Malceski's done his knee again

No. Hanners' strength is not his kicking. He's not a shocking kick by any means, but we've got more damaging kicks on our team. He would be much better utilised as an inside/outside midfielder.

I reckon we'll see Sumner step into the HBF role. He's a superb kick, accurate and penetrating, he's quick, and he's tough. The fact that he's yet to be dropped this preseason tells me Longmire rates him. I reckon he'll have debuted by Rd 8.

I acknowledge your sentiments on Sumner from the snippets I've seen. But your marking Hanners on playing in the AFL, and Sumner in the ACTFL.
Hanners devoured that competion in his time in, whilst still schooling. He was irresistible and demanded to be picked. Sumner is yet to show this quality, hopefully this is his time and perhaps the Eski question can be answered. Hanners is ready for the challenge and is fleet of foot and mind, perfect for for filling the freelance flanker role.

Hanners kicking is certainly undersold, as is his versatility.

I'm not saying Sumner would be as good a player as Hanners if he came into the side, not at all. All I'm saying is that Hanners would be wasted on the HBF. He's a great midfielder, he's made for it. He can win clearances, he has a handy burst of excelleration, and he knows how to find the ball. His kicking, however, is just normal. It isn't a major weapon, so it doesn't justify sacrificing his natural midfield talents for a role on the HBF. It would be robbing Peter to pay Paul, only Peter needs the money more.

No robbing required.
B1, Birdy, Goodes, Jack, Kennedy, McVeigh and ROK will ensure Peter, Paul and Mary's books are balanced and in Budget.
Mal's role, is of a midfielder to the minders, the number 1 distributor when desperate down back. And the best placed to perform this task, is a free running midfield type. One whose place and performance is assured.

I'd rather put McVeigh on the HBF than Hanners. He's a better kick than Hanners. Even Jack, who is inconsistent but penetrating. Goodes will be playing forward.

Sorry, but Hanners is tailor-made for midfield. If he starts struggling there this year (for example, if he's struggling to break a tag), then think about moving him, but the team doesn't need him there. We need guys with good footskills, with genuine "hurt factor" by foot. Hanners is no mug by foot, but he's not in the top echelon at the club.

Some merit in the McV suggestion, he's unquestionably the next best kick in our team after Mal. Unfortunately, he has the defensive skills of a quivering titmouse and is one of our major sources of goals from the midfield.

Time for Marty the Moose to step up - he's looked good in the pre-season and the left foot has some good synergies with the missing Mal.

Kennelly and Malceski aren't exactly defensive experts either. Not that I'm suggesting that McVeigh be moved there, but he'd go alright. He's decent overhead too, and he's smart.

Had a bit going on in the real world lately. I'll be back a bit more once the real stuff starts.

hope alls good, best wishes...:thumbsu: sometimes getting on here is like a break from the real world to me. reading your posts is like a tonic they make me feel smarter.

Goodes will play forward with spells in the middle, thats from the horses mouth. Jack, centre and forward of centre only, best goal poacher by far of midfield members.
If news is needed of Hanners hurt factor by foot, or penetration with punt, the MCG dayout gainst the Dawks last season tells a story times two. With a further fitness base his kicking quality will continue to climb, he is much more than servicable.

Excellent attitude. Far more experienced player now, I am sure he will return as if he had not left.

I thought he was very cautious in his first year or so back. Looked uneasy about his leg, quite unbalanced. This probably negated his accuracy by foot.

This all returned of course and he has a sensational 2010 season. Looked far more balanced.

He sounds very upbeat for someone who has just done his 3rd knee. Very mature outlook.
