Howards spot is much harder to fill than Battle's plus the return for losing Howard is much less than what we might get for losing Battle.

Cordy was picked up as cheap back up - the fact that he has played more than 50% of games since he was signed justifies his contract.
Caminiti is doing Howard's role. We have no one literally no one for CHB

Uncommon opinion but feel like Reid is the type of player to flop at AFL level. Has class, but lacks speed and size. Having one of those attributes at AFL level is almost essential in the modern game if you want to succeed in the mids. Still would prefer Lalor over Reid at this point but lots to play out

Reid is steel Sidebottom. He seems to go ok

I rate footballers over athletic traits. I don't think he looks likely to bust but who knows.

The speed and size worries me in today’s afl midfield. Either gotta be a clearance beast or athletic with speed and power to compete. I actually think he’d be very good off half back with good decision making and composure. Although we have surplus of that a good talent - prefer others

We need mids with a combination of hardness, running power with decent top speed, good ball winning & decision making skills and solid general skills .... if they are good overhead then that's a bonus

These attributes are non-negotiable.

Easier said than done but that's what we need and we can't fk it up

We cannot afford to draft a Dylan Stephens or a Will Phillips type with our 1st or 2nd draft picks

Taller key position players ..... draft best available with later picks we have

Over to you Mr Dalrymple

Lalor bangs out 34 possessions in last weekends GWVR match but hardly touches it for Vic Country ?

Played out of position?

Injured?

Notes from the GWVR game

4 Sam Lalor
Midfielder | 187cm | 30/08/2006

Stats:
34 disposals, 8 marks, 7 clearances, 9 inside 50s

Returning from injury, Lalor was prominent all day, winning the clearances early and providing defensive cover when necessary. Such play highlighted his aerobic underpinnings and running power. His tackling pressure was excellent, with Lalor a constant go-to in the midfield and aided by strong support from Harry Lawson. Lalor’s kicking was composed in traffic and his ball delivery inside 50 was dangerous all day, whilst also being clean around the contest.

Surely he doesn't get written off after one average NC game?

Yeah I'm not writing him off yet. Seemed like an off game. Give him one more vs Country in 2 weeks

Don't worry, we've got a new head of talent identification who wouldn't make such a crippling mistake as drafting a Dylan Stephens type with a top 5 pick.

I’m not giving a top 6 pick for him

id nearly go smith and reid.

reid really has that bit of hunter Clark about him, plenty of tike in traffic and very neat disposal

Yep both would be good but I think Langford should be in those discussion also after his championship games. He was consistently very good and his kicking and delivery out of congestion is elite. Unlike last years draft there are no top 10 stand outs, as Gringo has been suggesting this years draft could have players taken at #25 end up better than the top #10. There is a lot of uncertainty IMO.

Langford seems to me like this year's Freijah. Freijah looked good last year on a wing but its the discussion around upside that led to him sliding. WIll come into the system and have an immediate impact, but won't develop into a star

I also remember a bloke called Mitch Szybkowski from 2 years back - looked like a first round contender because of how he dominated midfields in U18s but didnt get drafted - all because of a lack of leg speed that would inhibit his upside

Drafting Dalrymple/Saints
2010 Wallis(F/S) Libratore(F/S) Jayden Schoefield / Jamie Cripps, Crocker, Ledger / No brainer vs Bleagh.
2011 Clay Smith, Michael Talia, Daniel Pierce / Ross, Markworth, Newnes , Webster / Decent drafting by both.
2012 Hrovat , Hunter (F/S), Josh Prudden / Wright, Spencer White , Murdoch / No difference in actual talent spotting.
2013 Bontempelli / Billings, Dunstan, Acres / OK we know this one.
2014 McLean, Webb, Declan Hamilton / McCartin , Goddard , McKenzie. / McLean a very good later pick.
2015 Dunkley, Kieren Collins, Markus Adams / Gresham, Brandon White , Rice (F/S) / Dunkley a great pickup.
2016 English, Lipinski, Lewis Young / Ben Long , Battle, Ed Phillips. / Battle a good pickup but Bulldogs nailed it.
2017 Naughton, Ed Richards / Clark , Coffield, Clavarino / they only had two decent picks and cleaned up.
2018 Nick Blakey, Rowebottom, McInerney / King ,Bytel , Parker , Hind. / They made better choices.
2019 Dylan Stephens, Will Gould, Elijah Taylor / Byrnes, Conolly / Early pick Stephens vs late pick Byrnes.
2020 Academy players / No-one really.
2021 Sheldrick , Roberts, Warner / Wanganeen-Milera, Windhager, Owens

Overall outdrafted the Saints by a fair bit.

Nothing like him go and watch the championship games...you are way off.

What if he smashes it v Vic Metro?

