I will add a couple of more frustrating things.

The backS all flying up, perfect example was Tmac at the start of the last he should of been able to fly but protect Jetta to mark. But instead he flew and spoiled Jetta, easy goal to hawks.

How many times did Obrien, rough and scily flew across the pack and take an easy mark in the last 1/4.
Very melbourne thing it's been over the past few years. We always seem to commit to many player to a pack to spoil and opposition always waits down for the crumb, probably the least i've seen of it in a season was last year

JKH is a certified potato, Wagner is almost as much of mystery. Why do we need a slower, less skilled Hibberd out there? Bugg is only good at being a pest, Vince has gone a year too long, Hannan needs to go away and learn how to play.

There's a lot of people who defend Wagner, and maybe he does show some promise i don't see. But i don't think he'll make it in the AFL, he's just a fill in backman and that's it IMO

My brothers. Let's be brutally honest here. Our season came to an end when Gawn went down. He was our single most important player and all the more so with the Third Man up rule.

You add Gawn today and we would have won by 5 goals. All I want to see out of this year is desperation, effort and improvement.

I was at the game. My wife barracks for Melbourne. I think a few of you are going for soft targets rather than opening your eyes. JKH was no worse than Petracca. Vince was one of the few that really tried in the first half. And I know you love Viney - he is crazy brave. But the number of times he fought for the ball then hand balled straight to the opposition or to no one in particular really hurt the team. Ton Bugg has shocking decision making. Switches the play to a contest in front of the goal. And Jones's kicking!
Too many demons prefer to handball rather than take responsibility to kick. Don't they trust themselves?

Petracca had his worst game of the season probably, but he has been very good before today. JKH is playing for his career and did sweet **** all. Bugg and Jones have also copped a lot of criticism on here.

Petracca had a quiet game but kicked 4 last week. JKH hasn't done anything to suggest he can help win games.

All the players try but Vince with over 200 games experience needs to make better decisions with the ball. Jones had an off day by foot but is normally reliable.

There is nothing wrong with the happy handball game but there is a skill involved in handballing to space and advantage not 1m to your teammate facing the wrong way. The first quarter was a prime example.

The 3rd quarter we got the handballs going to space and advantage which gave players time to kick and hit targets by foot.

Melbourne lost this because they are not a mature team. The players in this team that look like they are going to be superstars (Oliver and Hunt for example) are too inexperienced at this point.

For me....
I am under no illusions this year, if we make the finals (if that is a measurement) great, but no big deal. But what you said is what I am looking for this year. Next year is the big improvement and the following two years after that is our real chance to win a Grand Final. And the way the other teams are looking now, list wise, Melbourne is well placed.

What I do know... the level of competition to get into this side must be immense. Simply put if you don't perform you are gone it seems. The changes will be interesting next round.

I've been saying that to myself for about 10 years now, it's always about how well we're going to be next year.

Why can other clubs turn it around quickly but we're forever stuck in a rebuild?

Fugly: 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters allowing Hawthorn to walk the ball out of defence under very little pressure and hit up targets at will. Sure fire way to lose to a team who are excellent exponents of hitting up targets with a control the ball gameplan.

Good: We played one great quarter and almost won the game. Imagine if we played 2 good quarters, or 3, or 4 even.

Bad: Not convinced the gameplan is capable of being carried out for the time required to win games of football consistently. Needs to be balanced with some more emphasis on defence.

I feared in 2015 that we'd have to wait until guys like Petracca/Hogan are hitting close to 100 games before we can become a threat, and that is likely to be validated.

Will never play finals if we don't play 4 quarters of football. And we are yet to this season after 7 rounds. Really worrying in regards to our coaching staff who can't get that performance out of the players. Well done to St.Kilda who showed us how it's done last week. I'm on the Saints train for the rest of the year. I hope they make finals, because we sure won't be (Again).

I won't dwell on the ugly as there are far too many to mention, but I absolutely hated watching Jeffy hold up three fingers to Stratton letting him know how many he kicked on him that third quarter. It goes to show that this club, the players, supporters, coaches etc rated themselves far too highly this season and gets way too ahead of themselves. We were still behind by a goal or two when he did it! And he played like crap for most of the game except for that brief 10 -20 minute period. So Jeff, when you've won three flags like Stratton, you might have the right to hold up three fingers and wave it in his face you moron. Until we find another 4-5 players who have above average kicking skills, our delivery into the F50 will stop us from being a top 8 side. I think our effort is mostly there, but we are not a skillful side and we are playing a brand of footy that requires players with skill. So a long way still to go I'm afraid. Without Gawn, we are honestly a real chance to finish bottom 4 this year. With Kangas, Suns and Blues finding form, and Sydney and Hawks surely improving as the season goes along, we are in serious danger of bottoming out as the season is so even. Absolutely no game i am confident in winning...

I disagree 100000000000000000%
Check the stats, Melb win contested ball, uncontested ball and clearances even without Gawn - he is icing on the cake.
Our biggest gaping hole of an issue is going inside 50. We have spent so much time and energy on controlling the ball with 10 million handballs, they have no decent plan going inside 50. It is just non stop bombs hoping for a mark, or garlett to snag a goal. If we had the competition average inside 50 effectiveness we would be 7-0. But we haven't - theres no plan b - only lets hope for the best.

