Up the Coasters Round 21- Positives and more positives v Essendon

That one hurts more than any other loss this year. The local pub actually had a rowdy atmosphere for a West Coast game.
Maric is a big upgrade on Waterman. Hopefully him and Jack Williams each have a strong pre season.
Hewett is establishing himself as the best of our young mids.
Gov, Yeo, and Cripps are showing why their experience will be useful to lead the young group.

The one big negative was the hit out count. 52 - 13. I wasn't impressed by Williams at the start of the year but he has gotten better as the year progressed. That being said, your number 1 ruck can't lose hit outs by this kind of margin. It might be OK for your back up ruck to lose hit outs by a margin like that provided he can provide enough of a contest to prevent the other ruckman from being able to hit to advantage too much. But your number 1 ruck (and intended future number 1 ruck) needs to be more competitive than this.

My greatest concern was being tired after the win last week and the Bombers running away with it.
So good to see a good start and a good consistent effort through the game.
Lots the kids and club will take away from that one.

One number one draft pick has won a premiership medallion in twenty years.
And part of the reason for that might be that the Number 1 pick is going to the wooden spoon club at the bottom of the premiership cycle and a long way away from their next flag.

What is your point? Are you saying pick 1 is no more valuable than pick 10?

I’m saying this obsessive view that number will be so much better for us isn’t borne out by the evidence. 20 years is enough time.

Luke Edwards definitely showed for a much longer period why he should be kept going forward .. 20 disposals 95% efficiency is elite.. yes he had one brain fade but that’s it..

Hewitt stands out in everything he does and I can remember the last time we had a midfielder that actually can go forward and impact the scoreboard.. going to be fun watching him in 2-3 seasons time.

Maric and jack williams showed they are up to it. Jack just needs to attack the ball but that will come.

If we follow your logic then should we identify which number in the draft has produced the most number of premiership players in the last 20 years and try and trade for that number pick? So like if the number 8 draft pick has 3 players who played in a premiership in the last 20 years years should we trade the Number 1 or 2 pick this year (whichever we end up with) for Pick 8?

Anyone sooking because I cheered when Langford got that goal leading to an uninspiring Bombers win can eat one of these

I didn't sit through the last 3 years of eagles poor performance in an absurdly bad period, only to throw away the draft compensation we are entitled to, which includes selecting a marquee player to be the face of our club going forward.... all for a nothing win to finish the the worst season in our history.

Grow up.

It's more than just Pick 1.

The first round is massively compromised with 3 Academy boys to GC, two father & sons and the tin rattlers begging for Sanders. That's not even taking into account the AFL'S secret herbs and spices and whether it amounts to a pick for North directly after their first for McKay.

Finish last and we get to avoid all of this mess and hold our future in our hands. First pick of the night and if we take Reid then we get the most coveted kid in the draft for finishing last. Something that hasn't happened for years (Ugle-Hagan, Daicos, Ashcroft). If we trade him then it will be for a kings ransom which will also further help our side shoot back up the ladder faster.

Not to mention potentially the coveted first pick of the second night of the draft that may net us two second rounders for the price of one.

Pick 1 gives us options that are uncompromised, unrestricted and with a club like West Coast i'd back us to make smart decisions unlike some of the basket cases that continually find themselves in a perpetual state at the bottom of the ladder taking pick 1 over and over and over.

I prefer our fate in our own hands thanks very much.

Or we could keep comparing Reid to the generational number 3 draft pick, who we already use as the benchmark. My point is simply that there is nothing particularly magical in 1 over several of the high picks in drafts.

When we beat freo next week, today's loss would have been for nothing....

Thank you! Anyone wanting to win a dead rubber in round 21 to have your third win (two by less than a kick), in a year where you have lost four games by 100+ points and had the worst season in your club's history, when there is a generational talent available either for us to draft or trade for multiple talents and players, when you are rebuilding and the draft will be compromised in a few years by Tassie, is naive and shortsighted. It's not a sprint, finishing second last this year would set us back more than finishing last.

If we won it wouldn't be the worst season in our history.

Supporters wanting to retain access to the likely best young player in Australia have a perfectly valid point if that is their preference over a close win in a dead rubber. Doesn't make them any less of a supporter.
Because some supporters understand the significant long term benefit that is within reach, be it Harley Reid or a kings ransom for pick 1.

Starting to wonder if we'll need English, BW's just getting better and better, his 2nd efforts are putting some of our small mids to shame!
Don’t wonder. English would be a dumb dumb recruiting decision. Put those resources into younger players in positions of need

English is going to be the AA ruckman... ergo the best ruck in the AFL this year.

He also costs nothing, other than salary, which we're currently flushing down the toilet on senior players that suck or are injured (Shuey, Gaff, Naitanui) anyway.

Bailey, has improved beyond belief... yet is still 3 rungs below English. Thats not even a question.

He just had 12 hitouts for a whole game FFS. Even the Bombers dopey rookie ruck Nick Bryan beat him with 19. That's on top of Phillips 33. Absolute pantsing.

If Williams can't get the best of these 2 spuds, we should surely look to upgrade to someone who can, if the opportunity presents itself.
