The loss of Redman hurts.

We are really missing Duursma and Hobbs running power on the flanks at the moment as well.

Setterfield in will help as a defensive bigger body in the middle and will allow Stringer to stay forward.

What Setters has to some degree in size he lacks in pace - not sure he alone can handle Cripps, Kennedy & Hewitt? You’ll need another big body in there - TDK also another clearance big bod for us - the rucks will be interesting.

Cincotta will run with your AA Captain.

Add in Walsh, Hollands, Acres, Fogarty on the outside.

Le Package will need to pinch hit in the middle to help out.

I’d like to see him take up a new role off half back - as far away from goals as possible :).

We will run with, durham, perkins, merret and setters i would imagine with jake pinch hitting, would have been more confident 3 weeks ago, but each of their form has tapered off over the last few weeks as well as the teams

Ahhh you never know with these games. our history is littered with upsets.

1999 prelim comes to mind ;).

You clobbered us last year, our players have used the word redemption so we will see what that means on Sunday.

I’m sure both teams will be up for this - will come down to which team can settle in front of 90k and take their chances.

Caldwell will play more midfield than Stringer now that Setterfield is back.

Merrett, Durham, Caldwell, Setterfield as the four main midfielders.

I don't like seeing any players hurt, but I wasn't displeased to see that Redman would miss.
Not a star, but always seems to give us trouble.

Hope there are more Curnow bobbleheads to take from whinging Carlton fans.

Fogarty, Williams, McGovern and Saad have come back into the Carlton team over the couple of weeks and have made a big difference. Right now Cerra, Martin and Cottrell are the only starting players missing and due to come back after the bye. No point talking about Docherty and Silvagni as they are out for the year and have been - all year.

I don't know if Langford is going to play or not - but he has been fantastic for Essendon - and Parish/Draper are big outs IMO.

Essendon are definitely on the up and have been for a year now- despite last year's second half fade - which isnt unusual in developing teams.

Essendon's performance against Collingwood is a better indicator than their arguably unlucky loss to Suns.

I expect a close match with (maybe) Carlton's mids grinding a win out if they can manage to get a couple of periods of ascendancy. Carlton have typically 'won' their games due to 10 minute bursts of frenzied goal kicking- (IMO) largely based on Carlton's mids getting the upper hand for a period of time- usually halfway through the third quarter and onwards. Essendon have shown that the team can run out 4 quarters - so it could end up being another close finish game - as if Carlton supporters need any more of these.

Reckon the first 5-10 minutes of these large crowd games when everyone has fresh legs and pressure/intensity is real high can really set the tone for the game. You can be doing not a lot wrong early and a couple of more luck based outcomes go against you then all of a sudden you’re 3 goals down.

Think if Essendon are to be any chance we’ll need that period to go our way.

It's not about injured quality players, it's more the balance of the side. Carlton's injuries don't impact the balance of their 22. Ours makes a huge difference to how we play.

Duursma and Redman take away a lot of our run, foot skills and intercept marking. Reid's injury means Ridley cannot play as a loose man in defence. He'll probably have to play an accountable role on Curnow.

Parish and Hobbs' injuries (particularly Parish) has taken away from our midfield dominance, which means we're likely conceding the midfield battle. Our full strength midfield dominated Sydney and Collingwood's earlier this year yet North and Richmond in recent weeks smashed ours since Parish went out.

Draper would have been very handy in this game too.

Still, we're right in it as long as Langford plays because we have enough quality playing and our gamestyle of launching from HB in recent weeks is what troubles Carlton.

MCC confirmed they are doing full seat ticketing, same as grand final.

they must be expecting a monster crowd number.

What I can certainly see happening is this game being a low scoring affair.

It's a contest between who can deliver the most ineffective inside 50s.

The likes of Ridley, B.McKay, Weitering and Newman will all have a field day (or should I say a field night) as all their opponents will be kicking the ball straight down their throats.

Totally understand that view point. We had similar issues a few weeks back with Gov, Saad and Fog out.
Not stars, but Gov provides intercepting and attacking kicks out of D50. Saad at the very least halves most defensive contests and provides attacking run out of D50. Fog provides defensive pressure in F50 that gives our other forwards multiple chances at scoring and allows our defenders time to set up behind the ball. All very important things to our game.

depends on what we do with Ridley.

we like to play him generally spare or off his direct opponent so he can roam and intercept.

If Curnow starts giving Laverde a bath (highly possible) we may have to switch Ridley which changes our structure massively.

That being said our defense is the most improved thing in our game, i have a lot of faith in it but our mids and offence though is in dire straights at the moment. Redman is a big out for us.

it's actually a really interesting game,

Carlton have a very potent offence and a weaker defense, whereas Essendon have a good defense, but a weaker offence. going to be interesting how it unfolds.

EFC supporters are clutching at straws bring up Hobbs, a mid who averages less than 14 possessions a game or Zac Reid a defender who averages less than 10 possessions a game, has played 1 game in 2 years and never taken a contested mark in 9 games in 4 season as important outs.

They are the types of injuries team have to be able to cover.

We score less than 2 goals a game more and concede less than a goal a game more.
Negligible difference.
