Autopsy Good win against Tricky opposition.

Thought Stephens had some really good moments (and a couple of bad).

But he backed into a couple packs and attacked the ball more than he had previously.
There was a knock on Stephens’ courage - which was unfair. He doesn’t shirk the contest.

Still looks really down on himself when he makes a mistake (like the air swing today) - but it means he cares. A lot.

I’m still hoping he stays.

I actually think that was our best win of the season.

Regardless of key injuries. Gulden tagged out of the game. Gold Coast out-strategizing us in the first half. Lost all the momentum. Clearly had no ruck. Such high stakes for both teams. Gold Coast throwing the kitchen sink at us.

The swans held tough and kept fighting. 👍🏻👍🏻

Parker and Mills are either injured or just poor?

Parker looks old suddenly and Horse never seems to want to move him, loves him to a fault .

Not sure what role Mills is asked to play seems to change a lot during games where as last year he was in the thick of it and our best player easily . Occasionally back but basically in the middle

I don't know if 'courage' is the right term. But he definitely had issues with his appetite for the contest in his first couple of years.

I thought he was great with that today though.

A few players that caught my eye:
  • Really liked stephens attack on the footy, disposal was a bit erratic however.
  • *ing loving McLean at the moment, plays for the badge and gives it all every week.
  • Due for a good Hayward game, really efficient in front of goal.
  • Rowys best game in a while, flew the flag in the 3rd.
  • Heeney was fantastic today, couldn't have asked for much more. Marked well, kicked for goal and inside 50 well.
  • Lloyd and Blakey had great games in our back half.
  • Really happy for Roberts with his first goal.

Still feels like in the grand scheme of things we are papering over the cracks with how we are playing.

However that second half cant go unnoticed. The self belief has been building in the playing group the past few weeks. When a game has gone against the grain, we have started to wrestle back momentum a lot better, just like today.

Our stoppage work really lifted, defended really well when the ball went into our d50, and we are really making teams pay as of late. Really efficient again going inside 50 our forward line is humming. I agree that warner had an off day, but the thing that cant go unnoticed was just his appetite for the footy and pushed through well with some nice goals. Rowbottom flew the flag in the third term, brilliant game. Lloyd and Blakey were great down back and McClean is finding form.

Really proud on how we turned it around in the second half. We were 15th a few weeks ago and now 6th, lets enjoy the win.

Papering over the cracks as in overall or the game specifically today?

I will have to respectfully disagree with your assessment if its based on today as that is the way GCS have successfully dismantled us in the past.

Last month and a bit has been as good as anyone in the comp.

anyone who plays afl has to have courage so the afl player soft isn't exactly soft anyway.

If the ball is kicked to him or in contest and he is there he goes in for it

But if he has to tackle or stop someone it's very very weak.

I'm hoping we sign him , I think he belongs overall

Needs to get less time in no man's land

its why we get smashed in contested possessions

really need parker and mills to lift

theyre MIA every 2nd game

2 months ago I thought if we went into next season relying on him up front, we were in trouble.

He's improving at a rate of knots.

Believes now? he stays involved and is consistent , not a star at all but a very good player .

Now sign him

Definitely overall, not based on today. We were much better around the ball in the second half.

no one else has the speed or confidence to hunt the ball and get a clean clearance

Yeah that's a concern as Paps is hit and miss and we do need him forward against better sides

Looked out if it in the first half but hung in on the scoreboard. Much better in the second half but we were let off a bit with inaccurate goal kicking from the Suns in the last quarter.
Heeney , Hayward and McLean were excellent. To be honest the forward line performed well and if one dropped off then another player stood up. The straight kicking makes a huge difference. Francis and McCartin had decent games considering how quick the ball came in.
Stephens really is an enigma inside a riddle , at times he looks like he is a natural and looks like he belongs at this level. Then he flaps at that ball in the goal square with his non dominant hand and half way through it decides to have a crack with with his left hand and misses it. And there just seems to be that lack of awareness at times of what's going on around him. Still not convinced one way or another if he will make the grade.
Barring any injuries Campbell should replace him next week.
Gulden should learn a lot from getting tagged and it's a sign of respect that they put one of the best mids in the comp on him.
Couldn't see us winning five on the trot after the first ten games or getting anywhere near the eight. Regardless what happens next week we should still be in with a chance of the eight against Melbourne.
If Gold Coast do have three top players coming through their academy this year and supposedly more the year after they could start to make the finals consistently. They already have a great core of players.
