Welcome Welcome to Adelaide: Sid Draper - Pick 4, 2024

Thinking back to last years draft many mused how despite loving Curtins potential we should have taken the Eagles generous offer of F1 for our pick used for Curtin. And the reason we all wanted Eagles 2024 first was Sid Draper. He was considered a top 2 prospect at the time and we were all salivating over the prospect of getting him. Ultimately grabbing Curtin the common theme was “shame, that means no Draper then”

Now clearly it’s not all good news as we had a crap season but amazingly we still ended up with the lad anyway.

Being injured for a big chunk of the year and not able to do the combine testing, I just wonder if we have grabbed the number one or 2 player here at 4. Smith had an injury free year I believe and is a possession machine but lacks Drapers elite pace and power. FOS had an underwhelming year despite niggles and low output when playing.

If it wasn’t Lalor I am personally very happy it was Draper instead of Smith or FOS. Time will tell. All I know is the lads going to get 110% out of himself.

And we ended up with Curtin AND Draper

The effective choice was Curtin v Smith.

Though if West Coast hadn't traded their pick #3, it would have been Curtin v Draper & suspect we would have Smith.

Is that true? I would have done the deal thinking West Coast would finish bottom and we’d get pick 1.

Now had we done the deal, it would be Smith instead of Draper. Personally I would prefer Smith as he’d be a high output mid and we really don’t know what Curtin will be yet.

Or would it be Langford v Curtin? I'm not sure how into Smith we were
I believe we would have taken Smith if Blues took Draper.

Langford was the next choice.

Only time will tell

My question mark would be does he have enough class to be a no 1 or 2 pick

I didn’t think so this time last year , but it’s a fair point re the injuries , he did incredibly well this year considering

It's more likely that some people wanted draper back then but most just wanted a higher pick to be able to select from the top few. Turns out we were shit anyway so were still able to pick from the top few

Jury is out on Curtin though. Which is understandable given he’s played stuff all games and looked to be injured. Also, his lack of athleticism and the sheer fact no one knows where to play him suggests we just can’t tell if the lad will end up in Smith’s territory (who you can guarantee will be a 200 game gun mid). Time will tell.

What Tha ! ......lack of athleticism ???? ....you must be kidding

You've made way too many assumptions, without any evidence

I'm hesitant to go against the narrative, but IMO Curtin is not good in tight and doesn't particularly like contact.
Perhaps protecting the knee may have had something to do with it, but it was noticeable to me this year.

I saw him get turned inside out due to lack of athleticism. Hence why he isn’t a defender. He lumbers around. As you do at that height though. If he can get his tank up, perhaps he can play wing or roaming half forward

Excellent trait for a key defender 😆

I like him as a wing next year, will be able to use his skills in space as well as be an aerial presence

Definitely showed some midfield craft from what I saw of him in the SANFL, so hopefully those skills can develop further down the track

Also saw him run into an open goal, he isn't quick but isn't slow, moves a lot like Dawson with the vision of him in his draft year when he played in the midfield in the WAFL.

Lack of athleticism? In that last game against Sydney he took a ball just inside 50 and sprinted away from a chasing player to kick an easy open goal, 197cm guys usually can’t do that.

Yeah I'm not sure how this fallacy as come about.

He's not Izak Rankine sure, but he's more than athletic enough.
