Silvagni rediscovers his passion
By Marc McGowan

Casey Scorpions defender Alex Silvagni’s first experience with AFL recruiters at the end of 2006 saw him lose his hunger for the sport for an entire year.

But the promising 20-year-old hopes his next taste will be much sweeter.

Silvagni is enjoying a spectacular start to the Victorian Football League (VFL) season that has already seen him claim the scalps of AFL-listed prospects Mitch Thorp, Jay Neagle and Chris Dawes.

The 192-centimetre Pakenham resident has formed a fearsome partnership with fellow backman James Wall.

This combination has been a major factor in the Scorpions conceding the fewest points in the competition through the first seven rounds.

In Silvagni’s previous two seasons at Casey he spent time at both ends of the ground and even pinch hit in the ruck.

"I didn’t mind going up forward, but I prefer staying down back and adjusting to that role and improving," he said.

"When you’re playing different positions, you have to adjust to them all and go through routines, but I’m suited to the backline."

Silvagni played most of his junior footy for Haileybury College, winning a premiership in his final year at school in 2005.

Then after a promising debut in the VFL the following year – highlighted by selection in the VFL’s under-23 team – he attended an AFL state screening session.

Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton all showed interest, but ultimately Silvagni was overlooked in the national, pre-season and rookie drafts.

Would make a great 4th or 5th round if no-one else gets him.

You know what i was contemplating whether to put him up there. Along with Blease. But i feel our pick (11,12,13,14...) would be paying too much for them if you know what i mean. Steve Hill will no doubt be a great player but i think there are other players we need to look at before them two. Expecting both to be definatley gone by early 2nd round. (Hill to WC, Blease to Melb)

Silvagni would be a great addition for us considering Maxy is coming to the end, Goose is ..... well not looking good.

We need a young fella too come in a help out S. Fish
I remember watching Alex. Silvagni 2 years ago playing full forward for Casey Scorpions against Northern Bullants kicking 6 goals for 6 attempts. Four of these marks were from the receiving end of Mark Mc.Gough . So Silvagni can kick for goals.

We're bloody having a nibble at everyone....
Carlton football manager Steven Icke met Warnock's manager Colin Young in Perth on Friday. Young will travel to Melbourne this week to consider formal offers from Richmond and Melbourne. St Kilda is also believed to have shown interest.
Football operations chief Chris Bond said the Dockers would insist on at least a first-round draft pick in opening trade talk salvos. Bond and Dockers chief executive Steve Rosich refused to comment on Warnock's negotiations yesterday.
Fremantle want Carlton, which has been mentioned as a frontrunner to secure Warnock's services, to offer pick six and Richmond at least its first selection (pick eight). But Carlton is expected to offer only a second-round selection (24) for Warnock.
Melbourne remains in prime position if other negotiations fail and could take Warnock with first-pick in the pre-season draft. The Demons have appreciable room in their salary cap to accommodate a possible $400,000-a-season, four-year deal.

Freo are gonna shoot themselves in the foot and lose Warnock for nothing if they're expecting a 1st round pick for a player who's played only 20 games and picked at 40 something in the draft.
Would be handy to have a young and up and coming ruck duo but no way he's worth pick 13.

After looking through many player profiles, I hope the Saints pick up something like this come draft time.

1st Round: Jackson Trengove (replenish KPD stocks)
2nd Round: Rhys O'Keefe (running half back/ midfielder)
3rd Round: Jamie Sheehan (tough/smart/fast midfielder)
4th Round: Patrick Hayes (very quick, rapid improver = bargin)

Others
Nick Heyne (lovely moving left footer)
Chris Yarran (solid half forward / midfielder)
Tom Swift (been injured so ????, could be a gun mid)
Alex Silvagni (solid year at Casey, full back)
Jon Thompson (plays SAFL, could a bargin, tall/athletic key defender)

There's a chance Trengove will still be there (fingers crossed). He tore an external ligament in his knee and tore his hammy off the bone in a freak training accident. So there will definatley be doubt in some recruiters minds. Adelaide are a huge chance to nab him though.
Lewis Johnston is one that could go anywhere. Is KP but has the engine to run in the midfield. Sort of like Chad Cornes. Could go as early as Richmonds 1st pick or late as early 2nd round,
Jordan Lisle is another similar to Trengove but not as good as him. IMO anyway. Should go late 1st/early 2nd.
That's about it that'll be around our pick.
I think if Trengove is gone we'll opt for a mid in the Mitch Robinson mould. I Think he could be a gun.

hey i am new to this

was wondering if any players have been linked to st kilda so far this season? apart from cousins

cheers
Alot more than usual considering we're still playing:
Daniel Kerr
Robbie Warnock
Brad Fisher
Andrew Lovett

St.kilda must never ever trade away our first round pick. The Barry Brooks case still feels awful just thinging about it.

