It's an unfortunate combination of poor form and injuries to key players.

Rance - Best 5, VC
Riewoldt - Best 5, VC
Caddy - Best 10
Houli - Best 15
Grimes - Best 10, on-field leader
Grigg - Best 22
Short out after 5 mins - Best 15
Rioli injury impacted after half time.

That's basically 2 of our Top 5 players out, 4 of our best 10, and essentially 7 of our best 22 out today after the Short injury.

Not to mention a number of players being underdone, a few very fresh faces in Balta, Garthwaite, and Stack, and guys like Dusty, Prestia, etc who are playing well below their best at the moment.

The margin looks bad, but the game was alive with 10 minutes left in the last.

I don't think this is going to be our year in terms of winning the flag now, but make no mistake, we'll be the most dangerous 5th-8th team come finals time if we can sneak in, which is still very possible.

And this what shits me the most about Ellis' game. He had an opportunity to bury De Boer over the boundary line I think in the third. Instead he basically arse cradled him over the line to make sure he didn't hurt him.

The guy has been humping and scragging our best player all day and you basically caress him over the line when he's holding the ball.

You're not a team player, or contributing to a team culture of protecting one another. I've been a fan in the past, but you offer too little for a senior player.

Nank on the other hand buried the little campaigner in a great tackle without giving away a free. More of those please.

Has always been our problem the other mids dont bury taggers, should be getting stuck in at every opportunity make de boer regret it when he wakes up still sore next Wednesday.
Same with Cameron just level the prick make him earn his goals.

Rance, Riewoldt, Grimes, Caddy, Houli and now Short all out injured, all well and truly in our best players.

We won't see Rance again this year, and Riewoldt will be back in 4-5 weeks.

Keep in mind that's 4 players all missing from one part of the ground that has been rock solid for many years.

Add on top that our midfield is currently non existent on top of injuries us as supporters really have to temper our expectations for a few weeks until we get a number of experienced players back.

stoked with stacky ..thought he was great. we need to play ross and rcd and blood them as quick as possible...unfortunately dimma will go into self preservation mode and think that bellis is our best option🤯🤪
Maybe ross, but RCD is weeks away might not play this season

Unfortunately haven’t been to a game this season due to work but have watched them all. Honestly think we lack hunger and intensity. We are getting into good spots but butchering possession. We are allowing far to much space when the ball transitions from our F50. A few players need to grit the teeth and do some ugly stuff to help change the rut they’re in.
Changes for next week
OUTS: Short (Inj)
Castagna/Butler (one needs to be dropped both create great play but don’t do enough and are making big mistakes)
Ellis (needs confidence and fast won’t bad mouth him but Jesus mate your possession by foot and hand is terrible)
Graham (really slow start believe he’s a better run with player clearly hasn’t been given a role and can’t find the footy.
INS: Houli (I hope he’s ready)
Caddy (will add some forward and on ball smarts)
Ross (debut done enough in VFL and had 10 tackles)
Grimes (missed him badly)
I know we have injuries but that can’t be our excuse.
Graham was good round 1 but poor the last couple.

Never expected to win today, or next week, TBH.
Rounds five to 11 is when we should be able to capitalise on some wins.

I can't believe that we don't tag anyone. We won a flag with the help of a great tagging job. Any danger of somebody doing the job.

How three f**k did we let Cameron run around with a dodgy shoulder for over 3 quarters without bumping him or tackling him hard? F**k me.

So assuming all 3 of Grimes, Caddy and Houli are right to go next week, it has to be Ellis, Butler, Markov and Castagna to go out. Bring in Ross as well.

I would seriously look at dropping Martin right now too. He's as much value to the side as Ellis or Butler right now. Clearly cannot handle a hard tag...but he's getting no protection from his teammates either. Maybe Townsend should get a game sometime to hurt a few people.

Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I can see all of Butler, Ellis and Castagna playing next week.

We're 3rd last in the AFL for forward pressure. there's your answer. Rioli excluded.

Martin is off - so off I'd tell him to take the Port game off and come back in 2 weeks. He's nearly useless ATM anyway.

B. Ellis - FMD if the coaching staff think this squib is the way to go then we will finish out of the 8. Anybody that does not go 100% at every contest should not be playing AFL. Full stop

Prestia - not earning his $. Bloke cannot kick

The coaches - the tactic to chip short was diabolical

Injuries suck, but every team gets them, our depth needs to be better. Players like Markov, Butler, Castagna, Broad should all be better than they were last year, but they're not.

Lack of effort, shit skills, it's pretty hard to watch,

The new rule changes are ****ing awful and genuinely impact us, but Hardwick needs to be better, we need to be better, injuries or not.

its hard to break a tag like that from a little rat

why isnt the moron coach instructing martin to tag someone good from the other team and / or martins team mates to crack in and try and hurt deboar
lol, modern football dosent work like that anymore.... ie out of form goes to dusty goes to whitfield = whitfield still carves us and dusty loses his strike power and then debore is the midfield spare who sets up 5 goals. careful who you are calling a moron i say..... my opinion only of course. ;)

I think the effort was there, but the skill execution was very poor for this level. Again, our mids were dominated. Cotchin and Martin were very poor by their standards. Prestia's foot disposal was U10's standard. Graham was just as bad. Only Lambert and Edwards were effective in the midfield. That puts pressure on the defense, which is already decimated. Too many passengers, and it is time the riot act was read to Ellis, Butler, Castagna and Graham. You may have premiership medallions, but if you want to coast around basking in former glories, then step aside for someone who wants it.

Tom Lynch can only get better, and Sydney Stack's debut was enormous.

I think the coaches need to evolve and stop thinking we can play the "Richmond way" of 2017. We have been found out. How Whitfield can run around gathering possessions at will like this afternoon without a tag is negligent. No respect to the opposition at all. While their dirty tagger does the job on Dusty. Midfield coaching / setup and form has been pathetic this year.

Out - Ellis, Markov, Butler, Castagna, Graham (omit) and Short (Inj)
In - Houli, Grimes, Caddy, Baker, Bolton and Naish
been a while since key forwards kicked 7&5 against us in a game . Undermanned defence and a beaten midfield . George and butler have totally lost it , Ellis , tried hard but like a few of our mids lacks any hurt factor. Our best chance of turning our firm around is to continue to invest in our youth , stack debut was outstanding, would have been knackered by half time
Handy Ins : caddy , grimes baker Bolton
Out George Ellis butler short

The positives
Stack what a find
Balta was good today, chased like a madman and impacted the contest repeatedly
Garth was short of a gallop so the run will do him good
Edwards was very good
Lamborghini busted a nut
Macca tried hard
Lynch looked good Cotch tried hard but didn’t have much impact

The negatives
Markov
Castagna
Butler
Ellis
Graham were all so bad they should be dropped
Dusty looks disinterested and has fumbled more in the first 3 weeks than I’ve seen him fumble over the past 6 years. Stunning
Prestia disposal was horrendous

We look underdone

How do you know that was the tactic? Or was that just what the players were doing?

Players have minds of their own.
