actually know how bad Elliott's shoulder is, and if he'll be OK after the bye?

Hoskin-Elliot cost you, Cox should’ve been at FF last 10 mins
Cox was also our best ruck option though. Would have been one hell of a roll of the dice, but perhaps Frampton was an option for one of those roles.

Against teams like Melb who don’t have 2x big forwards I’d have tried Frampton in the ruck with Cox. Our forward line couldn’t halve a marking contest today.

Mihocek playing behind all day, AJ dropping basic marks or being nowhere near the ball. McStay straight in after the bye. Elliott would have helped.

Haven’t seen us lose stoppages that easily this year. Last year every week. Not just clearances but Melb ran it out to advantage so often.

Lipinski OK first game back. I like HH, hands were clean, showed poise, I think he could be very good. Markov OK when he came on

Credit to Melbourne, apart from terrible goal kicking they totally outplayed us.

Missed having Sidebottom and a fit J Daicos today for those hard running D50 exit links. WHE was in and out but not great. JDG is usually good for a few of those too, so he was a big loss in more ways than the obvious centre shambkes

Would’ve liked to have seen ND and Crisp go in to centre bounces earlier. Pendles was off today and our centre clearances really weren’t working most of the game.

We definitely didn’t deserve to steal that one, even though I was hoping we would!

They kept it in tight and we couldn't get it out into space, which is needed against them.

Very good loss to have, but top 4 is not assured at all, there are plenty of loseable games coming up.

It did bring clarity around Ash Johnson, not sure if he was injured or not, but McStay comes in now for him, Checkers was just too outnumbered too often.

Thought Crisp was lion hearted, Quaynor and Moore played well, and Mitchell and Adams were competitive. Otherwise, we didn't have many winners.

Bris at the Gabba and Melb missing Degoey, sidey, howe, Elliot, mcstay, ginni.

Plus it’s bloody obvious the flu cooked a few. Melb is will never get us as vulnerable as we were today
They suggested at the end of the telecast that Ginni was dropped, so can't really include him.

Would’ve been nice to win but we all expected a “loss we had to have” and why not against a side that on paper has a graders everywhere. Sidebottom, JGD big outs for us and really missed Billies forward pressure.
Kruger looks good to come as a tall
option forward.
Congrats to Melbourne but they look like a team of individuals. Broady starting game on the bench, ouch!
Break comes a a good time.

Not sure why players elect to play if they are not 100% well. They do the team and themselves a disservice. Rule yourself out and let other players come in who can put in 100%

Well there’s two ways of looking at this game.Glass half empty.Melbourne were much the better side and should have won by more,Glass half full.We played terribly ,had a lot of classy players out,the team looked tired and lethargic, and yet we almost pinched it in the end.

I prefer the latter take on the game.I think just about everything that could have gone wrong in that game did go wrong, and yet we almost won it in the end.I think the loss of players like Degoey,Sidebottom, and Elliott really killed us in the end.You can’t miss quality players like that and not be affected by it.

I also think we need Mcstay to come into the team asap.Even though he’s no superstar,he would have at least provided some aerial contest today. Our forwards didn’t do that at all today, and Johnson was so bad he had to be subbed off before three quarter time.

Lack of composure was the thing that stood out today. It was uncharacteristic of this side, and was what killed us in the end. Hopefully the boys can freshen up over the break and attack the second half of the season with the same sort of footy that’s got us atop the ladder to this point.

Just one of those days, can’t win them all.
Looked off from halfway through the first.

Lots of talk about selection headaches coming up; A few players have made it easier on the committee based on today.

They certainly set themselves for this one.
Did a lot of research on our players and how to stop them. Would have involved a lot of VFL footage.
Much harder task come the return of four or five of our best.
Four or five…. About 20 odd percent of a team on the ground.
Never happy to lose, but as I stated in the pre match thread, not stressed about going down in this one.
Had they have kicked straight though it’s an almost 10 goal win to them. And that’s an issue stars out or not.

Here's one for all you conspiracy theorists out there. I love one myself.

We delberately lost this game because we want the Dees to finish inside the Top 4 to try to keep out other teams that we may or may not want to be there. I can think of a couple of teams that trouble us who we would probably like to see take the long road home. I don't think the Dees hold any problems for us as long as we have a full team available.

Melbourne deserved the win and beat us in most contests after quarter time. Actually a great sign we were a kick away after lacking spark for a lot of the game.
