Positives of the game against the Bulldogs

Brennan's problematic. His marking is sensational but those two missed goals were shocking kicks. And sadly he's been kicking like that too consistently to think it can easily be fixed.

Thought Braba had a pretty decent first game. I've not been backward in expressing my reservations on his potential to be a long-term senior player. I'll be delighted if he proves me wrong. His overhead marking was impressive and he kicked soundly too.

I think I was one of the first to start raving about Vez after seeing him in the reserves vs Rams team on the Bus Stop Oval during pre-season. The only thing that surprised me about his game today was that he missed those shots. That won't last. He'll be nailing them before long. Loved his tackling. Hope Nick Davis was watching! We didn't really get to see his overhead marking skills on show today. Watch out for those in coming weeks - surely there will be coming weeks for the Vez?

I'd add Hall as another mini-positive. His first half wasn't good but he seemed to gradually regain some confidence and form as the game wore on. We have to remember he's missed a lot of football and there's a huge amount of pressure on him to perform at the moment.

great post LIZ!!! as usual!:thumbsu:

Dunno whether it was when I sneaked over to RWO for a peek but saw you thought he was too outside!

Brabazon was bloody sensational.... pro-active and demanding the ball and making options!

Vez.... I saw a few leaps that convinces me he WILL BE A SWAN SUPERSTAR!!!!

I was interested that Paul Roos coached from "upstairs" today, did the commentators make much of that?
As I said in another thread, the mood at the ground was positive despite the loss. We really seemed to dominate most of the play and definitely didn't look over-whelmed by the bulldogs. The new guys seemed to account for themselves very well.

hahaha:D

They get all their best advice from BF!!!

Recent thread advising Paul to go back to box!

Seriously though..... the security would be unacceptable at Manuka!

But I think he should go back there!!!

By far the most encouraging to me was Crouch running through the gut's with pace and being direct with long kicking, which in turn help's our forward's,where has he been for so long.
Yes,Crouchs comeback, showed he has still a lot to offer, straight down the guts
football no messin. Great effort! I think he has been hampered by injuries for
a long time. But going on todays effort, has possibly gotten his spot back.

Impressed with your guys today...not so much with ours. We were simply more efficient but still have a lot of players down on form.

Like the look of some of your new players...Veszpremi and Brabazon in particular. Also like the look of McBurney, Nicholls and Chamberlain:D

Today saw the weakest side on paper Sydney has put on the field for many years. But for the second quarter they showed that the next tier of players will also never give in. McVeigh has come of age as a senior footballer, Veszpremi and Brabazon had outstanding debuts and Crouch, in the second half played as if he was 3 years younger. As well LRT did OK and Hally looked better. If only Brennan could kick.

Obviously i wasnt at the game but i got the impression that with Crouch in the team it gave Kieren Jack more freedom as both Jack and Crouch could rotate the tagging duties. Jack looked more damaging today than he has previously.

Thought Brabazon was sensational too for a first gamer. Should get more game time if he continues to play games like this.

Was disappointed with White, I expected more especially with all the hype that is generated within the forum.

For me:
- Ted Richards as a forward. It worked really well, he took strong marks and isn't the worst kick going around, shame he couldn't kick that one from about 5m out. Wouldn't mind seeing him as our other option rather than Playfair.
- Jared McVeigh. Played superbly, whenever he was near the goals you just got that sense he would make the most of the opportunity. Bear in mind it was Brownlow medal contender Adam Cooney he was playing on, fair effort that.
- Crouch was okay. I thought he would be slow and useless like Mathews was earlier on, but I underestimated the old guy's pace. I forgot how quick he was, and when he got the ball he managed to burst away from packs a couple of times and I was suitably impressed. I take back anything I said about bringing him back being a mistake.
- Lewis Roberts-Thomson. I don't care what some of you like to say about him, he's a good player. We are a much better team when he is in it, and Paul Roos obviously appreciates that as well. He has that ungainly look about him, but so does Dustin Fletcher, and it hasn't held him back much. I thought he was pretty good.
- The two debutants with Zs in their name were pretty impressive too. Didn't need to be wrapped in cotton wool, both seemed to be ready for AFL footy, which is the beauty of Roos' tendency not to play kids too early.

yeah, i wanted to see more from white but i'm not sure how much game time he had
and he seemed very confused with his role at times, very tentative, and i expect he'll lose that with experience
i'd rather he stay, play up forward, drop grundy and send ted back

I agree on this one. I remember back in 2006 when he was out and injured for the rest of the season, I never realised how much we needed Crouch. Seeing him play today was a breath of fresh air. Obviously everyone thought we would never see the old-Crouch again, but we saw glimpses of it. He's a very smart player.

