Autopsy 58 point win against Essendon.

Reckon there was a focus on kicking a lot longer and hand balling a lot less - except when kicking inside 50, where we hit up the short pass more effectively. A definite shift in game plan, didn't do much of the short chipping at all. Utilised the wings a lot more with Gulden as an avenue of attack. Feel like we're developing a few more strings to our bow as a team which is exciting.

Told you COR wouldn't be needed.

Two metre peter better check his luggage for Tom McCartin.

The long bomb goal of Parker's came from 2 consecutive Warner tackles that just shook the ball loose. Terrorised his oppos. Rowbottom grabbed it and dished to Parker. A thing of great beauty.

yes, indeed! warner barrelled two bombers one after the other, it was relentless ... that's two tackles to one swan within about three seconds ... only 28 tackles less than essendon managed all night

it also reminded me of a swans player years ago, i have a feeling it was paul bevan and i think it was in the middle of the scg but the memory is not that clear, but the swans player tackled an opponent who handed off to a teammate nearby and the swans player tackled him too, in the same action ... a double tackle
i friggin love warner ... and again last night he showed that remarkable composure in possession, to dance in and around players when you think he's going to get caught ... then find a teammate with a sweet, sweet kick

Parker's sledge was a bit weird tbh, maybe there is some history between the two from when Shiel was at GWS?
I do recall an article doing the rounds saying how lippy the young gws side were to the swans, saying things along the lines of “wait in 2-3 years, we’ll start smashing you” or to McGlynn “where’s your premiership medal”

Dons are garbage lol

We’re still miles away from Melbourne, freo snd obviously lions

Mills is our Bret player

Paply is a selfish prick

Pady keppps proving me wrong

paddy can play

it’s just the head risk is his issue

should have been 80-100

but i was worried we would find a way to lose to them

take the win, intensity up early was pleasing

buddy plays in 2023

at least 100! but at least we all enjoyed a relatively stress-free night ... as did the essendon players, it would seem (their coach has to go, they're abysmal and that shouldn't be the case with some of the young talent they have ... and is heppell their captain? good grief, he can go too ... coach and captain symbolise the mediocrity that permeates that club ... but anyway, who cares)

and yes, more intensity early ... the game was over before halftime, a rare thing for us, so i'm prepared to forgive the second half sleepwalk
nods to some of our more maligned players ... rowbottom seemed to be always in the fray, at important moments; florent looks very assured in defence (much like lloyd once did in his early days there, but florent has more class); wicks, great return, played like he was making a statement that he wants his place back in the seniors; bell, he's no star but he's persistent, applies pressure, tackles well and just generally is improving; hayward, can still be frustrating but still such a dangerous (and mobile!) marking forward option
and to anyone slagging off papley ... he's still getting back to match fitness ... we're better with him in the team, you can see he lifts all the forwards, including franklin
oh, and franklin was great last night, could've had six or more but played for the team ...
as much as i like mclean, i reckon that was our most effective forward set-up all season ... mcdonald is going to be a great player, he has a great workrate and teammates love what he does (as kennedy showed after his late goal)
he should be pencilled in next to franklin every week
heeney, papley, hayward, and the resting ruck ... and i think our hickey/ladhams combination also is a must, and will continue to get better

This is s perfect of Lloyd in our back 50.

6 on 3 out on the flank and wing and he can't see it or looking to get a ED.

Then does this back breaker for Chad.

Lloyd has been overlooked for this type of thing for a long time.

He was better up the ground.

Needs to be told to assess and deliver quickly.

Don's were rancid but we didn't give them the chance to get any confidence up by giving them a quarter to settle in like we have most of the season.
Parker , Kennedy , Papley much improved from last week. Bell and Wicks did well. Without McLean there was a lot more space between the forwards and it was so much better.
Ruck Jesus is a huge in and I think Ladhams is better than most 2nd rucks going around which will be a factor if we can keep both in the team. Mills is elite should a chance in the Brownlow if he keeps this up.
Goal kicking was ordinary and we could have got a cricket score but we created the chances.
Rowbottom will maybe get a week , Campbell to come back in next week.
I've always had a concern with McLean not getting enough separation from the other forwards. He's a good mark and kick for goal but sometimes he plays like his feet are bolted down.

Agree on Paps. I said last week I thought he was too concerned with his own game. I'm not sure our best if that far behind Freo's best. Let's hope this win means the lights are back on and we're finding our mojo again. Self-belief is important for a young group

This infuriated me last night. If you can't make a decision in a game we are are up by 6 goals and under no pressure at all...What hope does he have.

When the first 1/4 finished Rutten walked out towards the huddle. Head down, distant.

Thats when I knew Essendon are toast.

The kick to Chad is safe. Chances are the others will hit the deck. The only other kick is just in front to Mills but that's still a hard kick to make

Kicking to Blakey is not a good kick. Every chance it results in a turnover and goal to Essendon.

Parker and Gulden are well covered by Essendon. They wouldn't make that mark and turning over in the middle is not where you want to be.

Kick to Hayward is impossible. Lloyd doesn't have that great a kick.

Kick to Mills is the only good option, would have been a better option than Warner but Warner was the second best and safest option

So we're supposed to be depressed for this week as well?
It's not going to be a very good year if we are only allowed to celebrate wins against Freo, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Of course much bigger test next week, but I prefer going in with a win under the belt rather than a loss.

this

we as fans need to stop this can only win against some clubs and you choose between miserable we lost or just dismiss the win as it’s only “insert crap team.”

not saying we were world beaters last night but we can only beat who we play and ffs we smashed them and the shit stain they are.

also even the worst side in the comp can win on its day , it’s the premier comp of the code, it’s a tough league to win in.

yes players shouldn’t get carried away . but **** me can’t us fans enjoy it, i’ve been texting every essendon prick i know

Observations:

1. We are a five goal better side with Ruck Jesus. Can’t quite pinpoint why - but we now have plenty of evidence to show he makes a huge difference. Nearly our most important player.

2. An in-form Wicks helps. He hassles and harangues more than any other Swan.

3. McLean will need to do something special to get back. The mobile forward line just clicked last night (albeit Essendon’s lack of pressure in the mids helped - the true test is yet to come).

Great post

On their coach, it looked like he was their friend on the bench. If your team is tracking towards 30 tackles while losing the possession count, I think you need to be a little bit scared of coming to the bench if your coach is there. If the effort is there, of course the coach should be supportive regardless of the score. But that effort from Essendon was abysmal. I haven’t been watching the Dons closely - maybe the coach has given some sprays in his time - but the coaching approach just seemed weird…
