AFL Toast R14: Win against the Saints!

Great win last night. Not many better things than seeing your team win on a Friday night. Really sets up the weekend.

Loved the games of Redman, Caldwell, 2MP, McGrath, Hind and Laverde. And Mass on debut. Good foot skills.

Is very clear to me that Ham should not play AFL again (for Ess anyway). With players coming back from injury, he is first out. Ham, Cutler and Waterman all shouldnt be on our list next year. Would love us to find another running creative type off half back. We lost McKenna and Saad. Maybe McGrath can give us that. He clearly better suited to defence.

Also not sure we can get away without playing a proper KPD and really want us to get games into Reid. Having said that and maybe it is the work Rance has been doing with us (is he still part time for us?) but Laverde and Ridley seem to be putting a lot more work into their opponents eg more pushing them under the ball and out of position. Just something we seem better at in contests.

Makes a massive difference having proper forward structure with Jones and Stringer there to help out 2MP. We do need to kick the ball more to 15 metres out from goal rather than right to the square eg the Durham kick for 2MP just before half time. Give our talls and crumbers more of a chance that way. And we will be a lot better with a bigger bodied Langford around the ball and Snelling putting on forward pressure.

And lastly, what on earth was going on with some of the umpiring is beyond me. The inconsistency between push in the back, holding the ball and dropping the ball was crazy.

Merrett looked off the pace tonight, was he tagged?
Lets not complain about Merrett just because he isnt getting as much of the footy

His defensive work looks way better and hes playing a more team orientated role with less focus on the stats sheet

Lets support someone trying to change the group

He still has plenty of work in this area and some of the chases did seem half hearted

But he sure is keeping 5m defensive side of his mid alot more in transition which i think is the important thing

It’s a huge credit to the team that our bottom player or two on the night (e.g. Ham) were a 6/10 output. Virtually everyone made a contribution and nobody played a stinker. Keep it coming.

Very good point. :thumbsu:

Also a failed to mention something else i noticed

His natural instinct was to go back then almost as he was in the process of doing so, it was like he remembered the coach wants us to go forward at every chance we can and he changed half way through the process and took territory

He use to get alot of 1,2s when he went backwards so it quickly increases his disposals aswell

Cotchin changed the fabric post 2016 for Richmond by doing leas running around peoples backs to stat pad and also to defend which resulted in winning games. Almost switched once the brownlow medal box was ticked

Moving Hepp from HB has improved structure and ball movement instantly.

Hopefully we stick with this and move away from the side ways kicking thing.

Tone was set in the first 3 minutes when St Kilda were existing their back 50 and McGrath left his man to attack the player with the ball.

Any other game this season he would have folded back to defrnd his own man.
This is spot on. You could just tell they were up for it. Total opposite from previous week when Carlton walked it down for a goal.

Can’t help but feel we are lucky saints didn’t put membrey behind the ball in the last quarter when they where 30ish down really could of turned the game

They needed to kick goals. All putting Membrey behind the ball in the second quarter did was stop the rot, they couldn’t put any scoreboard pressure on us during that period of time.

God bless the Saints they rocked up and thought it was just gonna happen.

Which is Maddie’s Match…
Ok, that is one game though. Give them another, who cares, Tigers don't need it financially, but the Sainits probably do.

We have how many games each year attached to something? ANZAC day, Country game, Dreamtime? What else am i missing? Plus the supposedly block buster games against the Bloos.

The Spud game meant nothing to me from a marketing perspective. It was just us vs them.

Make it mean something to both teams involved. Nathan Burkes speech was from the heart, Tim's, although well intended as he would have known Spud, meant less to the team/supporters as Spud has no history with us.

Could you imagine a game in Sheeds honour, with us playing Norf??? Absolutely meaningless, apart from the marshmallows that is.

It’s been mentioned a few times but was last night the first time we’ve implemented the outside 5m approach to maning the mark?
It was something I noticed. I also watched some of the VFL game today and we did it there too. Might have happened on occasion in the past but seems an intentional change of tactic by us.

As far as I understand it this game is always hosted by St Kilda. We’re just the 2022 opponent. Last time it was Melbourne. By rotating it it’s very much about the Saints raising money for the Danny Frawley Centre for Health and Wellbeing, not the individual clubs or the contest.

If we hosted a Kevin Sheedy match it would be fine to play in any round with any opponent. The windsock game vs West Coast, marshmallow game vs North, GWS and Richmond are obvious, etc. He coached 27+ games against most clubs and there are memories with each of them.

There are a few games that change each time. Clash for Cancer is different every year, was originally Melbourne but has been played against other clubs. Good Friday rotates too. I’m sure there are others but they tend to be less high profile than the marquee games you listed.

Well, I suppose that's my point in a way. I don't even recall a Spuds game before this round. It's an important issue, so let's make it seem so from an AFL perspective and make it a marquee match, not some token match.

I will disagree however in regards to a Sheedy game in his honour. I could not care less about how many times he coached against a side. He played 250 odd games for them and coached us for 27 years.

I don't care about a few marshmallows thrown (if that mattered, we would still vs them on Good Friday), or a scarf waved during one match (despite the fact it has become synonymous for our WC clash). It is about us v Tiges. That is where the history lies.

IMO, it should be the same for Spuds game. Both teams and supporters really invested in the outcome...not only for the 4 points, but for Spud.

Is not Dodoro the guy identifying the talent?
Less and less the last 4-5 years from my understanding but officially since end of 2020 I believe Rob Forster-Knight (with input from Rutten) are responsible for draft selections.

Now how much Dodoro is still involved will depend on who you ask but I’ve noticed a distinct difference in the styles of player we have taken since 2020.

Kudos to our supporters. No matter what our supporters always turn up.

I was in the medallion club lvl 2 and noticed there was a lot more bombers supporters than Aints
Same around aisle 43 up top, I reckon we outnumbered them 4 to 1 at least.

I picked a hell of year to start going to more away games!
