top 4 a real possibility...

Dramoth if we play with the heart we did on friday night top 4 is a big shot. Marc Murphy was actually putting on some defensive pressure, which is great because i believe he is one hell of a one sided player, and our other onballers smashed them too, it was marvelous to be there to watch how good our pressure was.

Who do the Doggies and the Lions play? We would be in 5th if the bummers could have held on.

Port over in port are a different team tho and if we got over them then its getting real tight for top 4.

Thankyou for bringing a new fresh attitude to the new BigFooty week nosaints4flag :thumbsu:
Last week we were 9th werent we?
Weekends are wonderful things.

I really like the clubs attitude on where where we are at. It's a cliche' but we are playing one week at a time, which is great as we really got ahead of ourselves early in the year.

There is really no point speculating on where we will finish, let's let it unfold week by week focusing on the upcoming game.

This is a big game and make no mistake if we need to win this game to prove our standing as a team that is going to compete in the finals (not just a making up the numbers team).

If we win our next 2 (good possibility), and the Bulldogs drop 1 game in the next 2 weeks (good possibility) then the winner of the Crows v Blues match could move into 4th spot which would make it huge. Whether or not that team stayed there would depend on the results of the games on Sunday.

Going in to Round 22, I think the situation will still be we can finish as high as 4th, or as low as 7th.

Here you are... buy yourself a backbone and stop being so damned pessimistic about our chances...

repeat after me... we will make the top 4... we will finish off the season with a massive bang instead of the whimper that we were starting to get so used to...

Well to be fair to me, I reckon the Bulldogs and Brisbane appear to be in a 'stronger' position to make the 4th position, with only 3 rounds to go, although they play each other this w/end ...

I'm just delighted we're going to make the finals for the first time since 2001, I am more hopeful of a top 4 finish next year, when Waite returns and Walker and Warnock hopefully play full and un-interrupted seasons.

I just done a ladder predictor and the Prelim finals came out as:

Saints v Geelong
Collingwood v Carlton

While I took the most optimistic approach to our chances, that would create one of the most exciting weeks of footy for a long time.

This obviously requires the Blues to finish in 4th position, and the Pies to upset the Cats week 1 of finals. Both possibilities are actually not that far fetched, however all will become clear in a few weeks time.

I would like to point out that with so few 'interstate clubs' in the finals this year, it is still a very strong possibility or chance that we could make a prelim final from 5th or 6th positions, so it's not the end of the world if we can't make the top 4.

Same here.

Dogs to lose at least 2/3 games (Lions - Gabba, Cats, Pies).
Lions to lose to Swans in round 22.
We win all three......this is the toughy with Port and the Crows.
Finish 4th. :eek::thumbsu:

looking very likely if cats get over dogs next week
our chance is goneeeee if dogs win cant see us making up 10% in 2 games where we will beat dees by 12 goals + and doubtful against crows
still a good chance none the less

Spot on... Dogs need to lose the last two rounds and we need to win the last two rounds :)

We aren't going to make top four, I am over the moon we are in the finals lets enjoy the ride people. Lets stop thinking about the top four etc, the club promised us finals this year and they have delivered. Ahhhhh glorious finals how I have missed thee.

I'll certainly be hoping for Geelong to dole out a 5 goal plus defeat of the Dogs on Friday.

If that happens, Ill be furious if we dont come out and smash the Dee's by over 10 goals.

Be in with a red hot chance of making 4th spot then.

Who is to say when we will be in this position again.. We have made finals.. Next focus should be top 4!!!

Look at Port Adelaide...they probably thought after there G.F they would be playing deep into the finals for the next 5 years...

Playing finals has been ticked, but at the end of the day half the teams in the comp play finals...so who cares.. time to lift the eyes and try and achieve something special this year...

All this just playing finals talk annoys me....

If we beat the Dees and Floodelaide, and the Bulldogs get beaten by the Cats, I woudn't be surprised if the Pies tank their game against the Bulldogs to prevent the Blues getting a double chance. They know we are a much more serious threat to the flag than the Bulldogs given our impressive list talent and our Clubs flag winning expertise. :)

no chance in hell collingwood would tank a match just to keep us out of top 4. they're stupid but not that stupid.