St.kilda do not have the picks to secure Warnock. Fremantle would not want duds like Fiora, Leigh Fisher, Rix, Ferguson, etc.

Totally agree. I would be absolutely ropable if we traded our first 2 picks.
And that Barry Brooks debacle, that has to be the worst trade ever completed. Disgraceful stuff.

Got given an absolute bath on the weekend by Podsiadly
Good. Hopefully that'll stick in the minds of recruiters from other clubs, as opposed to the other 15+ times he's toweled his forward over the last year.

Got given an absolute bath on the weekend by Podsiadly
Having accounted for VFL and Afl forwards this year he did put in an average game last weekas well as a few St.Kilda listed players . The way the ball was disposed to Podsiadly even Scarlett would not have stopped him. Podsiadly is the current 2008 Liston Trophy winner at 27 years old and plenty of expierience under his belt. I can recall Lockett giving Steve Silvagni a bath by 7 goals who later became full back of the century. Lockett later said he was the best player he played on. Alex Silvagni is only 20 with 16 games this year.As long as he is prepared to learn he should be allright. He has to change that hairstyle though.

i dont know why we're going after warnock. we already have king, rix, gardiner and young mcevoy.

also, people are just getting excited about alex silvagni becos he is the nephew of sos. doesnt mean he will replicate sos's form at all.

I'll second that.

We need some decent youngsters. Whilst we're having a crack at a flag now, we need to look towards the future more.

Armitage, David
McEvoy, Ben
Steven, Jack
Allen, Jarryd
Geary, Jarryn
Howard, Brad
Connors, Eljay

^They should be the group of fringe players. No doubting they would give 3x the amount of effort seasoned hacks would.^

Rix, Michael
Ferguson, Matthew
Fiora, Aaron
Fisher, Leigh
Gardiner, Charlie

^Unfortunatley these are the fringe players. List cloggers who are going no where.
They all need to be delisted.^

Gehrig, Fraser
Harvey, Robert (veteran – inside list)

^Retiring^

Koschitzke, Justin
Dal Santo, Nick
Clarke, Xavier

^Need to be seriously considered for trade. Under performing, perhaps a change of scenery is needed.^

Attard, Jayden
Eddy, Robert

^Elevate^

That leaves 5 spots on the list. Hopefully we can gain an early 2nd round draft pick through Kosi or Dal.

Would you guys go for a trade like:
Nick Dal Santo
For
Daniel Harris (in and under type player)
+
2nd/3rd Rounder or Matt Riggio

It's not the worst proposed trade i've seen. Don't really know. Not liking Dal at the moment so a chewed up twistie and a tic-tac in my books would be about right.

Archie Fraser has warned the club was prepared to make the tough decisions on its list. He said the club needed more elite talent, would not trade away its early picks and understood it needed to lure harder players with the ability to use their skills under pressure.
Those under heat to retain their spots would likely include Aaron Fiora, James Gwilt, Leigh Fisher, Michael Gardiner and Michael Rix.
While Saints fans have thrown Justin Koschitzke and Nick Dal Santo up as possible trade bait, the club has assured them they are wanted.
The Saints have picks 13 and 31 and will not trade them, but have not ruled out swapping listed players for rival players or draft picks.
The finals success of Hawthorn and Geelong has reinforced to St Kilda that strong bodies are back in vogue.
But the club was also determined to bring in elite, young talent to bolster a solid core, Fraser said.
"I would think we would be looking at having our six picks. I can't see the club looking to trade any first-round or second-round picks," he said.
"It's a strong draft, and Drainy and the recruitment guys have done a lot of work on it. We are confident that the top 25 selections are really solid."
Looks as if Kerr is out of the question as is any other star up for grabs. And interesting comment with the 6 picks. A cleanout of the cloggers on the cards? Good riddance. :thumbsu:
