Autopsy Round 5, 2024 - Suns destroy hopeless Hawks

Meek finn Frost Scrimmers Mitchell and Mass will come off bruised. I'd be amazed if any of our other players have a mark on them.

Butler ramsden MacDonald Sicily Nash and Newcombe were deplorable - can we drop them all - Box Hill were putrid today as well

The concern was at the end - did anyone else see it?

Sam Mitchell, alone on the bench - gazing into his note with a look of utter confusion and bewilderment. No-one came to talk, indeed 2 mins earlier Newcombe actively lent away when SM tried to talk to him.

I'm really wondering wether the players are unhappy with SM?

Is there conflict - Sam can be pretty abrasive. And stubborn.

Maybe it's as simple as Amon doesn't want to play back - but has to.
Weddle wants to play up the ground - SM won't do it.

Jia didn't start the first or 2nd quarter onfield and looked pissy all day.

I have wondered listening to some filmed coaching sessions wether the players actually understand what he wants? The amount of times he asked questions and got no reply was in hindsight a bit of a worry.

Regardless - if they don't understand the message - that's on Sam.

If they can't perform it - that's on Sam.

If this was an English soccer team - it looks like a team who's manager has lost the dressing room.

I hope that's not the case - but I've never seen so many senior players look so disinterested, or be so soft with their efforts.

We will struggle against North next week - and based on last week - WCE aren't a certainty either.

The media will come hard for Sam this week

Mitchell needs to swing the axe, cannot reward mediocrity.

Ward, CMac, Butler, Nash and few others need to be dropped.

Cannot pick the team just on talent, needs to be picked based on who is prepared to bleed for the jumper - set some standards in this department. Frost, Maginnes, Worpel, Massimo… these types need to be first picked and played. The rest can have a spell until they’re prepared to leave it all out there and put it on the line every time.

Some pissweak efforts tonight that cannot be accepted, there needs to be some standards set.
Hope not, we’d field 3 players, 2 are injured

I just want to know from track watchers, do we place any emphasis on the training track on quick hands and also handballing under pressure in a tackle.

Because our efforts in game are deplorable. I keep harping on about but we are swimming against the current when it comes to knowing how to get rid of the ball “legally” in a tackle or in a pack situation. Instead we try and swing around tackles and get penalised even when hand does scrape the ball.

Get with it for ****s sake

If he has lost the players he is gone.

If not i think judge him next season.

No coach was going to turn this around in a few seasons.

Really disappointing night.

Couldn’t get the footy enough and then between the arcs we just butchered it completely. At times we were disorganised. We were in the game early and competing, but intensity fell away and didn’t put th under enough pressure.

A tough early draw and injuries to key players really exposing our list, and I can’t hold that against Sam. But the poor form among a lot of the group - particularly the midfield - is something Sam does need to address and fast.

I’m hopeful we can win next week.

Full Time Update:

THE GOOD:
Finn - Potentially another string to his bow? Three goals is a great return.
Scrimshaw - Stood tall tonight.
Weddle - Again showed some glimpses of what he's going to become. More please.
impey - Was (too) harsh on him in the first half. Was strong all night.
Frost - Continued his great run of form.
D'Ambrosio - LOVED his hardness at the ball. He already bleeds for this club. Fast becoming my favourite player.
Ginnivan - Tried hard all day. I thnk we need to accept there's perhaps a different set of rules. At least in the short temr.
Meek - Franked his form with another strong performance. Definitely something to build on.

THE BAD:
Croc - Not sure what his role was tonight? Saw him a bit in the back half, which was surprising.
Chol - Struggled tonight. Struggled to take a mark, but to my eye, he was held often?
Umpiring - I'm loathe to blame the umpires for any result, but gosh there were some stinkers called (or not called).

THE UGLY:
Midfield - Good god. I can't even. That was possibly the worst performance I've seen for quite some time. Not sure what happened here, but collectively they were all down. Newk, Ward, Nash, Worpel all had nights to forget.
Coaching - I understand the desire to set tasks and see if players can turn things around, but at 3/4 time, it's time to throw the magnets and see if you can unlock something.

I'm not sure what's happening in the midfield this year. It's gone from a relative strength to falling into a gapping maw. My fear is that we walk into next week's game expecting a win, but receiving a belting.

Reading through the game day thread, I'm not sure i agree with some of the narrative that we don't have elite talent, I just feel that there's a lot of learning going on (perhaps too much?). I wonder if we need to take a few things back to basics.

Onwards and upwards to next week...
A fair and accurate analysis amongst a lot of emotional and kneejerk responses. I'd say Chol tried hard but was often double teamed and not given any favours with our delivery to him or from the umpires. Made a few big tackles and bumps which were pleasing to see.

Thought Ginnivan competed hard with pressure and tackling.

Honestly, unless you were Finn Maginness, it was an awful night to be a forward with our midfield being absolutely destroyed. Maybe a defensive forward position could be Finn's go to moving forward?

Brutal draw.

I thought maybe a chance to beat Essendon Round 1.

Melbourne, Geelong, Collingwood & Gold Coast (Away) no chance.

I had all the faith in the world in Mitchell and in the rebuild. Tonight is the beginnings of me questioning both. That’s the first game in the last 2 and a bit years with basically zero to take away from. Only one of our players had over 20 possessions. Despite playing defence for what felt like 95% of the game the highest tackle count of any player of ours was 4. For a midfielder it was 3. Other than Worpel not a single midfielder had more than 2 clearances. This was as ugly as any Clarko 2017-21 performance.

All of those talking finals - at this rate we will be ecstatic if we see finals before it becomes a 19 team competition.

Sam is going to have to show a hell of a lot over the coming 4-5 months to demonstrate why the hell he deserves any kind of extension - and as it stands if he’s given anything more than a year then I’d love the club to be explaining why.
Unfortunately (fortunately?) I didn’t see the game (O/S) but I fear we’re going to be hard pushed to maintain our ‘flag in every decade since the ‘60s’ record.

Reading hawks social media has been rough tonight.

Nothing is ever as good or bad as it seems, as many have said we've improved on some scorelines from last year and that shows a lot.

Our midfield had its worst performance, probably the hardest we've been to watch since 2019.

Our players looked angry with eachother and frustrated at their skills.

Our coach looks defeated and angry.

Who will rally us?

North will be licking their chops for next week. We MUST be better.

We're a young side with 7 best 22 players missing, what do people expect to happen?

Blanck, CJ, Lewis, Breust, Wingard, Day, Watson and we will be a far better side.
10 goals better?
That's what it needs to be.

We are friggin miles off it and regardless of what Mitch thinks, this list is nowhere near it.
And those ins wouldn't have made a difference.

Yep, and after north I think we might have swans… I knew the injuries to Day, Blanck, Wingard, Cj and Lewis would hurt a lot. But I’m just so frustrated with the form of some players, particularly the mids, who offered up so much last year. They’ve dropped so far.

Hopefully can get them back on track.

Fair to say...lose to Norf and we're in a world of hurt

Look, the same Suns midfield has also destroyed a few other better midfields than Haw this season.

But it was the sheer ineptness when we got it that was more worrying. Simply too much fumbling or too long to move it before being rushed or tackled.

This means our cohesion is non existent and they are guessing where teammates are, looking up and around, and then getting crunched. And then you have the handballs flying to no one such as Nash over the head.

We are a mess in there at present and our cleanest centre work breakaway is if Meek can grab it and kick it forward. Not great.