I forgot Crouch

I honestly thought he was .......gawwwwn!

But very very important to have the ability to run fast, up the corridor and kick LONG!

absolutely sensational first game back!:thumbsu:

Me too. I just flipped back to the thread where we discussed Crouch's future. How wrong we were.

He's a very smart player. It's valuable and priceless.

Yep , he was good, some good straight running.

Good to see him fit again

Straws + "clutching" = this thread.

Sorry if I sound grouchy, but it's a long drive back to Sydney after a performance like that insipid rubbish we offered in the 2nd qtr.

Looking forward to seeing what these kids can do for us in 2010 though.

Carry on.

i feel like i'm in the car with you
actually, it might've been better if i had been, we could've vented much spleen in the car instead of on here
there were some good things in the game, but to me it was more a massive opportunity wasted after the start we made
that's what's sticking in my throat
four goals up after 5 minutes, and beaten by halftime

tuco and rancid i really am perplexed at why your expectations are so high to be as pissed off and disappointed as both seem to be.

Get some perspective, we have alot of injuries and only lost to the doggies by 16 points, we were NOT that bad today considering and there are some positives to be taken from this game; mcveigh..... again.

Even though we have a lot of injuries and didn't play that badly and also the fact that there were encouaging signs with some of the debutants performing really well, I can understand Tuco's and Rancid's disappointment and frustration, especially after such a bright start followed by a shocking 2nd quater effort. I also had the same feelings as them.:(

I get that we made some shitty mistakes today BUT the doggies are a better team than us so we did well to get as close as we did. I understand swans fans being negative after the pies / crows game but we did ok today considering the players we're missing.

we really needed to win, we won three quarters
we got a four-goal headstart
the dogs came into the game right down on form, and we jumped them
we had numerous opportunities to convert pressure to points, and we didn't ... that has NOTHING TO DO with the injured players we were missing, the same players would've been expected to kick the goals at whatever level they were playing at
ted richards playing on and hitting the post from 15m had NOTHING TO DO with any injured swans player not on the field

there remains no explanation for what happened in the second quarter
either our coach stopped watching the game or our players got caught (as someone else said) like deers in the headlights
THAT is the perspective

i'm absolutely sick of seeing this sort of vanishing act by the swans
we followed the same script v the dogs in round 6, and also against the roos in the draw
we go missing against c'wood and adelaide by tradition

it's not new, and don't gimme that rubbish about players being injured, the crows had some good players missing last week and towelled us up

my "expectation" is to see my team play football for four quarters and be as competitive as possible
if we get beaten by a good team playing well, so be it
that's not what happened today, we threw away a golden opportunity to get our season back somewhere near the rails
now we have to overcome fremantle, in their best form of the season, and what really bothers me is that a lot of the arrogance and stupidity that seems to have infected a lot of our players will actually end up hurting us in a game we'll be expected to win next week

I wouldn't say the dogs are a better team than us. I would say they are a more consistent team. They beat us with probably four of our best players out, but on our day we can beat any team on the park. At times we are our own worst enemy, and today proved that once again.

yeah i'm not denying our accuracy is shit, it's been shit all year, against lesser teams this isn't a problem, the doggies are NOT a lesser team. yeah we got a four goal head start but the doggies are good and were able to capitalise on their oppurtunities - which they've done all season.

it's not new, and don't gimme that rubbish about players being injured, the crows had some good players missing last week and towelled us up

as i said, i can understand being pissed off about the crows and collingwood game but we put in an effort today and were outplayed by a better side - suck it up and stop being such a bad sport. AND of bloody course the fact we were missing some crucial player is going to effect us, how can you deny this?:confused:

yep and we were beaten by a good team and didn't play THAT badly, you don't have to go back further than last week to see how bad we can be. We were competitive today, even though we lost, stop being such a bad sport.

i agree and am saying that we did well considering some of our best players were out.

However the doggies are a more skillful side than us, our skills are not very good.

did you actually just call me a bad sport????
you've got to be kidding, explain how i'm being a bad sport?????

yawn

I'm not going to get into a big debate about this but you're invalidating how good the doggies are and undermining the swans effort. As i said, i can understand you being pissed after the crows and pies games but today we did alright and were beaten by a more skilfull side. To me you're coming across as a bad sport.
