Autopsy Round 17, 2024 : Hawks fall in a hole in Geelong

No Dear, no Hawthorn. Not even joking. His mere presence, let alone the 2 goals here and there, just invaluable. How we make this work within a framework of Chol, Lewis, Gunston is the real question

Edit: just wanted to clarify that even with Sicily, Ginnivan, and yes, Dear we would've lost tonight. Just wasn't our night. Geelong too good unfortunately.

I do also sneakily wonder if GMHBA is a hard place to coach for opposition coaches when things are going badly because you can’t easily get down to the bench mid quarter like you would the g and marvel

The competition is quite even with most teams within 10% of each other imo .
We had won 5 on the bounce , 6 from 8 and bar the Swans all sides have had down periods and extended losing streaks .

Even the Cats who are far more experienced and simple a better side currently than us have looked rubbish for a month and a bit.
If we played them 4 weeks ago , we might have rolled them . Timing is everything sometimes.

Point is , we don't accept the performance but you need to accept the reality of a tough , tight comp where every week throws a challenge at you .

How many coaches leg it out of the box mid quarter and go to the bench to stem the bleeding?

Meek beaten

We never play there and to think that won't be a point of difference is ridiculous

Day,Scrimma and Moore where the only ones who seemed to rock up.

I don't think this is anything to really worry about but if we see a similar game next week it might be.

Can't play Breust and Gunston in the same team. We have been able to control games by getting extra numbers to the contest. Can't do that with them both in the team. You could tell we missed Ginnivan's ability to always get to contests.

Midfield was dominated like it was the first 5 rounds. Just like then, Worpel was easily the best mid.

Mitchell did a great job on Stengle but Frost is more trustworthy with the ball

Chol was starting to win me over past few weeks but reverted back to his usual game tonight - lazy and only went when he felt like it.

Absolute rubbish. I had a good view of the game and he was at his usual level of endeavour. Given the choice between Chol’s turn and chase efforts today and Lewis’ I know who I’d be calling out - and it’s not Chol.

Agree that we were due for a down game but tonight’s effort was pathetic. Cats had a few out yet their no names stepped in and embarrassed some of our supposed better players. Too many soft down hill skiers got exposed tonight. God help us when Day gets injured again - was epic in his efforts again big just gets targeted week after week. Only players who stood up were Day, Worpel, Moore and McDonald to a lesser degree but at least he tried

Serong should have played - we got killed in the air which makes the Mitchell in more puzzling

Chol was starting to win me over past few weeks but reverted back to his usual game tonight - lazy and only went when he felt like it. Breust and Gunston are cooked - we played two men down in the forward line

The loss will do us good - the need to bring in more genuine talent, hardness and depth was re enforced tonight. Our off season will be critical this year
Chol comment is genuine rubbish

Thoroughly dismantled. Couldn't handle their pressure. They brushed us off the ball with ease. Stewart was immense in the centre. Sam needs to teach the unsociable Hawks ways. Perhaps it's time for a touch of the changing room geetar ploinking?

Not all doom and gloom, it was bad but we sook for 24 hours and we move on. Finals still a chance if the boys bounce back and that’s the focus. OTTNO

Perfect summary

wow, a lot of pure negativity here.
young side, five in a row, should really be 7 in a row. Back from Perth, 6 day break, no skipper, a couple of good forwards down, strange ground to 90% of the team, bloody hell what do you expect? We had plenty of shit losses in our three peat, its an even comp and if you are 5% off you get hammered, especially by the good teams.
didn't see anything negative today, boys had a crack and things didn't fall the right way.
8-8 now, fabulous effort from a young team, far better than most expected and if you were offered 8-8 at the start of the season, let alone after 0-5, you would have grabbed it with both hands and sprinted out the door.

Take a chill pill, these guys are doing just fine.

We needed that. We aren’t a finished product yet and hopefully now the media will shut the **** up.

Geelong played really well and they deserve credit. They never let up and we couldn’t find a way to disrupt them.

Learn from how much pressure good teams put on you. Learn how to deal with it and learn how to emulate it. Then we can make these losses a positive. I think we are capable of doing that.

ps we didn’t lose because of Sicily just please don’t

Pretty good post this just about says enough.

Geelong took the game very seriously. They were playing finals level football. The pressure was high and they were very disciplined. They needed to make a statement because losing to us would have been the beginning of the end debate about the team which got walloped by Carlton a few weeks ago. Scott knows exactly where his team is at. They are not in a good place. The vision of the box after the game told the story. The congratulations like they won a very big game and relief was palpable. They were obviously extremely worried about losing to us.

Now, the team. The biggest issue for this team is a mental one and it has been there from the beginning of the season. They do not cope with pressure and lose their ability to execute and so start falling into old habits which degenerates into slow movement, inability to win at ground level and very poor general play. Sam Mitchell needs to work on this critical aspect of the team because they will not progress until they can develop in a way to keep their minds focused and play disciplined football under intense pressure. At the moment, when the pressure is on, it all goes out the window. And much of it looked like the way the team was playing early in the season.

Real tough day at the office.

We could not work out how to play that ground at all. Every kick in, and short pass was a disaster of epic proportions and ended in a turnover.

We had dropped chest marks, Newk and CJ which cost us goals, we had multiple defenders jumping in the air and leaving 2 or 3 cats at ground level on their own, Dekoning and Blitz running around kicking goals…..

Little Seamus is a goer but his disposal by foot is well below par.

Nash fumbled and bumbled his way through the whole game.

Punk and Gunners need a send off.

Lewis was moving like a semi trailer before his injury. Would love to see Skaife come in for a few weeks as a different target and Lewis not come back until he is 100% fit.

We really lost the flair out of the backline with Weddle having to lock down.

Didn’t move the ball well at all majority of the night. Midfield got outworked and probably beaten tactically as well.

Games like this are part of the journey. We have to learn to play without the skipper, and against experienced teams that bring good pressure.

Young group off a short break from Perth at a new venue it was always a chance to happen.

We learn, recover, and we get down to Tassie next week and bounce back.

Got to ride the bumps with a grin ladies and gents, yeah it was bad but we can surely all agree we are moving forward and this is a good reality check for a bunch of kids.
