It's not complicated. Either they don't rate anyone they can get on a 6 month deal or we've packed our salary cap so tight we can't afford it.
Could easily be something other than the two reasons you've mentioned. So, yeah, it could be complicated - or at least not as obvious as you make it seem.

yet again another example of why the crows are just the dumbest footy club going around..

alright, we get it, you morons only want to take 1 player at the most.. but even then, wouldnt the smart thing to do be to atleast move one of Milera or hinge to the LTI and give yourself the option of taking two players just incase someone decent unexpectedly slips through to the second pick?..

these ****heads are too smart for their own good.

then.. the coach comes out just over two weeks ago and says, when asked about what we could be considering for the MSD, “we need a small forward”..

yet now we hear the rumours are we are linked to a small running defender who hasnt even been considered by anyone else or even made it anywhere near any of the draft experts top 25 players available.. probably Hamish again trying to be some sort of drafting guru enigma who wants to look all tricky and “against the grain”..

what the **** do we need another small running defender for?.. another bloke to spend the next 6 to 18 months rotting in the SANFL while waiting for David mookay to finally **** off into retirement?.. WTF is wrong with this club?..

we need a high pressure, xfactor, speedy small forward that loves to tackle hard, hits the scoreboard and gets a heap of possessions.. its one massively obvious hole in our list and the best player available in this MSD is the young indigenous lad Thorne.. if we dont take him then we need some new talent scouts.

maybe hamish has looked into Thorne and decided he doesnt come from a good enough family?..

melt and rant over.

Surely with Gibbs and Stengle on the inactive list and Milera, Talia and Hinge unliley to play this year, we have 4 potential spots to fill, even if Murray is one of them.

What's the hard of giving ourselves the option, then if we don't use it all well and good. But what if things don't go as expected and we have 2 kids we like there? We're left hanging for no reason.

If we offered the club a free ticket for a 1 in 50,000 chance to win $1000, they'd probably turn it down.
Gibbs and Stengle gone. Murray in.

Milera and Hinge out for the season confirmed.
Crouch and Talia unlikely to be seen this year.

Just as well we are so stacked with talent we couldn't possibly fit any more in...

God we are dumb.

Not too surprising that we only opt for one. The only thing that could be from here is if we go for Parnell over Davis. After all, we put way too much effort into Davis.

Mind you Parnell does serve more of a need, seeing Milera ended up wiped out for a second season. So it's possible I guess. Davis is a bit much of muchness but coverage isn't the worst possible option.

Is Thorne from Tasmania? Ex basketballer? Small slow inside midfielder? Third tall defender? Half back flanker?

No?

We don't want you at the AFC.

Why am I reminded of Sauce, refusing to play SANFL finals (despite having qualified), lest he get injured and not picked up by GWS?
It's the same common sense approach

A club's goals and a player's career priorities don't always coincide

It's a shame the SANFL club's don't get the money for having a player drafted any more. Used to be $50k from memory.

Now is it pooled between all clubs? Which is unfair. Or disappeared altogether?

i dont think there is actually a need to take davis.. I dont think anyone else is even gonna bother grabbing him..

so we just leave him on the table and he simply keeps playing for us in the SANFL as he already is..

we’d probably never give him a run in the AFL 22 this season even if he was on our list!.. so we might as well just leave him in the Sanfl side and grab him at the end of the year if he does show something..

You can never have enough mids capable of winning the football, and there is some physical upside left in Davis too. It's a very Nicks profile when it comes to midfielders really.

Quite likely he doesn't ever play a game (let alone this year), but that's the same deal for nearly everyone in this draft. Most are there to either to pad out depth or a project player that could be worthwhile in 1-2 years. This is really the bottom of the rookie draft territory that we're pretending is worth more than that.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that if we didn't use our one rookie pick to formalize getting Gibbs off the books, Davis would have been our rookie pick. We haven't exactly been shy in our interest at all. If you want to be conspiratorial, you could argue we're preparing for life without someone.

It’s a horrible look that just adds to how bad the MSD affects competitions below the AFL with no reward or remuneration to the affected club. Sturt lost by under a goal and with it pretty well any hope of finals.....but hey, one player puts himself before his teammates and everyone else. FMD
He wants to try and make a career of it.

No problems

Wouldn't mind another development ruck because our other mid 20 yo one isn't going to make it unfortunately. What do we have to lose?

It's possible Davis was only ever coming here as a top up player. Not convinced we take him.

He jumped at the chance as he thought it could help his chances of being drafted by anyone, not just us. Both parties saw it mutually beneficial.

If he doesn't get taken he still has the back half of an SANFL season to press his claims.

Do you think you have any idea what you’re talking about or just throwing darts blindly?
It’s not a mystery official, I know the bloke, spoken to him many times, he also supports an AFL club pretty closely so no, I don’t think he has club blinkers on. I find it funny that as soon as SANFL supporters argue against a myopic AFL dictum we supposedly don’t want the player to get a crack at being the best he can be, of course all clubs want that for their players and do their best to provide that pathway, it’s when it’s done in such a way that it totally undermines any club outside the AFL mid season that is the issue.

As for Bernie Vince and cricket.....FMD, now your blindly pinging more arrows than Duursma.
If the official had any brains he'd see how good it is for the club to do right by Johnson and do whatever it can to get him drafted, be rapt for him and wish him well.

If Johnson's time with us finishes positively where will he most likely end up after his AFL career finishes, whenever that will be? Versus if we give him a bake on the way out for letting the club down

McAdam and Johnson are two from what sounds like a bit of an unknown talent Hot bed. A nice in for the club there. Don't burn that bridge.

A nice reputation to have that Sturt is a place for players who have missed out on being drafted to go to to reignite their career. A coach recently out of the AFL system, knows the ins and outs. Go there instead of <insert any other club>. Johnson goes but long term we gain...?

Or we could pettily whine about him missing a game the week before the draft and crack the shits and forego all positives

We are going in with 1 pick at this stage. Are our recruiters and list management lazy?

You need to understand the list flexibility. We have Butts and Strachan (probably) that will be coming off the rookie list onto the senior list and we need spots for our other players. Will need to push a few players to the rookie list end of the year so that we can take enough picks in the national draft.

Imagine the melts in this place if Port take Freeman.

We are going to pass on the pick all together, gonna back our boys in and say we need the player we already have on the list to make impact at SANFL level

Yeah, I'm not sure why we assumed we brought him over to draft him. If we knew we wanted to draft him, better we kept him in Tasmania and didn't show our hand.

I think we were just giving him an opportunity to play in a better comp, with no guarantees beyond that.
