Autopsy Round 5, 2024 - Suns destroy hopeless Hawks

Yes, I just watched it and he basically said it was the worst we played in a long time and that every aspect of our performance was poor.

Also said that training would be tough this week and if that means we lose a player with a cork then that’s stiff as the lighter runs we’ve had are not getting us right approach on game day.
Also said those types of games should be behind us. Makes me think he has well & truly over estimated our list & development. There should be some courageous conversations at the club this week. Both on & off the field.

Honestly?

I just listened - and were most certainly NOT 'well on top early'

We didn't 'go hard with free-flowing football in the 2nd quarter'

Either Sam is in complete denial or he's excusing the players.

I expected more honesty - and that was 70% of the team were absolutely putrid and they will have to work to play first team again.

I was hoping for fire and brimstone. We got platitudes and soft exxcuses.

Very poor from Sam I thought. He needed to show he saw the same issues as most of us. I hope he did.

Really? I didn't get it being weak at all. I just watched it - and he looked absolutely exhausted, disappointed and pissed off.

Some quotes:

- "I'm obviously disappointed - we're well past games like that"

- "We lost every aspect of that game - we lost the midfield battle, we couldn't win a contest in front of the ball, we couldn't stop them scoring at the other end. There was not a single aspect of that game that went in our favour"

- "We just have to be better than that [...] you're just not going to be able to compete against ... anyone [...] that's as bad as we've played in a long time"

These aren't mere platitudes.

I mean, we've watched this bloke for many years. This is the most disappointed I've seen him in a while. Looks like he aged about 100 years tonight:

He sounded let down by the team who did not do anything that was coached. Thats on players and coaches alike - some soul searching ahead no doubt.

Key quote: "If you're not looking under every rock [to improve performances] - I don't know how many players would say they're in good form at the moment, coaches too"

Props to my man Scrimmers though, he is having a heck of a season.

The talent and class he possesses really stood out tonight.

Just a very talented AFL footballer who gets the job done week in, week out.
Yes he has been good, but he really shouldn’t be playing as a key defender. He is being asked to play a role he will never truly be comfortable playing as he simply doesn’t have the size for it

We really have too many third-defender types ie Sicily, Scrim, Weddle, DGB, none of them can truly play key position. That is what we are struggling with

yea but players never pay the price, the coach does and unfortunately he looks like he will.

I totally agree that he his a natural half back flanker / 2nd key defender but he is doing an excellent having to defend guys who have a lot more size.

As you say we are crying out for a KPD, it takes away one our main strengths of attacking intercept backline players if we are forced to have Scrimmers and Sicily playing lock down on key forwards.

Am sure it's been mentioned already but Sam Mitchell was visibly rattled for the first time I've seen him coaching. Could've been because he was coaching from the boundary, but was hoping that level of anger would be transferred into an increased level of input. But nup

We've been blessed at various stages by having teams filled with not just great players, but players who were the best of their generation. There's no guarantee our group will develop into the best players to play the game, this seems to be the reality we are being confronted with after the initial optimism of a new coach, and a bunch of new talent.

I'll cheer for them come what may, I only ask we find a way to bring our best game on any given day, everywhere, every time. As a team our best is good enough...not our best is ...well...not much of anything.

Games are won and lost in the midfield, ours just isn’t good enough at the moment.
Pair this with a severe lack of effort (we have lost the tackle count in all 5 games this year) and here we are.
Out of Worpel, Nash, Newcombe, McKenzie and Ward, will any become true A graders?

In 50 years I can't remember seeing a worse Hawthorn performance. That is all.
Just quietly i rate all our games this year as pretty much as bad I've seen. Even 97 when we finished second last we were only a few games outside the 8. But with that said when we're on, we're very good, so just need to find a way to tap into the good stuff.

Games like this are very character building.. completely dominated across the entire ground. Not that this is anything new, but extremely poor tonight. I wasn’t sure how our skills could possibly be worse.. yet here we are. Really disappointed in our effort, especially off the last half against the pies last week. To come out with this shit.. should hace just stayed home.

Based on what we have dished up so far this season, North should go in next week confident.. I can’t believe yet again how bad our midfield has turned this year.. some of those numbers and stats are really unacceptable..

Tells ya next Sunday I”ll be thinking long and hard how I wish to spend the afternoon.. I always go.. every single week but **** me… can’t say I am excited..

Elaborate further.

We've won 4.5 quarters compared to their 3.

Both pretty meaningless statistics.

North have been in total control of a game and in a winning postion.

They should have wrapped up the game vs Freo in the 2nd Qtr.

And here you are slagging them off and acting like we’re miles apart.

Are you trolling or did you watch the wrong press conference.

Based on CD rankings Worps was ranked 2 in the league before tonight which will obviously change. In my view Hustwaite replaces Nash role, Newcombe will come good and McKenzie has shown good signs. Whole midfield down tonight. We need Day back badly but does he need to start off half back until full fitness back
