Carlton played more difficult games to start the season.

Bit of hyperbole.

Brisbane win wasn't much to write home about
Struggled more V Richmond
Were completely smashed by Sydney whereas Essendon put up an effort against them
Lost to Adelaide (who the Bombers beat)
Lost to Collingwood (who the Bombers didn't lose to)
Lost to Geelong (bad in hindsight)
Dees win (bottom 10 side)
Port have struggled as of late
Beat Freo in Melb whereas we smashed the Dogs who beat your mob
Both beat GWS
Both beat North

With the difference being they beat the Suns at home.

So this idea that Carlton have somehow done it so much harder when Essendon have not lost to bottom 10 sides that the Blues have (Crows, Pies) and with both teams having had a smashing each, has been quite a stretch. Not to mention that the ladder changes all the time, and Brisbane will be a harder team for us in Round 23 than they were against the Blues in Round 0.

Nevertheless, we were predicted to finish below the teams we've accounted for, and most of those teams are lower because we added to their loss tally. We didn't go into this year expecting to win the flag, but we've done better than expected.

Essendons quality of inside 50 entries sucked dogs balls it was like how Blues were three years ago.
Essendon probably played their best game of the year and could not stand up against a well drilled team

Essendon not far away they will be a serious contender in 2-3 years just not yet. Strong midfields will pick them apart

To be fair to the Dons

They miss Parish a lot imo and Draper, yes Blues missing players , but still.

They also dont give up, they haven't beaten much, but they also dont throw in the towel

Parish is like schrodinger's cat, we are both better off with and without him. We need more mids, but we also haven't been losing games from the midfield. Our current mix prevents other teams from getting ascendance from there, Caldwell and Durham being so defensively sound. But that style prevents us from getting ascendance there too. Parish's addition would allow us to potentially dominate from there, but opens the door for other teams to dominate through the space he leaves sheep dogging the ball.

We played pretty badly. Not close to our best of the year, but neither were you. Bit of a fizzer but probably expected given neither of us are in hot form despite our ladder positions.

Lol. Now do Essendon with the same glass half empty shallow analysis.

Could you be even more in denial ? You remind me of the poms cricket team . Essendon were moral victors tonight .

Durham is a heck of a goer especially. Ultra competitive. The only concern might be if your midfield is a bit TOO defensive, as you alude to. Surely a balance can be found though.

Maybe, but the game played out like all our games this year. Domination of field territory, not taking chances, not conceding much from center bounces. We haven't been lit up by any stars this year really.
You're probably not keeping Cripps and Walsh to 20 touches a piece ever again, 17 of their 41 touches were in the final term when they lifted early and we kicked 4-0 to get out past 40.

To be fair, we were chasing the game and had to let the reigns go a bit. Put the score on the board earlier and the structures don't have to change.

We are 5-2 vs the other sides in the 8, you are 1-4.

End discussion.

facts and you wtf? we beat freo in Adelaide numpty.

I think that defensive style won Geelong that flag and Brad is trying to emulate his brother a bit. Gutherie and Atkins were a huge part of that success for them, O'Connor and Parfitt defense first types as well. Let Stewart and Duncan go to work on the counter. We do have good quality in the backline so I think it could and is working.

Forward line is the major issue. No real physically impressive players that have genetic advantages over their opponents. Caddy potentially that player in two years, but need another one or two to join him.

You didn't touch the ball to let the reigns go while they were stretching the lead out past 40 and you weren't chasing anything but pride after that point.

Don't have to touch the ball, just set up more aggressively at the stoppages. Ridley peeled up to one of the first contests in the last and left Curnow by himself to get it out the back. Don't think that happens with scores closer.

Well 2MP is physically pretty impressive, the problem is he almost seems a reverse Casboult - beautiful kick, but doesn't clunk marks.

These aged well :laughv1:

Essendon by 52.

Powerhouse.

Carlton = zero chance.

Is he playing?

If so, Essendon by 72.

Setters will run rings around our slow plodder mids.

That is an unprecedented injury toll. I had most of those players in the All-Australian team before they got injured too.

I also agree that Carlton has had an easy draw. I think we got to play a team outside the top 8 back in early April. Once Carlton plays the good teams they should fall back to their real ladder position of 10-12th.

That's a lovely fantasy... but what happens to the ladder when we get rolled by 60+?

No Orazio No Carlton.

Essendon by 87pts.

Based on the contents of this thread you would think both sides were winless and this game was going to decide the wooden spoon.

I continue to be shocked that no Essendon fans are embracing their greatness. It’s like they are living in fear of something - perhaps ASADA busting down the doors again or some other unforeseen event where their players completely forget how to play football.

Facts are Essendon are 2nd on the ladder for a reason. The higher ladder position deserves to start favourites.

I personally can’t see how Carlton stop the edge and contract year Jake Stringer.

In think it will be a sad night for Carlton fans. But cool to see the McKay brothers play on each other for the first time ever.

The only Essendon players I’ve heard of are Merrett, Goldstein, McKay, 2 meter Peter, McDonalds-Tippannuti and Jake “contract year” Stringer. And Will Setterfield if he hasn’t been delisted yet.

I assume Ben and Harry play on each other so absolutely zero clue who goes to Curnow.

Nor do I care. 2nd on the ladder beats us every day. Bombers by 94pts.

Yep.

Essendon’s inevitable 94pt flogging for Carlton will solidify their position as the 2nd best side in the competition.

Bigfooty is on notice.

Essendon are 2nd on the ladder for a reason. They have 34 premiership points for a reason.

Even the all-time great premiership sides didn't go undefeated.

You can't be this one-eyed on the main board and expect to be taken seriously.
