totally agree, i don't think we would be stuffed with another player at his price point.
Not sure price has much to do with it, you have to pay to get good players. Nice if we could develop our own inside mids, but that doesn't seem likely. Having said that he was no.3 draft pic and we haven't had one of them in a long long time.

remember how glorious our forward 50 pressure was before stand, kick in, soft tackle and deliberate oob rules came in

was peak AFL šŸ˜
watching old finals pre stand rule is funny as **** cos u just see cotchin abusing the hell out of moving around on the mark, i can see why they wanted to change the rule but i don't think they did it right

Id take number 3 draft withought blinking.

Out - Graham, Cotchin, Mansell, Miller, Grimes
In - Coulthard, Nankervis, Short, Clarke, Cumberland
I would find a spot for Brown if Grimes goes out.

But we all know he won't.

Its a good problem to have though. Shows our core for next season is still good enough to compete, we are not relying on veterans and a new coach wont just keep rewarding average players because they helped us win a grand final four season ago.

Gone: Jack, Cotchin
Going: Pickett?
Probably not best 22 next year: Mcintosh, Grimes, Graham, Miller

It would be if we had players coming up to replace them, but instead we are just progressively getting worse. Generally that just happens until you catch a break, or bottom out.

taranto and hooper aren't really on that crazy a wage. plenty of spud hbf's on more than them

if meehan didnt take out Lunch and a few others we'd all be jerking off over Hopper and taranto trades while sitting top of the ladder

$5m+ over 7 years is pretty sizeable.....

From my understanding the club offered BOTH players the same contract @ $750k per season.

For every dollar we won on the Taranto deal, we lose two on the Hopper deal & trade. A genuine WTF moment to why the club was so eager to please

We went from laughing at Carlton over paying Cerra , to 12 months later paying more for an older, more injury prone & less effective Hopper in both wage & trade assets.

I wanted Cerra at the time & unsure why the club chickened out then decided to overpay a year later. This move will look worse as time goes on.

For those who watched it on TV and can't see the plays happening off screen.

We are not far off it. I was expecting a 5 goal loss and that's what we got, but we dictated terms for huge patches of the game and just a few things going against us in the last (including some fairly ordinary umpiring) cost us in the end. I think we might have mucked up the sub but it was a gamble that would have looked genius if it worked. In any case, the game last week against the Hawks was way worse. We played like a 5-8 side and Dusty is entering god mode for the first time in about 2 years.

I walked away disappointed to have coughed up a 20 point lead, but with more positives than negatives.

We didn't lose because of our key backs. No one could expect three forwards to kick 16.0 between them. No one. If it was 10.6 then we almost pinch the game. We set up specifically to guard the opposition's 40m (not a typo) which meant until the last Q (when we lost the clearances due to Gawn dominating) they were continually taking marks about 50m out, and close to the boundary. That's a low % shot in anyone's books. At the game sitting high up, it was very obvious to see this. And it would have worked if not for their freakishly accurate kicking. Melt all you want about Grimes but he was actually not bad 1 on 1 when they tried to bomb it in deep. It was when they marked further out from goal that he and the other backs got caught out.

Where we lost it was not having a key forward at CHF. Again, you probably can't see this on the TV because it's usually zoomed in on the ball carrier, but we continually kicked it to the hot spot only for no one to be there. Jack battled manfully but his pace isn't there to make use of the quick ball coming in off a turnover. So if you want to know where we lost it, we lost it because we didn't have another marking forward.

Just on Melbourne, they didn't pay us respect early when they had Petracca forward. We cut them up because they didn't have their best onballers in the guts.

They played like a 4th placed team but they are gonna struggle playing an away final against the Brions or Port.

We played like a 5-8 placed team and should we get there and meet Melbourne in a semi well that would be a good matchup.

I thought we were pretty decent as well. Not sure what all the hand wringing is about.

We donā€™t have any tall forward representation.
So Iā€™m not sure what else we can really do.

We lost Lynch and found out what we already knew before the season started, which was that if he went down we were stuffed.

If anyone should own our current situation itā€™s Matt Clarke for wasting our first rounders on flankers.

Hopper is injury prone?

2018: 21/24 games.
2019: 23/26 games
2020: 17/17 games.
2021: 23/24 games.
2022: 1 major injury missed Rounds 2-17.
2023: 13/19 games

How is that injury prone?

Nankervis should not be captain next year. His incident which led to his suspension was inexcusable as we have now gone up against Melbourne without a ruckman to contest against the might of Gawn.
Big sexy captain
Bakes VC

From outside looking in ive always felt both nank and grimes looked awkward Capt no doubt internally they tick the boxes ,,,,but with a new coach itā€™s a line in the sand moment to est a new leadership team and Iā€™m hoping the likes of baker and Dan rioli are anointed

Hopper just needs re programing he gets the ball ok , he needs to focus on foreword movement and also raising a sweat by moving with the ball , he has some tricks but heā€™s too quick to dish off a lot of useless handball . TT has evolved his game and fitted in well , and we should compliment him by re shaping the midfield
