Autopsy The King influences Umpires a win over North by 3 points... #jessiewhitesque

Shit way to win, but at the end of the day it was a deserved free kick and we needed some luck to finally go our way somewhere.

Some of our mids had okay games but absolutely smashed in the clearances again today. I have no idea what the answer to that is, but clearly neither do our coaching staff.

Anyway, we got the W and it seemed to mean a lot to the players. Lets hope it's enough of a spark to get some semblence of momentum into our season.

Heeney and Hayward are a problem that needs resolution. Heeney is a match winner and last 2 weeks he has done some freakish things, just very little consistency.

I think we need to play only one of them forward though.

When one is out the other seems to thrive. Maybe it’s time Hayward is given another role? Maybe some time in defence or wing may help.

We will be down a tall forward so it may not be this week, but we need some out of box thinking with the forward mix.

Heeney as the focal point would be a good start.

You can get a lot of inside 50’s through repeat entries. It can be misleading. A shallow inside 50 isn’t much.

Inside 50 marks and efficiency inside 50 with shots on goal helps break out the inside 50 stat. Swans had less inside 50’s than North but more inside 50 marks and for every second inside 50 it resulted in a shot at goal. North weren’t as efficient.

May explain why we won. Swans midfield when it wins the ball in general play was able to assist creating more scoring shots and the scoreboard reflects this. If it wasn’t for poor conversion in the first quarter the game could have been over. 2.5 to 0.
Were they shots at goal

Our clearances were better (or wasn't quite as s**t) when McLean was in there, in general people/coaches don't value rucks enough, and while there's no doubt our centre clearance setups need to be better... having rucks who are warmed up garbage is not helping, put a Max Gawn in there and our clearance work wouldn't be as atrocious.

The best our stoppage work of recent time has been in 2021 when Hickey had a cracking year, and last year when Sam Reid was in there doing the rucking.
McAndrew was in his first game and still has a bit of work to do with his ruckcraft, promisingly he got hands to ball which is a starting point that most our rucks don't.
Hickey is slowing down and Ladhams is not good in the ruck, I'd need to replay but at first glance a lot of the walkouts from stoppages North got he was the ruck. He falls when competing in the ruck over alot and is out of the contest. Maybe he'll get there, but personally I don't see it...Sinclair mk II, minus the unconditional effort.
McLean is probably out best ruck right now, McAndrew needs some time. Imo, trading for a ruck at the end of year is not quite but almost as important as a getting KD.
Ladhams is up and down, but he has had a few good games in the ruck. He's not as bad as reading this board would have us believe. Yesterday, it was when he went down that we lost all control in the centre because McAndrew just couldn't compete (at all). I also think the McLean switch happened a bit late. McAndrew was nowhere near it even before Ladhams got injured, so persisting with him well into the last was an odd move to say the least.

What a warrior

I have been harsh on Parker this year for not being as hard and impactful as he needs to be for the team.

He did excellent yesterday. Really strong performance. Led from the front. Scott Selwood like, only with a bit less talent but a lot less ducking. I’ll take that any day.

His team mates will review the game and see the standard that has been set. Given by the way they dug in through the fourth quarter, I’d say Parker helped lift a few players on the day as well.

My take on the game:

1. That’s a heart breaking loss for the Roos. I feel for whoever was on interchange duties. I think it is fair say it wasn’t the highest quality match, but they pushed hard all game and played with a lot of spirit. You only need to see the Port game to see how even the comp can be when a team is having a good day. I think we need to respect what the opposition brought, even if we may not like them.

2. I think Sydney was better for longer throughout the game. Poor kicking again was an issue. Losing Ladhams also hurt. I was feeling despondent that it looked like the team had dropped their heads again in the fourth. A good structural change by the coaches (The Cleaner in to ruck) and a lift by the team resulted in a strong come back. That will drive some belief.

3. I get that it wasn’t a high quality game but I saw a lot to be optimistic about. The team continues to have a different mix of good players each game, which means that once they gain consistency we will have a strong side. I have come to accept that the GF was not an aberration but a sign of where we were at last year. We had a good run last year but we were still young and inconsistent. Combine that with a tonne of injuries and you get our 2023.

4. Where do I see the green shoots? The Cleaner (McLean) continues to improve. He has a good body for a full forward and will be a solid performer and very important structurally. Ladhams also continues to improve. Francis, as he has known all along, has the makings of a very reliable defender. Gulden has escaped his poor form (others will also do so with time). Heeney is looking like he is starting to turn things around. Not sure if it was he or Horse who put him into the centre bounce near the end, but we hopefully will start to do it more often to get him involved. I feel like Rowbottom is also coming on (I said near the start of the year that he is a slow season starter like the 2012 crop; well I think he is particularly slow but I won’t be surprised if he comes home very strongly indeed).

5. Where am I concerned? Midfield coaching / structure is a worry. I don’t care who you have in there, you gotta be competitive. That should be the biggest focus to turn around. The forward line is also not firing. Do we need to give people simpler roles and just let them play? I don’t know… Gould, as much as I want him to make it, just didn’t feel like he has it. I hope I am wrong. On the bright side, he will hopefully get a good run at it to prove me wrong.

6. The silver lining for 2023? Franklin will get to go out on his own terms. At the start of this year, there was a real risk we would have to make a hard call. Some on here will know that I was not terribly keen on recruiting Franklin to begin with (due to concerns around cap and team balance) and was on the fence for his contract extension. With our injuries, and his fierce competitiveness, he will get to go out as the champ that he is. He will bring smiles to a lot of fans, and I love that he is still thinking finals footy - he has not given up yet, good on him.

Re the midfield, this is purely my guess but I've said it all year...

I reckon after the GF, Horse & co saw that we needed to win more fast centre breaks, and tried to gear the midfield towards certain types - the Warners, Guldens, Papleys.

You can see this in the way everyone was being used even before Swans players all around the ground started dropping like flies. Gulden and Warner run around doing as they please. Mills averaged only 41% CBAs from rounds 1-4. Rowbottom's role has clearly been to block and defend to make the space for the others. These two were incredibly instrumental in our midfield getting back on track and us making the GF last year. This year it seems we weren't as interested in that dynamic.

We've then banked on this new, more fleet-footed and pacey dynamic with the midfield centered around guys like Warner and Gulden. And it just hasn't paid off. Gulden, understandably, gets monstered too easily in the contest (luckily makes up for it with his incredible work rate and ball use on the outside), while guys like Warner and Papley are less effective when they have to get their own ball than when they have it being fed out to them. So it's basically left to Parker to win it at the coalface and get the engine room going.

Mills is now injured and Rowbottom likely hasn't improved his attacking game much as he spent all summer preparing for a season of defending.

Basically think Horse & co miscalculated the direction our midfield needed to go in and we're now paying the price for it eight months later.

To add to this, earlier in the year Parker was blocking for the likes of Warner and Gulden. In the last few weeks that’s been switched around and Parker has again become more prominent as the inside player to try and address it.

I forgot one green shoot. MacAndrew was great I thought. Still needs a lot of development but exciting to see what we are on track to have a good, tall ruck that we have developed from the start. Fingers crossed he continues to come on.
