Cook did nothing on the weekend. Schoenberg was far more impactful. I'd also even have Borlase ahead of Cook. He had one shocking clanger but I think Borlase has been pretty damn good. His effort is great and has good smarts and is pretty good in marking contests. He's also got a lot of strength for his age. I doubt he gets a game this year though I fortunately.

pretty sure each of the previous 2 years our best 22-23 have been pretty well defined early in the season.

2022 was pretty heavily in flux. 2021 was in between where there was starting to be a bit of transition, especially in the back-end.

So, 2021 we had 10 players play 20+, 12 between 15-19, and 6 between 5-14 games. So there is mostly a best 22 there, but it's also got a bit of flux as the year went on. Bit of a hard year to really gauge, owing to a lack of genuine options on our list early on and we begun to go kid-heavy.

2022 is a lot more of a mess: 8 players would play 20+, 11 would play between 15-19 and 14 would play between 5-14 games (with most being in the 11-14 bracket). We had a general idea on 14-15 spots throughout the year, but there was a fair bit of transition/mucking about- especially with being pretty light-on with injuries. We also had an interesting moment where we had 2 100+ gamers fall out of our best 22.

This year, we look like a young team who is likely overperforming (or to their current ceiling) at the moment. 22 over 10 games, 1 over 5 so far. A large factor is just how healthy we've been this year - we've had **** all injuries/suspensions compared to the rest of the competiton. However, there may also be an element of we've decided on which kids we want to build around. After all, we've been less stupid and panicky with our younger charges this year, seeing we've been a lot more willing to ride out the quieter to outright bad games with Thilthorpe, Soglio, Pedlar, Fogarty, Jones and Butts. Even Rachele and Sholl could have easily been axed in previous years when we ingested the stupid juice and overrated one mistake or two. Backing that up is we only had three players who played 11-14 games last year play more than 5 this year (Thilthorpe, Rachele, Milera and Sholl), with most looking like their card has been all but stamped as depth only.

We don't select or position based on what's best for the future, it's purely based upon the result of the game in question.

Correct, though what you've hit on is just how a coach functions, and not something unique to Adelaide. The only currency a coach has to keep his job is wins, regardless if a team is actively tanking, or gunning for a flag premiership. There is a very recent example of this occurring at another club, Mitchell, O'Meara and Gunston played every game they were fit for Hawthorn last year, despite the club planning to move them on in the off-season. Another example was Collingwood fire sale at the end of 2020, where despite planning on getting rid of players as a means to alleviate cap issues, Treloar, Phillips and Stevenson played 39/57 games that year, with the vast majority of missed games being injury related. Even Grundy in 2022 played every game he was fit for, despite Collingwood having buyers remorse with that deal from the moment the ink dried.

This is also seen with the frequency of FA/trade departures having held down a best 22 spot prior, even though it looks very likely they're gone in the off-season.

An unexpected win here would be massive for our club.

Doubts about our ability to win on the road eradicated overnight. Belief through the roof. Game changer. To beat them on the G... means we can beat anyone anywhere (except Geelong at Kardinia Park but that's a given).

Good thing we wouldn’t have to play a final there ever…. Or would we?

I don’t know ever the rules are. Guess it depends on which round of finals, potential crowd etc.

But freo played a final there.

And won.
I think we’d get enough people to have an mcg game. I hope like **** that we’d be classified as a big club and have it at the G

Been to exactly one MCG game, I think it's scarred me from ever returning.
My last one was the draw v Pies.

Awesome comeback game.

Just reading some articles. The upgrades are meant to help push their case for home finals.

Reading between the lines, they’d have Buckley’s vs a vic side. Door is open to send a hapless interstate side there though.

Lucky we’re not the sort of club that gets shunted off to shitty regional grounds!

One of the games we won't forget!
I think I’ve told the story, I was preoccupied by my son towards the end and I thought we were 5pts down.
I was the only one up celebrating the win as the ball went through 😆

I was working in Melbourne & stayed with my sister who joined me at the game. Dad came over & 1st time he had been to the MCG since the Olympics!

Funniest thing is my sister's now husband was also at the game... before she met him & he is an Essendon supporter.

Maybe if it's 5th vs 8th or 6th vs 7th?

Would we bother sending a team over?
They made the Bulldogs play us at the MCG in the 2015 Finals and they had 4 fans at the time. Surely us and Geelong would get the MCG upgrade.

Collingwood, along with Essendon and Sydney, are the only teams a Nicks coached side hasn't beaten.

As a club - we have had the worst record against Collingwood. We are 15 wins and 32 losses against them and 0-3 in finals.

For the record we have a winning record against 10 AFL clubs (GC, Brisbane*, St.Kilda, GWS, Richmond, Melbourne, Sydney, Freo, North and Carlton).

Our losing records are as follows:

Port 26-27
Hawks 22-25
Essendon 19-23
Bulldogs 22-27
West Coast 24-30
Geelong 21 - 28
Collingwood 15-32

Maybe our fixture requests in future should be to play Collingwood in June...

(For those without long enough memories, Collingwood lost 14 consecutive June games from R10 1996, finally breaking the hoodoo on the last June weekend of 1999)

(FWIW we have a 2-4 record against the Pies in June games, both wins in our premiership years and their June drought years)