There is no way the pies would want to play around with the momentum they currently have... even if they rested 3 or 4 players... I guarantee the blokes that come in would be hungry as anything to try and snaffle a spot in that side...

At the end of the day, we cant control what other sides do... but it would be silly not to aspire to get the top 4, and then look at actually going deep into the finals...

I can see it, we've won 6 out of our last 7, and can win our last 2.

Bulldogs have a couple of tough games in fron of them, so we're a big chance for a top 4 finish

Agree with this. We can certainly match it with the top sides, providing our intensity at the ball is there. Confidence can do wonderful things.

Fourth or fifth, doesn't matter this year. Carlton FC has nothing to lose in this finals campaign. We've struggled since 2002 and we have finally made the top eight. The pressure will be on the opposition sides, particularly in week two of the finals. Great opportunity for some upset finals wins.

Right now that would be closer to the mark, I feel.
I think it is currently...

1. Swan
2. Judd
3. Didak
4. Davis
5. Murphy
6. Pendlebury
7. Gibbs

I hope that happens because if it does, then Collingwood has sealed third spot if we can beat Sydney. The Round 22 match against the Western Bulldogs then becomes a dead rubber for Collingwood.
If that happens, Ill be furious if we dont come out and smash the Dee's by over 10 goals.
I'm sure that Carlton will try to improve their percentage, but I don't think it will make any difference.

If the Bulldogs lose by 5 goals, and if Carlton wins by 10 goals, then they will still need to make up 14 goals in the final match to pass the Bulldogs percentage, and that is practically impossible. The Bulldogs needs to lose their last two matches, and Carlton needs to win their last two matches to finish 4th. It is the only way.

Corrected the errors in your list for you....

1. Judd
2. Gibbs
3. Murph
4. Stevens
5. Walker, Hadley, Grigg, Pendlebury
6. Carazzo, Scotland, Swan
7. Robinson - but improving, (Joseph - future star?)
8. Gap
9. O'Bree, Lockyer, Bentick
10. Gap
11. Toovey

I haven't put small forwards in the midfield list, because they're not midfielders. :)

If the dogs get done by 10 goals though ( injuries mounting... Geelong firing up for finals so not beyond the realms of possibility ), and the Blues can smash the demons ( i.e get on top early and make sure we win the game first, and instead of taking the foot off the peddle then, trying to smash them by 15 goals+) Once again not beyond the realms of possibility. If this took place, both teams would go into the final round on roughly the same %. Would come down to who wins by the most come round 22...or Adelaide sneak into 4th if they down the blues and dogs get done too.

Alternatly, if dogs did get up this week by say a goal or 2, all is still not lost for Blues top 4. In this case, we would definatly have to beat the Dees by that 15 goals margin, but then come round 22 if Pies beat dogs by 6 or 7 goals ( very possible on current form, plus Pies would be defending 3rd so something to play for ), and Blues beat Crows by 5 goals ( once again possible on form ), then that would also bring the 2 percentages very close together...

Long way to go in this season... :thumbsu:

1. Swan
2. Judd

Wrong.

Swans had a very good year, but Judds has been better.
  • Swan is 2nd in the AFL (Behind Ablett) for average disposals per game at an average of 32.8.
  • Judd ranks a lowly 25th at an average of 26.2 per match.
However (and notwithstanding an average of over 6 more possesions per game):
  • Judd is 1st in the AFL with inside 50's at an average of 6.0 per game. Swan is 6th with an average of 5.2.
  • Judd is 1st in the AFL for Clearances. Swan is 7th.
  • Judd is 3rd in the AFL for 1st possesions. Swan is 20th.
  • Judd is 19th in the AFL for contested possesions. Swan doesnt rate in the top 50.*
  • Judd is 27th for tackles averaging 5.6 per game. Swan isnt even in the top 50.
*This number gets a whole worse when you consider Swan gets a lot more of the ball than Judd.

Anyone can rack up cheap uncontested possesions running around the back half of the ground. A. Carrazo from a few years ago as a point in case.

Forgot to add Judd acomplishes this with the number one tagger each week. Swan rarely cops a heavy tag after Didak and co.

Moral of the story? Judd is clearly the more damaging player. You'd have rocks in your head to think otherwise.