It's embarrassing and the year is already cooked because of it. We have had the easiest draw and we are 3-4. Pathetic.

I don't really disagree with the theme of your post, but Jeffy has probably been our most consistent player over the first seven games and singling him out for pointing out to Stratton he was playing well on him is rather strange.

First post after a game and what a ****ing poor excuse it was for a game

Good
- Frost was excellent saved at least 3 goals
- Viney best game all year
- Tyson was solid
- Hogan was good and did all he could

Bad
- I like oliver but he handballs way to much when he has a clear chance at kicking the ball
- JHK, Hannan and OMac should not be seen at AFL level again
- Our inside 50 kicking was horrible every second one was straight to a hawks defender and the main culprit was jones saw at least 5 i know he tries hard but he has some of the worst disposal i have seen
- TMac has no impact on the marking contest at the moment
- All the damn defenders going to spoil the ball and then not killing the contest which leaked very easy goals over the back
- Vince does he turn the ball over or what
- Wagner why bring him back after one decent game in the vfl i know milkshakes is great wither but he was better last week then wagner was this one
- Bugg can he actual kick the ball always handballs it to some under more pressure then him and never take shots at goals when he has the chance

Fugly
- The first half and last quarter how did we lose the momentum after a good quarter of footy
- Listen to the Channel 7 comm team and Matthews being as biased as hell
- Our game style of handballing about 30 times before kicking

Sorry but that's completely erroneous. Petracca set up a couple of goals with his booming kick and was involved in some other scoring chains too. AND IT WAS HIS WORST GAME FOR THE YEAR.

Don't ever compare the two again, thank you.

Some observations:
- we were lacking height or at leasg the ability to spoil marks. Seemed like Roughy, McEvoy and O'Brian took a lot of contest marks.
- our players need to learn to not all go for the spoil and over-comit, needs to be an emphasis on manning up at the drop.
- Jones lace out hit the Hawks multiple times in our 50. Either sit it up a bit or bomb it or hit the target please.
- We hardly ever lead or sheppard, i note this every week but it still astounds me. Viney did a few handballs and shepards and they resulted in our cleanest entries. Hogan also marked the balls he lead strongest to.
- Handballing into space whilst moving got us going in the 3rd. Hopefully this style is what is being preached for the whole game.
- 1 on 1 our players are more talented at winning the contest so why do we need to commit so many players to each contest? I hope that it becomes a maturity thing when all our midfield learn to back off and trust each other to win the contest. Our midfield has lots of experience now so its looking like more of a coaching directive, which i'm not a fan of.

Imagine being a forward trying to lead or have any sort of leading pattern when you need to time the 1 of the 15 handballs to start your run. Its near on impossible for our forwards so makes it harder for mids to kick in as how the **** do you work in sync. I havent noticed this handball shite as much as this week and i reckon its cause no Gawn. Instead of knowing we can attack straight off the bat we are setting up to try win it back then flick it around to get free. We also dont have Gawn taking marks down the line or floating down back he is seriously that big of a lose

Good point about the leading. Anyone who has played footy will understand how hard it is to provide an option leading up when your team overuses handball. You'll lead to the guy who just got it in space but instead of pulling the trigger he'll handball again and now you're way too close to lead up and are out of the contest.

Hogan/Watts and Pedo hardly took a mark i can remember leading up in our forward half. Everything was contested because we don't counter with speed we over use the handball and run to 65 before sitting it on their head. Or when we do win it we run in waves and clog our own forward line up leaving no room for any forwards to do their thing.

I don't see Gawn making a huge difference because we are already winning the contested footy and clearances and we are winning I50 counts.
We are conceding nearly 100 points every week to some pretty average attacks because our over zealous zone is too easy to score on and too hard to score with

Sorta explains the lack of leading to be fair to the forwards too, I mean whats the point of leading when you've got no space? The only times we look dangerous is when we move the ball quickly so at worst its a 3v3 up forward. Also agree that Gawn isn't going to make a huge difference to our clearance work because we're still winning them, he will at least help with the dump kick down the line.

I still for the life of me don't understand why we flood our own forwardline either. I feel like a lot of our issues so far this year have been more gameplan related than personnel, we've had enough talent out on the park to win all 7 games but our systems are breaking down badly (In fairness today I reckon the lack of effort early hurt more than any strategical stuff though).

I need a holiday from football, because this season is taking its toll. (Nobody say ******* buller!)

Round 1 i was a nervous wreck with the hype from both sides, then the start and response left me all over the shop. Round 2 frustratingly drained me despite the win. Round 3 deflated me with the misses. Round 4 was closer than it should have been and the final moments exhausted me. Round 5 was worthy defeat as they come, but the game itself and the context around it hurt. Round 6 was unexpected bounce back, then followed up today with a loss that i predicted but didn't want to happen. I'm drained, i love the club but i don't know if i can give 100% support next week from being exhausted by this season so far
Take next week off cos it's gonna hurt!!!