All of these young potential draftees put in the occasional average games

Jagga only had it 23 times on the weekend ... of course the question is why?

Played out of position?
Less time on the ground?
Was he tagged?

He racked them up in the games before .... 30+ ... looked a level above ... so why the lower output this weekend?

Lalor didn't have a great game v WA but some said he was played out of position .... but he has shown enormous potential in his one Coates League game and at APS School level

Below are some interesting tidbits from Bontempelli's draft profile .... who was a Dalrymple pick ...... and also a comparison with Billings draft profile

Bontempelli

The 192cm prospect had a quiet NAB AFL Under-18 Championships for Vic Metro, but did finish off well against Vic Country in the final game, gathering 21 disposals and nine handball receives. Bontempelli took confidence from that final game of the national carnival into the back end of the season for the Northern Knights.

STRENGTHS
Height and endurance are two of Bontempelli's key components. Bontempelli ran a 14.7 in the beep test at the NAB AFL Draft Combine and having that capacity as a big, smooth-moving midfielder forms part of his repertoire. He can jump and take a mark, and is also a solid kick on both feet. The thing about Bontempelli at this stage of his football life is that when he is on song, he is so hard to beat, because he complements his leap and run with his frame and can turn a game.

WEAKNESSES
Given his height and size, Bontempelli will most likely end up an inside midfielder, which means there is still improvements to be made in his contested ball winning. When he does come to terms with his build, he will look to be more powerful with it, and could work on his burst speed.

DRAFT RANGE
A first-round selection. A harder one to read because some clubs have him as a very early pick and others see him closer to No.15.

BOTTOM LINE
The club which picks Bontempelli will not be looking at the player it gets for next season, it will be excited about the player it may have in a few years when all his components come together. Huge raw potential.

So bottom line for Bont in his draft year was that the potential was there but it didn't all come together for him at TAC Cup level especially in the U18 National Champs .... Dalrymple took a punt based on potential

We went safe and took Billings who was seen as a level above in the TAC Cup level and at the NCs

Billings

A medium-sized forward who is brilliant on his preferred left foot and particularly damaging in and around the goals. Billings is a versatile player who can also play through the midfield and off half-back where his awareness and vision can prove pivotal. He kicked three goals in the last round of the Under-18 Championships against Vic Country to secure All-Australian honours for the second time after a brilliant 2012 campaign as an underage player. Apart from his elite kicking, Billings combines a strong overhead mark with an ability at ground level to make life difficult for opponents. Set to become another member of the large Oakleigh Chargers AFL alumni, Billings is expected to go top five in this year's draft.

STRENGTHS
With his sticky overhead marking and elite skills on both feet, Billings has a couple of strong weapons that separate him from his peers. As a forward he can take a pack mark as easily as crumb a contest, and through the midfield it's not unusual to see him gather the ball, break away from a stoppage and then deliver the pass. Because his skills are so good, Billings looks like a finisher. But he is more than that: good in traffic, can feed the ball out with quick hands, and seems to always find space. At TAC Cup level, he came back from injury and played strong games, and although under duress with his knee, picked up 26 possessions then followed it with 32.

WEAKNESSES
The 18-year-old will need to build his aerobic base before he becomes a permanent midfielder. It isn't at a bad level but will have to improve to be able to play more consistently around the ball instead of across half-forward. Some may see him as an outside player at this stage of his development but his statistics at the championships – 19 contested possessions, 20 uncontested – show him to be pretty rounded in that area.

DRAFT RANGE
Billings is set to be selected inside the top five picks next month. If not, he won't last much longer.

BOTTOM LINE
Billings is a match-winner, a prospect who saves his best for the big moments. With his marking and kicking, he might be the most dynamic player available.

Raw Potential vs Gun Runs on the board

Doesn’t Dalrymple have history of going against the grain of the national carnival and favouring Nab League form?

I hope he's not past his prime, Toce was going well. This is the most important draft in ages. **** it up and we are in all sorts of trouble.

Lalor's disposal looks terrible. I would have him late first round on that alone.

I watched all of the footage of Lalor's games that I could find. I'm not seeing it with him. Poor user, didn't see a lot of elite traits.

Jagga played outside the midfield in a lot of that match while they gave guys like Gross a run in the middle.

Hadn't rated Moraes at all until the last quarter of that match where he looked like a cross between Rozee and Butters. He's a bit of a weird player but he's more the type who might have some X factor that a guy like Dalrymple sees in him.

On Bont he was playing legendary games of footy where people would talk about this kid that was Nicky Dal's cousin that has kicked 15.2 from 52 disposals and was playing out of the middle. The knock seemed to be that his size might make him too tall for mid. It was the era of Andreas Everett not Paddy Cripps.
