2012 Post Season - Retirements and delistings (list changes) thread

I'm fine with the delistings. Banner didn't get close to selection all year. I think fringe players are going to have difficulty getting a trade with free agency.

Salter must have a contract. D. Stewart and Logan are lucky. I'm happy that Newton is being retained. Where is D. Butcher's name? The family club?

I'm looking forward to seeing what our list looks like in a couple of months.

Clearly not otherwise Surjan and Banner would not have been delisted and Ebert and Logan would probably be searching for new homes.

As devastated as I am about Surjan being delisted, I can absolutely understand it. I still would hate to see him playing for another club but that looks like a reality now. It looks to me that the club had a choice between Surjan and Logan and they've chosen Logan. Without a doubt, Surjan is the better player so why delist him and keep Logan? I don't know the answer but I can hazard a few guesses. By his own admission, Surjan completely lacked any form of application in 2011 which ultimately cost him the vice-captaincy. Prior to 2011 there was the well documented rift with Motlop, no doubt a major contributor to the player in-fighting we heard so much about. In 2012 Surjan returned to peak form but a injury midway through the season ultimately ended his season. These negative factors in combination probably put Surjan behind Logan. Now lets look at Logan. Die hard attitute, works incredibly hard, leaves nothing behind, finished top 3 in the BnF in 2011 when played as a small defender, takes nothing for granted.

For all the potential Banner has, his downfall was always his lack of defensive accountability. Could barely crack a game at SANFL league level at 2 different clubs in his 4th year in the system. Had to go. Brett Ebert for all his faults, was able to hold his spot all through 2012 at AFL level once he earned his promotion in Round 8.

I'd lose drive too if I had to jump through hoops because of a hang-up about one facet of my game while a potato farm and a mummy's boy got games on a silver platter exhibiting defensive 'skills' that were no better.

Oh well, another developmental failing that will be written off as a dud pick.

Those are my 3 +/- Russell.

Gillies and Greenwood should be achievable. Young unlikely, given that Collingwood will chase him hard and will be far more attractive to him.

Disappointing we haven't been linked to Gillies yet, he is exactly what we should be chasing.

I have no issues with clearing deadwood.

Clearing deadwood is fine.

If these delistings had been joined by Thomas, Hitchcock and Logan i'd be much more okay with it. The fact that Surjan who pre-injury was the premier shutdown small defender in the league gets delisted while Tom "the sieve" Logan is retained is absolutely staggering.

Port list management model:

1) Keep ALL of the deadwood
2) Delist senior players that could be easily be turned around by an incoming coach with new ideas (and new fitness staff)
3) Draft Vic Metro flankers
Profit???

aka Case Rohde.

The downfall of not having a senior coach in place when the bulk of the Free Agency wheeling, dealing and list management was being executed.

The coach or lack thereof isn't the problem, its that with no coach we kept `stability' in footy ops.

Surjan wasn't all that great last year or this year, while Logan was OK last year. They are the same age... Maybe Surjan has injury problems as well?

I don't really think there is a whole lot of difference between the two, but I do agree that Surjan is usually better. I don't think it is by that much though (not recently), and TBH I don't really think Surjan was better than Logan this year.

I would have kept Surjan because he is the smarter player, and does have a higher output at his peak. The question is whether he could hit that peak again though.

I don't think its an appalling decision. The delisting of Banner is the one that confuses me the most.

Absolutely.

But had we been able to have the Hinkchardson tandem in place prior to FA starting I doubt Bugalugs, his Vic-based offsider and their wacky theories would've got much airtime and our current pickle matrix would be much closer to a viable hamburger earmuffs prototype.

I am staggered we had the [overdue] balls to shaft Williams and Primus but Mr. Failure has a job for life. Anyone got his quotes upon acquiring Simon Phillips handy?

Surjan kept Eddie Betts to 1 goal when he had kicked 4 the week before and 5 the week after.

This was not an uncommon occurrence throughout the first half of the year before he got injured.

Tom Logan this year decided he was tall enough to be 3rd man up to every contest, allowing his player to kick easy goals from the goalsquare. Surjan would NEVER let that happen.

Surjan... Logan

Surjan when fit and getting a game is an excellent shutdown small defender who regularly kept quality opponents quiet.

Teams score goals through whichever player Logan is on.

Agree totally about Banner though. Never given a fair run like so many hacks on our list.

Surely this is some sick joke

I'm sorry but i've seen some stupid decisions made by this club over the years but this one is right up there. I almost spat my drink out when I saw Surjan delisted. Thought it was quite harsh on Rodan too.

My faith in this club is waning at a rapid rate :(
