Look at Carlton.
Is their win against Brisbane now diminished? What about their late capitulation to the then winless Crows? The fortuitous win against Freo (excluding the free kick controversy)? You can only imagine the response had it been us in their place.
Their win last week was outstanding and deserved the praise it got, but because they're seen as a team on the rise and we're meant to have been on the decline, the discussion is completely different.

Hasn't it generally been the trend that there's minimal change to the top 8 teams after about round 7 or 8, with maybe just 1 or 2 teams dropping out/jumping in?
Brisbane's top 4 chances are all but over after last night and it's getting harder to see how they even break into the top 8
And while Collingwood is currently 8th, they'll slip down to at least 9th by the end of the round and most likely down to 10th

Not that it’s guaranteed to happen but as people have said above.
It’s rare to have huge change ups in the ladder. The best teams usually break even at worst or dominate early to cement their spot for the back half of the year. I always had it as about Round 10 where you could lock in the genuine Finals teams but as also mentioned above, I think Round 8 is probably a good spot to dial it in from.
From the bottom 10 the only teams I see really challenging the live ladder 8 spots are Freo and Doggies. Suns have an easy schedule but their form shows they aren’t reliable enough to get the job done.
I think Lions are a bit mentally shot and the Gabba aura isn’t there this year. Teams know they can go up there and if they apply a hint of pressure they’ll capitulate.

Probably one or two big sliders in either direction, right? Some minor adjustments within the 8, otherwise. But you probably already want to be knocking on the top 4 door (top 6ish after the conclusion of this weekend?) to end up finishing there, realistically.

Never, ever trust a coach who coaches from the bench.
How can they possibly be contributing to the matchups, strategy, tactics of the game from there?
Coaches who coach from the bench are cheerleaders and not coaches.
And yes, I include McRae in that group.

What about coaches who coach from a Cherry Picker ????
Back in the halycon days of the VFA - late 60s early 70s , Harold Martin ( had a fair amount of dirt in the system ) was Captain and Coach of Preston , previous week he got suspended , so what they did at the qtr time and 3 qtr time breaks so he could address his team , they had a Cherry picker outside the playing arena - and he was in the bucket and with the extended arm of that machine , he was over the top of the playing group , but he wasnt on the ground , not making contact with the arena , because he wasnt allowed to because he was suspended , but he gave his address to his players at those breaks
Dont know if he coached Preston to a Premiership tho - ha

Interesting statistics and conversations
It's actually exceptionally rare for the two grand finalists to both have really strong seasons the next year (prelim or better), at least over the past couple of decades. Often both somewhat struggle, with the exceptions being when a dynasty side was around.
2022 was terrible and 2023 is looking that way.
2021 (straight sets and missing finals the next season) was also bad.
2020 (prelim thrashing and missing finals the next season) the same.
2019, well Richmond backed it up in a shorter Covid season but GWS didn't.
2018 was just okay with a prelim and semi finalist for 2019.
2017 you had Adelaide fall off a cliff and Richmond make a prelim.
2016 generated a semi finalist and a missing finals team in 2017.
2015 ended up with a straight sets and an elimination final loser for 2016.
2014 did have Hawthorn back up as 2015 premiers but Sydney straight setted.
2013 created the 2014 premier but the other grand finalist also straight setted.
2012 finally a good year! It involved the 2013 premiers and a prelim finalist.
2011 - EF loser and prelim loser.
2010 resulted in a 2011 grand finalist and an EF loser.
2009 finally another good year - resulting in 2010 grand finalist and prelim.
2008: the 2009 premier and a side missing finals.
2007: a 2008 grand finalist and a side missing finals.
2006: 2007 straight sets and a side missing finals.
2005: both played in the grand final the next season!
Pointless research, but somewhat surprising. Making a grand final is certainly not any guarantee a side will back it up with a prelim or better the next season.
