Bullshit, I said I wouldn't go balls deep trying to get into the high picks because there isn't that much standout but runs deep. Still reckon that's what this draft is. Quite a good spread of talent but really lacks standout front end. Compared it to the 2017 draft because I think lots will come out of it but it's going to be a bit hit and miss inside the top 10.

I reckon a few will bust in the top 10 but more than a normal amount of good players will come out of the late first and second rounds.
I disagree with this take myself. The elite top section is broader, but comparing the pick 1 candidates to Ashcroft and Wardlaw from two drafts ago they're not far off at all. Going back to 2020, I think the top end in this draft is superior (granted that was a uniquely messed up draft). Going back over history, I think the kid that ends up pick 1 in this draft will be somewhere middle of the pack in terms of junior career and talent level compared to other pick 1's.

Bont will arguably go down as the greatest bulldog ever.

Is that really what constitutes a star? Because that’s going to make it a very small pool that we can label a star.

I think a star is a star. It sits as the best players in the competition. Bont, Buddy, Dusty, Danger, Petracca, Curnow probably guys like Chad Warner are pushing it now. You'd think the next crop are guys like N Daicos, Rankine, Butters, Gulden, Serong etc who will probably take over from the last crop. Some of the North kids have that potential too.

It's pretty similar to the debates on what constitutes Elite over A grade I guess.

Isn't this just proving my point?

I think there IS a standout crop of 7 or 8, it's just not as strong as past years and is more evenly spread. From that point onward, it's pretty similar to previous years

Compared to last year I think it looks soft though. Reid and Watson types came through from the year before with real hype and momentum. Sanders, Mc Kercher both looked blue chip midfield options etc. I think this one would come in around pick 7 last year.

I'm not confident that Smilie is going to be a gun or a GOP, really not feeling like there are any players that aren't coming with at least some kind of question marks. Kids like Langford, Reid and Lindsay could be the best of the crop and even some of the later in the first round guys like Travaglia.

If I was picking pick 1 I'd probably take Jagga because he has a bit of a POD but not with any confidence that he's the best in the draft.

Are you confident that the top 7 of this draft are all going to be above average talent when they make the AFL? I felt a lot more confident last year.

I honestly wouldn't want to be selecting for us. The range we are in is that just off the peloton hoping for a slider range or reaching for guys I rate.

If there isn't as much standout talent, I'd suggest that that means it's a softer front end than normal.
He clearly says there is 10 who can lay different levels of claim to pick one.

Not having generational talent who is the auto claim at one. Doesn’t mean the pool is bad.

The fact it’s even and “deep” in fact says there is plenty of talent across this draft pool and the side who nails it will be the one who has done their research and been able to place these kids in a situation they can succeed in

I think we are both claiming the same thing but with a different slant to it. You think it's proof of how great it is, I think it's proof of how soft it is. Anyway, I can't be ****ed arguing with you about it any more. You'll set your little yapping dogs on me in a minute.

It’s all good to try be cool and edgy by having a different opinion to everyone about this.

it’s just very weird when a number of different posters. Including an Essendon fan who cuts the tape on this stuff are trying to tell you that you are Infact off base with it.

To go along with that, In the last month. Twomey has said:

  • up to 10 players can lay claim to pick 1
  • multiple clubs want to TRADE IN to this draft
  • recruiters all have different views as to the placement of the talent. But all rate what they are seeing highly.

But you say otherwise.

I'm not edgy I just don't rate it. We'll see in a few years when we revisit it I guess. We can't all be yes men or the world would get boring.

The Essendon dude's opinion I value over yours to be honest, he's mature enough to debate it without cracking the sads.

Sure, but a Harley Reid type doesn't come around very often. I'm not going to speak to Nick Watson because I never really saw it to that level out on the footy field myself, a lot of his hype came from his APS performances.

Just sticking to the last 10 years... JHF and Daicos had that level of elite hype. Rowell kind of did, but there were questions about how his game would translate so I wouldnt say he was at the Harley level. 2018 was similar to this one in that there were a number of hyped kids at the top end, and Walsh didn't separate himself massively although overall I think Walsh would be picked at 1 if he was in this pool. I wouldn't say any of them were at Harley hype levels. Definitely not for McGrath or Rayner or JUH. They may have been clear pick 1 stand outs in their pool but they weren't "generational talents" like Harley.

So over the last 10 years I'd say only JHF and Daicos were at Harley's level of pre-draft hype.

You are lucky you're from Traralgon or I'd call you a campaigner.

Could be 70 picks on this draft, it’s deep are there’s some real quality that runs deep. Imo it just lacks a stand out like Reid, that makes it sound like a lousy top end but it’s actually the reverse imo.

From what I’ve seen. It’s a really strong draft class.

And I think the majority of clubs would be thrilled with multiple first round picks.

The fact so many people are watching these kids play week to week in this thread and we have a variety of players people want - backs up the fact it’s a strong draft.

Maybe it's because we have two potential high picks but I reckon it's a stressful front end. I really wouldn't want to be selecting inside the first 8 picks.

Not lousy because there are always better players it's just not got much standout talent to me. Nearly everyone has at least one question mark.
