Autopsy Round 5, 2024 - Suns destroy hopeless Hawks

Sammy was pretty direct in his presser, looked completely exhausted and frustrated. Gonna be a tough time on the track this week for the players, and so it should.

Honestly?

I just listened - and were most certainly NOT 'well on top early'

We didn't 'go hard with free-flowing football in the 2nd quarter'

Either Sam is in complete denial or he's excusing the players.

I expected more honesty - and that was 70% of the team were absolutely putrid and they will have to work to play first team again.

I was hoping for fire and brimstone. We got platitudes and soft exxcuses.

Very poor from Sam I thought. He needed to show he saw the same issues as most of us. I hope he did.

EDIT: I watched the wrong one - my bad!!

Just got home from the game. That'll be the last time in a long while that I'll watch the hawks at that venue. Pouring money into that shithole of a fake club is not what i want to do with my hard earned.

The club has severly overatted the youth and our more established players completely. Sicily is a shell of him former self , why would anyone want to play for him when he can barely hold a mark or keep his feet. Newcombe is young but literally looks worse than when worpel was struggling a few years back. I've never bought into the Nash hype , I've always thought we would be a better team when he is replaced from the 22. But ward and mckenzie are so far off being competitive for a whole game to remove him.

Ramsden doesn't have the physicality. Butler has zero game sense . Cmac has bought into his own hype and is a one way runner at this stage. Ward and mckenzie are too vanilla/nice.

Props to finn and Moore. They're the absolute heart and soul of this team, throw in Frosty and massimo who have been great all year.

What did you listen to?

He said we were ratshit

Look, the same Suns midfield has also destroyed a few other better midfields than Haw this season.

But it was the sheer ineptness when we got it that was more worrying. Simply too much fumbling or too long to move it before being rushed or tackled.

This means our cohesion is non existent and they are guessing where teammates are, looking up and around, and then getting crunched. And then you have the handballs flying to no one such as Nash over the head.

We are a mess in there at present and our cleanest centre work breakaway is if Meek can grab it and kick it forward. Not great.
It’s a good point you raise about cohesion.

There is very little of it in the midfield. It looks like a bunch of country footballers playing who had a couple of practise sessions the fortnight before the season started.

We don’t get any easy ball out of the middle because we have to rely on brute force instead of cohesive chains of handballs.

At the end - yes, he said he was disappointed.
The first couple of minutes contained the quotes I wrote.

Post game GCS presser.

Maybe you missed the first bit? Dunno - I didn't get the vibe until over half way through that Sam was unhappy.
I'd have expected him to launch from the first second.

Anyhoo - I think we are all shell-shocked after that!

maybe it will sound different in the morning.

Cheers

I guess we saw it differently, I saw a guy who was extremely disappointed with what was dished out by his players and made it clear that there would be some hard sessions on the track this week. He looked totally dejected to me, don’t think I’ve seen him like that before from memory.

I was surprised that Sam was as realistic as he was. He saw it how I saw it. We are very poor and we're doing the basics poorly.

Expect a brutal week on the track and we'll be better for it

Scrimshaw, Mass, Meek, Finn were all great. Good to see Hustwaite get his hands on it.

But we are all over the shop. Has Sicily lost the passion to play with us? He seems like he has just about had enough.

Expects a few won't surivive the week. Good. We need it.

Also, dropping a game to Norf won't be the worst for our draft

The boys need a win and reading this thread so do the supporters.

And this comes back to my other beef about the lack of handball game. Almost all of our blokes want to kick the ****ing thing (all over the ground) but instead of getting it to the outside through quick hands and/or knocks ons when in traffic, we rather try and bulldoze our way through or rush a kick around a corner blindly.

Our handball game is so far off AFL standard it’s not funny.

Which is weird as our coach was one of the best users of the ball by hand I have ever seen.

The result was pretty much as expected.
Hopefully this post won't be deleted (yet again) but as I said pre-season (and got deleted), we will do well to win seven games this year, and I am certainly sticking with that.
Despite all the mis-guided optimism that seems to float all over here, the reality is we have a terrible list, and it is showing.
As a club with only two A grade players on the list, we just couldn't afford to lose one of them long-term, and even worse, the other is having his worst season thus far in memory.
There are so many players getting a game that are clearly not AFL standard at the moment, you couldn't expect anything else.
Still, the positives:
Hustwaite looked good, but was absolutely crucified by horrible, incompetent umpiring. Promising performance.
Meek looked good against one of the comps best ruckmen, I thought he at least broke even.
Scrimshaw is playing like the top 10 pick he is.
Amon putting together a great season, reckon at this stage he's in front in the B and F.
Impey also starting to get back to pre-knee reco form.

Of course, there are a lot more negatives, mostly centered around our horrible mid-field. Hawk coaches have learned an awful lot about certain players in Will Day's absence.
We will almost certainly be getting a top-three pick this year, they better get this one right, or we will be following in the shoes of Carlton's 25 year re-build.

Yes, I just watched it and he basically said it was the worst we played in a long time and that every aspect of our performance was poor.

Also said that training would be tough this week and if that means we lose a player with a cork then that’s stiff as the lighter runs we’ve had are not getting us right approach on game day.

Training reports this week going to be wonderful!

I am staggered at how bad it is.

It was just as bad under Clarko but I was hopeful it would improve under Mitch with a new list of players who were not pre programmed to mark and kick.

And yet it is still horrible

In 50 years I can't remember seeing a worse Hawthorn performance. That is all.
Except for the games v Essendon, Sydney, Geelong and Suns last year.
Throw in the first half v Port and Carlton for good measure.

We lost 34 - 101 v Suns last year with a better team on paper. Short memories around here.

The problem here and now is that we thought we might have improved but poor form and injury has destroyed that notion.

Question for Sam Mitchell. Why after Newcombe finished last week in beast mode would you start him on the bench? That is some dumb shit.
