That Geelong group got dudded out of a flag though. Between having to play a WA state team in 2 GFs, and then the Paper Baggers in 95, I can't remember many teams that have had to play against teams who have so much of an advantage.
That's life.
It isn't meant to be fair.

Paul Couch used the term, 'good steaks' when describing West Coast's physical development. He felt like a Little League player against the Eagles. "Muscles on their muscles". I don't buy into the hysteria though. On paper, they were a more even team than Geelong

It's a dead shame, but life goes on...

Idk if we were "dudded" that much tbh- or at least if we were it doesnt bother me that much.

The finals system of 1997 seriously screwed us and was 100% unfair. Am bothered by that year alot more than I ever will be about 1994 or 95.

Week 1 - 2nd placed Geelong plays 7th placed North, at the MCG (North's home), at night
Week 2 - Despite finishing 2nd, plays 4th Adelaide at Football Park and stupid Grant Vernon - possibly the most mentally defective umpire ever, didn't pay Colbert's mark.

I reckon 1997 was BS and completely outlined why McIntyre's finals systems were terrible
The Top 5 was perfect. The fact that the 1991-1999 had flawed systems outlines further how the AFL makes things up as they go along

Still, if they had been good enough, they would have won.

I got excited for what I thought was going to be a bit of a shit show at HawfiesLand...

Saw this headline, and despite the obvious typo (lub instead of club) I decided to read on:

And then I get to this bit, realise theres no meat to this story, its just another deluded trash article by Kane "Still Not Over 2007" Cornes:

Welp, what a waste. Just another "opinion piece" by Cornes where they use language in the article like "HAS BEEN CRITICISED" to make it sound like its multiple people with this opinion, when its just Cornes with these comments.

Wow, what a headline, "Player who won flag returning to preseason later than players who didn't."

Extraordinary.

Hawthorn should have released a statement against Kane Cornes, stating that sensationalist pieces of journalist trash by uninformed personalities play no role in their carefully considered decisions, and that Ginnivan has never been criticised by anybody in the club

Kane Cornes opinions are irrelevant too often. One man bleating is not actually fact.

Geelong's finals series that year was fantastic. To even make the Grand Final was amazing given the club was outside the 8 with like 5-6 weeks remaining. To make a Semi would have been a good achievement

Geelong played well when they had to in the first three weeks of the finals at to this day, it's the best Geelong finals series I've ever seen.

The Ablett mark seconds before the siren was a cherry on top
It is the only time Geelong has won three finals in a series and not been rewarded with a Flag. Adelaide in 1998 had the reverse, their crap effort was week one, but despite their 5th place finish in the H & A, by dint of the 7th and 8th placed sides losing they progressed to week 2, then found form. Won their next three including the GF against an inaccurate norf.

Anyone wants a good laugh on a Saturday morning, go check out the Fixture Discussion thread on the Richmond board.

25 odd pages of insane raving about how the corrupt AFL is deliberately screwing them over because everyone is so terrified of the awesome premiership-challenging juggernaut that is Richmond 2024.....

Victim mentality is an acquired personality trait in which a person or group of people (collective victimhood) tends to recognize or consider themselves a victim of the negative actions of others, and to behave as if this were the case in the face of contrary evidence of such circumstances

I think they're getting ahead of themselves

TO be perfectly objective, I don't think either Richmond or Geelong will be a threat in 2024
Premierships are hard to win. Damn hard. Past success guarantees nothing in the future

Of all supporter bases, surely Richmond would have learned from their 1980 experience...

Completely agreed, neither are likely to be anywhere near a threat next year. The Richmond fans I know are unanimous in that.

That's the same state team that Hawthorn had no problem thrashing in a Grand final, and that Essendon managed to knock out pretty comfortably in 1993.

For me too many Geelong players from that era trot out the "state team" excuse instead of admitting they didn't perform when it mattered. No wonder they never won a flag.

I have no doubt we beat WCE in 92 or 94 if we got the Grand Final at our home ground too...

Describes an awful lot of footy fans right there.
