Weird rant.
My observation was based on all of the dissent calls & non-calls I've witnessed since the rule was introduced.
Some umpires will invoke the rule if a player points at the replay on the big screen, others don't. Some umpires call dissent if a player raises their voice at them, others will just ignore it.
The rule should be 100% either way.
It's not weird at all. How the rule was umpired when it was first introduced has no bearing on how it's umpired today. There's been an obvious change and softening since it first came in.
Pointing at the screen, or telling an ump to watch the replay has been confirmed as dissent. If you're just pointing without saying anything, then the ump has to see it. Sometimes the ump is standing in front of the player, setting the mark, and the player is pointing behind their back.
Raising their voice? Would need examples of this. Can't say I recall seeing that called.

Yup.. really. Since Carlton’s last flag… I was born, took my first steps, lost my virginity, got my driver’s license, finished uni, got married, had a kid. Carlton supporters should be a little humble. You haven’t achieved anything. At least in my lifetime.
I died and got resurrected between Melbourne's last 2.

Surely you have to review a ******* goal before you can pay another free kick and count the previous goal.

How many times are these umps gonna bend over backwards to give Carlton the win ?
That would be bending over backwards to give Freo a win, in reality.

Carlton were on the receiving end of bad call after bad call which cost us at least a few goals. Nice to see it even out at the death.

Did you miss your lot's history, 1964 is thirty years before our last flag, in which we won 8 Premierships!! Love how chirpy Dee's supporters are after just one flag in 60 years! My team owes me nothing, but believe me if we do manage to land a flag sometime soon, you and your bitter fellow Carlton haters will definitely get very sick of us. You reckon Collingwood know how to celebrate......

And after all that, it wasn't touched anyway.

In a freak moment, Fyfe got his hand to the ball as it was about to be kicked, but not before it hit the boot. Who knows if it brushed someone's hair or not.

100% not a touched ball. And not "the umpire called touch on the MMM audio" either.

And no grassy knoll. Just Fremantle losing.

Forget about the umpires, Pearce lost this game with his kick down the line with 3 mins left. Had a player on to his right which would have opened Carlton up. Dumb decision to go down the line instead of thinking in the moment.

Still struggling to find in the record books where Hipwood won a Coleman.

Is that the year he kicked 58 goals?
That is some achievement isn't it. Remember when Sideshow was kicking high 50's early on his career ;)

Makes you wonder why he only managed 29 last year in a season Carlton finally played finals.

As I said, he'll regress and normality will back in order as we saw in yesterday's game v Fremantle.

it was touched off aishs arm, but until afl get nfl type of reviews these are going to be and have been missed every single game ever. umpires dont have the luxury of a review so they go with their gut

Yeah I didn't think there was anything but a brush on an arm - maybe.

While we had missed calls either way, I think Freo has a right to be pissed off. Not going to take that away from them.

Continuing on with it, though, sealed it. Brain fade.

Sucks but move on and win the next one.

On the slo-mo replay I thought the ball might have brushed Jackson's bicep. Can't expect an umpire to see that though. Not the first clutch goal Cotters has nailed. As for the dissent free, well we don't know what the player said to the ump. They have limits.

There is far better vision of it bouncing off Aish (I think it is Aish) and clearly deviating in the air.

I’d genuinely love to know what exactly was said to warrant a free kick.

I honestly can’t imagine any combination of words that in the heat of the moment would lead to an umpire giving a match winning free kick in front of goals.

The umpire needs to harden up.

I’d like to think an umpire would lead with something simple like ‘That’s enough. I’ll pay a free for dissent’ before getting all hurt and compounding an obviously poorly judged decision the goal before.

10+ Freo players went up saying touched. The umps all knew they made the wrong call.

It was like edging the ball to second slip. Umpire gives it not out. Bowler says you’re a cheat and then gets fined his whole match payment. It was those levels of soft by the umpire.
... or - you know - the bowler doesn't call the umpire a cheat, and gets to keep his match payment?

I'm fascinated by this thought process.

Do you fully and sincerely think that Clark had no other option than to open his mouth? Not, couldn't control himself; not, absolutely had to say something; genuinely had no choice. Action-reaction. Ump does something he doesn't like; ump gets attacked verbally.

So just to clarify: the umpire missed the touched mark call, he missed the other umpire calling it touched, he then decided to pay a spot free after the goal because a Freo player told him he missed the call. Is that right? Fmd that stinks really bad. Poor guy must think it's the AUL or something

I never said what Clark did was acceptable. I’m saying it’s a response to a howler of a decision. He’s penalised accordingly but he doesn’t open his mouth if the correct decision is made. EVERY Freo player is calling touched. EVERY Carlton player looks sheepish.

So, my analogy is accurate. Often the biggest penalty is because of a massive mis call and the subsequent reaction to that. It’s not acceptable. There’s penalties in place. He paid the full price.

Unsure what you’re trying to suggest I’m saying. My post is what often happens in sport. It’s a reality. Not some one eyed view.

I do think the umpire could’ve taken 2 seconds to assess it all, perhaps asked him to calm down, but he blew his whistle instantly. Without knowing exactly what was said, that’s his decision. From a Freo perspective he just doubled down on the initial poor decision. That’s extremely hard to take.

I like analogies. Here’s another. It’s like taking $500 to the casino. You grind away playing safe. Work your way up to $300 having a good night. The night is about to end. So, you think I’ll just put all my profit on a bet. $300 bet and you lose. You double down and just bet the whole $500 and lose. Now you leave with nothing and lose it all in the last 2 bets. That’s what it feels like ONLY the casino is the AFL and you should never bet against the house when it comes to Carlton.
