2012 Post Season - Retirements and delistings (list changes) thread

Surj is the one that surprised me. While he was fit early in the year he was great but then missed a lot of games through injury. Surely the only reason he would have been delisted is because of injury issues? Also makes it harder to accept when it's someone who is a bit of a sentimental favourite for all sorts of reasons. He's one that I would like to know the reasoning behind his delisting.

I have wondered with Rodan this year whether his inability to play more than about a quarter of good football may also be that his three knee ops are catching up with him. If that's the case then probably not unreasonable that he has been let go.

Great to see the AXE in action here everybody at Port know this club has become a bunch of useless bogans KH has to swing the AXE here this club has to be rejuvenated and the RIGHT type of players brought on board for this club to move forward. Something we have not seen since williams has decimated this club with his incompetencies.

Surj struggled to get a game in 2011 but was in good form in 2012 until injured. I expect that his injury payed a big part in him being delisted.

Don't know why surjan got delisted but i have noticed they are all short players.

Perhaps Hinkley is molding us into a Geelong 2009 side. Only players under 183cm (4 in total) in that team were Chapman and 3 speedsters (Varcoe, Byrnes, Wojo).

Our current pool of midfielders/flankers are all between 183-191cm (Stewart, Boak, Brad, Moore, Young, Gray, Hamish, Broady, Ah Chee, Pittard, Monfries, Kane) making our starting 18 bigger. Now we just need some extra speed and KPDs..

I don't necessarily agree with the delistings (Surjan, wtf?), I guess just trying to make sense of it?

Everyone has to remember

We won 8.5 games over 2 years, been knowingly shite for a lot longer than that.

And this is the group we delist????

The group who did not consistently contribute to our AFL spudness???

Look at the delisted list again ... thats not an axe, its a trim

faquito, that sense doesn't hold if we keep Hitchcock & Brett Ebert

Wow - Rohde is to blame for all these decisions? Seriously - I don't think the guy has necessarily been effective in his role, but it appears this board is not being objective when there is a 'football strategy committee' working closely with Rohde and Cripps. I'm sure the new coaches are having an input. Not that fussed with anyone being gone.

There is a lot to consider and to weigh up, and our football general manager Peter Rohde, national list manager Jason Cripps together with other key staff and our football strategy committee are overseeing that from our end

I'm a little stumped by the Surj love when he's had injury issues that apper ongoing as others have stated. Other than that it seems some are blind to his deficiencies whereby I've observed him being a lazy prick a number of times - he really is no better than a bunch of other players who don't play for the team.

The club has to make calls on attitude - something Primus tried to implement but never went far enough.

There's probably only half a dozen players I'd be concerned about leaving - such as Schultz and the young guys signed over the past couple of years such as Butch, Boaky and HH. The rest are expendable but you have to draw a line somewhere. If a player has little potential for improvement, is out of contract, plus an injury risk or an attitude risk then 'care factor 0'.

Well...... everyone wanted a clean out, so here it is  Not sure of the reasoning around Surjan, surely there are some injury concerns or something behind that one. The others I'm not too worried about.

I think the new coaches are allowing the (many times) discredited football administrators to have too much input on list management.

If we're being unfair, its probably in letting the new coaches off for approving this sort of list management.

haha yeah, I was typing my reply when someone posted that there would be no more delistings... Was thinking maybe Hitchcock would get the chop. Ebert won't be around when we look to play finals.. I guess.

He did actually look quite promising in 2010. I guess all we can do now is hope that the last two years were somehow Primus' fault.

One good game against a Chaplin-less Tigers defence is all I can recall.

So...

We let Pearce go and delist Rodan who was our last player who could run with the ball.
We lose a senior if not great defender so we delist Surjan and keep Logan.
We keep Hitchcock, Stewart and extend Brett Ebert's contract. Banner on the other hand, has his cards marked before the 2012 season starts.
Salter is still on the list. As is Matt Thomas.

Rohde...'we got rid of Surjan as he is too old now, wont be in our next group of players pushing for our next premiership'...

then... ' we have contract negotiations almost done with Hitchcock, Ebert, Salter and LOGAN'..

Only really disappointed with Surjan going but surely there's a reason behind it. Bung-up knees? Otherwise, he'll definitely get a gig at another club. No doubt about it.

I must be the odd one out, I am ok with both Hitchcock and Logan staying.

I have seen enough of Hitchy as Glenelg (when fit) to know that he has the potential there.

I am happy for Logan to be there as an experienced role model/depth player.

As am I! Besides, we can't clear half our list in the one off-season. Hinkley obviously has a plan in place and I'm backing him in.

I'm not sure if you listened to AA, but that's not quite what he said.

Rohde said those players were uncontracted at this stage but to talk about who was in negotiations would indicate who might still get delisted.

The delistings may yet be complete.

I like the sound of this.....
I'm sure he said there wouldnt be anymore delistings, but I like your version better...!!!

Step 1 - last year we had to pay 100% of our salary cap so many players were paid overs
Step 2 - cleanout this year, plus a new coach, plus many resigning's last year which had increases built into this year (incl Boak) plus Monfries and at least 2 more during trade week, means cleaning out players not worth their salary and were not prepared to accept a cut.
Step 3 - today.
